2022 Oil Painting Studio Tour (what you do and don't need!)

  • So often I see painters hesitant to start their creative practice because their studio isn't "perfect" or pretty enough or they think they don't have everything they need to start. I used to paint exclusively out of my dining room and am just now working out of a dedicated studio space.
This oil painting studio tour is messy, it's not perfect, and this is *normal*. Don't let your expectations of what you should have in your painting studio hold you back from starting.

Loved the tour! The only thing that I would add to your studio space is a VOC air cleaning unit. My studio space looks to be about the same size as yours and I have a different set of architectural issues to deal with - for example, my windows don't open. Even though we really don't smell "fume odors" from Odorless Mineral Spirits, they are still present nonetheless.
I came across a discussion about this several years ago on the Wet Canvas community boards and the 3 stage VOC removing air purifier by Air Doctor was being reviewed by the poster. This has regular, Hepa and Carbon filters, monitoring and alarm features. I went to their website, found this model and got on their mailing list. Around 2 months later, the company was having a big sale event and I ordered it (I began saving up for this unit during this time).
I also use the Edge Pro easel, mine is in Cherry, and I want to thank you for doing your review video. Even though at the time that I bought mine, the light was their 1st generation and even though I haven't had any issues with it, I took your advice and purchased the new one. I love the digital light settings and works great.
I cannot comment about the "natural state" of your studio - it looks like mine!
Lastly, thank you for your videos! They have helped, encouraged and inspired me in how I approach my art.

Thank you for sharing the “real deal”. For me this video accomplished what you said you wanted it to do - it gave me “permission” to move forward in my practice despite poor lighting and cramped quarters. I need to stop get distracted by needing to get a better set up. Your videos and insight are very helpful to me. Thank you.

I watched your video from my studio and looked over my shoulder at an almost identical arrangement of supplies, paintings, reference materials and general artsy clutter. I guess its a state of mind for us painters. The tube opener is actually a nut cracker but perfect for the off tube that refuses to give up. I always think of John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles' trying to work the washing machine. 😋

Great space! ❤ Thanks for sharing it. May I ask how you hang your panels on the wall? I've recently made a switch to oils and am using panels and canvas pads. Finding a place for them to dry is such a dilemma!

I’m amazed that you can have a puzzle out with a cat! My cats love puzzle pieces. Your studio isn’t that messy. I’ve seen worse. It works for you and that’s what matters.

LOL, your space is HUGE! My whole house is 200 square foot, but you're right, you don't need much space, you just need a little dedicated space and it'll work! Love your backdrop for filming ... it feels spacious the way your organized it and the big Western window makes your space larger too! Nice organization with the low shelving too!

Chelsea, straight away I have ordered a wooden dish rack drainer for my oil boards....up until watching this video I had been leaning them up against a wall, then I saw the dish drainer in your video and thought, aha! That is perfect for my needs so thanks for showing us your work space.

    Love it!!
    Thanks for sharing!
I work in my dining room and don’t like that but have not much room. And now I can see how I also can do it. Can you tell how you stick your panels at the wall?? Thank you very much!

You’re an inspiration. Thank you for your vulnerability and authenticity. You help me so much! On an unrelated note, can you please make a video on how to figure out how to sign your paintings? How important is it to have a legible signature? This part always stumps me.

    • @russgaulin3721
      @russgaulin3721 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Second that request. Getting started in acrylics and follow the advice to use large brushes, but can't really sign with 'em. Is some kind of pen frowned upon? A watercolor rigger maybe? Thanks to Chelsea for your wonderful instructive channel.

Many great painters had a messy studio/ workspace. A little clutter in an art room is good for creativity I think

You have what appears to be a dish rack, but it's empty. I assume it's there to hold small panels. Does it work for that purpose? I'm looking for a good storage solution nfor 6x8 and 9x12 panels. Ideas?

    • @Srossartist

I use those stackable mesh paper holders from office supply stores. Works for panels 8x 11 or smaller

@@Srossartist Great idea, though they're a bit small for my 9x12s.

The thing you use to "get open tubes of paint" is a lobster claw cracker. Or a crab legs cracker.
