  • Heaven’s Gate (1980)
    Modern Trailer Edit by Dan McBride
    Part of my trailer project - breathing some new life into older, forgotten or overlooked films.
    Mainly to spread awareness of these great films and hopefully inspire more people to
    seek them out.
    Director - Michael Cimino
    Synopsis - During the Johnson County War in 1890 Wyoming, a sheriff born into wealth does his best to protect immigrant farmers from rich cattle interests.
    Yep, I did it! The infamous Heaven’s Gate is one of the most divisive films in the history of cinema. Despite all the vitriol that’s been thrown its way, I’m going to admit that I think it’s much better than you’ve probably been lead to believe.
    Love it or hate it, I think you’d have to agree that the cinematography is in a class all it’s own. So consider this trailer a celebration of the mesmerizing work of Vilmos Zsigmond, one of the true artists. -- DM

      @@grantterlecky1248 It's subjective. I saw Unforgiven and it's really good but when I mean "great western" I mean these types of films. Unforgiven is incredible but it's like a metamodernistic approach to the genre.

    Amazing trailer as always, thank you so much in particular for choosing ‘Heaven’s Gate’.
    An incredibly tortured film over history, an incredible shame that it was mutilated by the industry, it’s an incredible piece of film making and artistry on the grandest scale.
    So very happy to see it having such a strong revival and positive reassessment.

    From the reputation of this film, I was hesitant to watch it. This trailer is great, but what really sold it for me was 'A misunderstood magnum opus' because that kind of movie will always get my ass in the seat.
    This is to say that every little detail you think to add into your trailer edits makes the trailer better for what a trailer is supposed to do. You might not be a director, but you're one Hell of an editor! Cheers 🍻🍻

It touches on so much of the film without ruining anything and tells the plot smartly and is edited together in such a way that is intense and awe inspiring. For sure, this is very much a favorite genre of mine and you can def find some films that fit this bill if you dig around my channel (my trailer for Black Moon comes to mind). Also check out my trailers for Pastoral: To Die In The Country, Messiah Of Evil (though that's more horror), Stalker (more philosophical), Phase IV, and The Man Who Fell To Earth.
      Some recent films I've been watching that you would probably enjoy include a German film called Laurin (very dreamlike atmosphere), Morgiana (gothic fairy tale with drug induced vibes) and a very strange French film called Litan (this feels straight up like watching a dream unfold). That's just off the top of my head - I hope to do trailers for all of these at some point. Also, if you're not familiar with Jodorowsky, well, The Holy Mountain is the king of surreal/weird vibes. Cheers!

    If this film had been a box office success , Hollywood would have been completely different by now. More independence to the creators and less interference of the producers and studios.

    • @HnRZ
      @HnRZ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A beautifully crafted film visually but the script is just complete nonsense and characters are woefully undeveloped and miscast. Remembered today only by Cimino's reckless overspending (nearly bankrupted UA) and autocratic behaviour while making the picture. Pretty much everyone had a bad time working on the film except the cinematographer.

    • @DMEdit
      @DMEdit  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Unfortunately this film was doomed before it was ever released. Bad press killed it before it ever had a chance, the studio released a bastardized cut, it was unceremoniously dumped into (very limited) theaters and it had one of the worst trailers I've ever seen.
      That being said - I don't know if Hollywood would have been any different. Cimino wasn't the only maverick out there abusing his position. And with genre fare like Star Wars and Jaws raking in the dough, it was pretty clear that the tides were beginning to change. Though I also like to imagine a "what if" scenario!

    • @DMEdit
      @DMEdit  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd have to disagree that this is the only reason it's remembered. It's definitely gained a bit of a cult status since the director's cut has been made available, and it has a lot of champions nowadays. It's flawed sure, but I actually love the casting. And the ending really hits me in a way that most films never do. To each their own of course!

      @@DMEdit I recommend watching "Final Cut: The making and Un-making of Heavens Gate" documentary. Sure there were similar "mad genious" directors like Friedkin and Peckinpah around but none abused their power like Cimino did. This and subsequent films by Cimino only makes me wonder how come Deer Hunter is such masterpiece. But nevertheless, excellent job with the trailer as always!
