African Buffalo Video (Syncerus caffer) With Buffalo Sounds & Noises Around Olifants
The African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer), also fondly known as the Cape Buffalo, is a fairly common member of the Big Five, and can be found throughout the Kruger National Park. They are particularly common in large herds of over 100 individuals in more open areas of the southern Kruger National Park, the plains of the central Kruger National Park and the Mopane Shrubveld of the northern Kruger National Park. I cannot tell you where to find these large herds of African Buffalo, because I have seen them all the way from Crocodile Bridge to Pafuri. When you come across large herds of Buffalo, the noise and sights are tremendous, and you can spend a decent amount of time just watching them move around - it is a splendid sight to witness.
African Buffalo exhibit both browsing and grazing behaviours as part of their feeding habits. This dual feeding strategy allows them to utilize a wider range of plant resources, maximising their nutritional intake in various environments.
Grazing: African buffalo primarily graze on grasses. Grazing involves consuming grasses close to the ground level. Grasses are often abundant in savannahs and grasslands, which are typical habitats for African buffalo. Grazing allows them to efficiently harvest the energy-rich grass blades.
Browsing: In addition to grass, African buffalo also browse on leaves, twigs, and shrubs. Browsing involves eating the leaves and softer parts of woody plants. This behaviour helps them access nutrients and moisture found in a variety of vegetation types, including bushes and trees. Browsing can be especially important during dry seasons when grass availability might be limited.
By combining grazing and browsing, African buffalo can adapt to changes in vegetation composition and availability throughout the year and across different habitats. This flexibility in feeding behaviour contributes to their ability to thrive in diverse ecosystems across Africa.
This video was taken around the Olifants area mainly, but also around Letaba Rest Camp, and in the background of this video you can hear the common noises and sounds that the African Buffalo make, especially when in larger numbers. The Cape Buffalo do hold a soft spot in my heart, and I can watch them for hours.
