I just bought a Ford 801 tractor with this engine. The simplicity is nice, but I don't understand why the engineers decided to put the injectors and return lines inside the valve cover. If there are any fuel leaks, it'll also contaminate the engine oil and ruin the bearings if it isn't caught early. I have a couple other diesel engines with injectors and return lines on the exterior of the head, so I'm curious what, if any, advantages there are to having them inside.

Yeah that's one area they failed on designing this engine. I dont think there's any advantage to the injectors under the valve cover. I'd guess they might've done it this way since the engine was originally designed as a gas engine and that was the most effective way of getting the injectors into the combustion chambers.

Drilling sure helps bleeding air out

Do you have any tips/tricks for finding return line leaks that are letting diesel into oil pan? Specifically curious how to confirm there isn't a leak where the return line goes into/through the block. Pump was just rebuild so I'm somewhat confident it isn't the pump.

Never ran into an issue with one leaking but you might be able to do an air test using soap and water to see if you see any bubbles kind of like checking for a leaking nail in tire. Other option might be a vacuum test.

Do you have a source for the rubber seals ? I can't find the part number. thanks

Which seal are you asking about? The injectors seals? If so that part number is 312070.

The four side seals that seal the injector lines to the block of the head.
      Thank you
