  • I review the Krups GVX burr grinder. It can be found for about $50 online, or $40 if you live near a Costco. It's a very solid value at that price.

    Thanks for the kind comment -- you are correct about the price, I got it wrong in the video :) I checked my receipt a few days after I shot the video and it was $29.99.

    Thanks for the compliments. I have never used the rice method to clean a coffee grinder however I have read about it and I would assume you are safe to use rice in the Krups. In regards to the Moccamaster I would suggest sticking with 10 cups to start. Let me know how it goes :-)

      I use the rice method for cleaning my Krups. It works.

    For Turkish coffee, normally it's used super fine ground coffee, not super course...

      That was probably a slip.

    "like a british nanny" - i don't even know what this means but it made me chuckle. as the other posts say, i found this really useful and wanted to thank you for putting a well balanced and detailed review up here. it seems that these grinders are a little more expensive in the uk, but still worth a purchase. good work!

    British Nanny..... Lol... Mine has worked really well for the past 10 years. Today when I was grinding my usual load of coffee that I store for later use, it just stopped near the end of grinding about 2.5lbs of coffee. I hope it's not dead. But if so it's paid for itself. I just decided to watch a couple of videos to maybe get some trouble shooting tips. Nice video, thanks for taking the time to make it. I just checked my GVX1 after letting it cool off for at least 30 minutes, and I think the motor is shot.

    The best advice was make sure the coffee hopper is fully home,or the machine will not grind.thank you.

    Thank you for this video! I was trying to see if my new GVX212 had a trick to make it grinds and it was the lid. 😁

    I think he means you have to shake it about. There was a case of a British nanny in the states who shook her baby and it died. I assume every since that British nannies have been labelled with the shaking baby syndrome. A bit like Americans and school shootings.

    The motor on our machine stopped, however the blue switch light illuminated when pressed. We suspected a jammed switch finding that switch and cleaning out the debris was key in solving the problem. As you suggested, we carefully inspected and cleaned the tight area where the coffee bean hopper lid fits into the body of the machine. We removed the fine coffee bean debris and ran a toothpick around the bottom of the rim. We noted as you run the toothpick around the inside bottom of the rim (from about an 8 o'clock to 4 o'clock position) at about 4 o'clock you'll note a stop that's a very tiny circular switch, it's visible with good light and good close-up vision. If the switch gets jammed with fine coffee debris, the electric motor will not work, this is what's called a "fail safe" mechanism. You need free up that switch to the point that when you press down on it, you hear a quiet but discernable "click". Also important to remove, inspect and clean the upper burr (it's the tri-sided piece inside the hopper) you remove it by setting the grind on fine, twisting counterclockwise and pulling up, install in the reverse after cleaning. Finally, with the machine unplugged, take a small flat bladed screwdriver and make sure you can turn the screw that's visible inside the recess on the bottom of the machine. Should a stone (yes there are small pieces of stone in whole beans sometimes) or very a hard bean somehow becomes lodged in the burrs the motor won't work. Thanks so much! Your video led us on an enjoyable process of discovery; in the end we fixed the problem with our machine. I'm gonna go make a cup!

    I enjoyed your video and found it quite informative. I found a like new one in a Goodwill store for $6.99 so I can't complain. Do you think it would be O.K. to use the 2 table spoons of minute rice method of cleaning the grinder, I heard this was a good way of clearing old build up. I was given a CDT Moccamaster that has a 15 cup capacity 1.8L It is made in the Netherlands. Should I use the 10 cup setting you advised or the 12? You are a good speaker, very concise and clear. Thanks.

    I have one of these grinders myself. I was wondering whether one should load the machine with just the amount of beans you are directly going to use and switch it off when that "horrible-no load- help, I'm going ballastic" howling sound starts or if it's better to prevent an empty load and always fill the loader to the max ?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tempting to load the bean hopper to the max but your beans will go stale much faster doing so. They are very susceptible to light, air, moisture & heat. I only add the amount of beans I intend to use at that moment. After your beans are ground, turn off the grinder to stop it.

    I just bought this at a thrift store and am confused about the front dial. So does it stop at the number of cups selected and leaves the remaining beans in the hopper?

    Hi Thanks for the review. Im wanting to get one that can grind fine for expresso. Will this do it?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +John Laing Get a "conical" burr grinder for espresso. I have the Bodum Bistro conical burr grinder which works great for me. For espresso, you may have to go a bit higher in quality and price to get a decent grind.

    This is not a conical burr grinder. It has a flat burr, which is ok, but worlds apart from a conical.

      Hey there -- is the blue light coming on? You might also want to make sure the grinder guard (that's not the right term) inside of the chamber isn't screwed tight.
