Serval Cat Video From Dullstroom, South Africa - Hunting & Marking Territory
The Serval (Leptailurus serval, previously just Felis serval) is a fascinating wild cat found in various regions of Africa, including parts of South Africa such as the Dullstroom area.
Servals are easily recognisable by their distinctive coat pattern, which features bold black spots on a tawny-yellow background. They have long legs, a small head in proportion to their body, and large ears with distinctive markings on the back.
Servals are typically found in grasslands, savannahs, and wetlands. In the Dullstroom region of South Africa, they can inhabit areas with suitable cover and prey availability.
Servals are skilled hunters known for their exceptional ability to catch small prey such as rodents, birds, and insects. They have a unique hunting technique where they use their large ears to detect the faint sounds of prey moving in the grass before pouncing with incredible agility.
Their diet mainly consists of rodents like mice and rats, but they are also known to prey on birds, frogs, insects, and even small antelopes. They are primarily nocturnal hunters, although they may also be active during the day.
Servals are impressive jumpers and can leap up to 3 meters (almost 10 feet) vertically to catch birds in flight or to ambush prey hiding in the grass. Their long legs and agile bodies make them adept at navigating through dense vegetation.
This beautiful Serval was seen near a Trout Dam in Dullstroom, at around 3pm on a hot Summer Day - quite uncharacteristic of them, as they are normally strictly crepuscular and nocturnal. (Active at dawn and dusk, and during the night). We saw this Serval at Millstream Farm, on a bird watching trip. Millstream Farm is about 5 kilometres fro. The main town in the area; Dullstroom. In the background of this video you can hear 3 bird calls that we were actually hearing during this 20 minute sighting - the Klaas's Cuckoo, African Stonechat and Dark-capped Bulbul.
