    When I started painting 10 years ago, my drawing skills were really lacking but it didn’t stop me. I’ve painted a lot of bad paintings in those years but it was so necessary to get where I am now.

      @@rinkerd3575 when drawing make shapes, draw lines etc use whole arm movements. When adding tiny details use the wrist movement. This will bring boldness in your work and a sense of liveliness will be created
      Drawing demands you practise it every single day.
      Painting you may skip but for drawing draw atleast 1 drawing. It can be anything still life, figures etc.
      I have uploaded some videos on drawing with some tips.

    Wow. Everything you touched upon is exactly what have struggled with for YEARS!! I am a self taught portrait artist (my mother and grandmother were also talented self taught portrait artists) but I am terrified of starting in oils! It's my dream to paint like Sargent. I'm learning so much from your videos. I learned about the limited color palette from another realist painter on TH-cam (draw mix paint) and it totally made sense AND took my fear level down a few pegs. Also, what you mentioned about not waiting for everything to be perfect. I tell myself all the time - just dive in! - but I never do for fear of messing up. The fear of wasting material is real.😆 Thanks for your videos. I am gleaning all the info I can!

    I've been drawing with ballpoint pen and colored pencils my entire life, but I want to learn to paint before I die. This video was very helpful and encouraging. Art for me is all about transferring a portion of your soul into the medium or genre you're working with, and it just seems logical to me that oil painting was invented for this purpose.

    Tremendous.. I can't pick just one because as an experienced amateur they all 10 ring true. I'm trying to just get the portrait of resemblance that I can of key people in my life, like grandson and wife, but soon will be changing style completely to be more in the direction you describe. I'm nowhere near as loose as I want to be. When I go there, I will start to paint scenes with loved ones using more of these methods. Thanks very very much. Every video you do is a gem. You don't overburden with technique. I love the fewer colors idea, and simple matching of value with loaded brush. Thanks again!!!!

    The biggest problem I think I have when it comes to matching colors 'accurately' is that my setup isn't great. I often paint with artificial lighting but the lighting on my canvas doesn't match the one on my palette and so it becomes an impossible task. Still trying to find ways to fix that. I often find myself painting after dark because I still work full time.. so natural light isn't really enough for me. I'm also out of patience and tired often and that's not the best precondition for patiently mixing colors.

      Try buying 5400-5600K LEDs for the room you're working in. A lot of normal LEDs have a much warmer color temperature at around 2700-3200K,which is very different from daylight

    • @hgzmatt
      @hgzmatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@km099 That's a good point. I actually had one but it only covered the canvas so I was stilling having inconsistencies with the palette and reference. I got some milky ceiling panels now which do a great job and they have the whole colour range.

    I make mistake number 9 based on time. If I don't think I have enough time to finish the section I'm working on, I don't start. I hate laying out a bunch of paint, only to have it dry because I can't get back to the painting until a week later. I need to get over it and just paint.
