We found this one of the trickier videos we’ve produced so far for Caius Schools - ‘rejection’ is a difficult thing to talk about, but we felt we should approach it as some of our community may sadly have to experience it in the next couple of days. We’ve devoted most of the video to a fantastic student testimony from Daisy, who successfully re-applied to Caius in 2020. We’ve also tried to inject a little humour to keep things light for those facing a nervous wait! Don’t miss the outtakes at the end - and let us know what you think of Dr Scott’s lip synching - could a Caius Tiktok be on the cards?!
Hello again, Could you please tell me if my daughter needs to hold a Conditional Firm offer from another university which her final A Level grades exceed, to be considered in the August Reconsideration Pool? I’m enquiring because most of the universities she has applied to ask for the same grades as Cambridge, but she has a couple of offers which are lower. I’m getting slightly confused about the process to be honest and am unsure if she needs to hold one of the lower offers as CF with UCAS to be allowed to potentially apply for a Cambridge Reconsideration place? Thanks again, Marina
@@Marinagreenthakrar Hi Marina, any applicant who is notified that they are eligible within their decision letter and goes on to achieve at least the typical Cambridge offer for the course to which they applied can choose to enquire about the potential for a place at Cambridge through the August Reconsideration Pool once the scheme opens in August 2022. The insurance offer doesn't enter into that - so I'd advise her to choose her insurance offer based on which university she most wants to attend :)
@@CaiusSchools Still slightly confused. Do you mean that she could hold any offer as her ‘Firm’ choice with UCAS, even if it’s the same as the standard A*AA entry to Cambridge and still be eligible for the August Reconsideration Pool, if she achieves those grades?
@@Marinagreenthakrar That is our understanding. The details on www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/august-reconsideration-pool make no mention of exceeding an offer from another university. Needing to exceed an existing offer was a condition of eligibility set by UCAS for its Adjustment process, in which Cambridge took part until it was discontinued. The August Reconsideration Pool is new for this year and is now a Cambridge-specific process, and so that particular criterion set by UCAS no longer appears to apply. This explains the confusion with regard to the successful applicant who has commented below, who applied via UCAS Adjustment, rather than the new August Reconsideration Pool. Sorry - it's all a bit complicated. For the final word you might want to check with the central Cambridge Admissions Office, who oversee the August Reconsideration process (as opposed to individual colleges) - they can be reached on admissions@cam.ac.uk.
@@CaiusSchools Thanks so much. It all appears clearer now. I had been looking at the website link you posted above too. I will contact Cambridge Admissions directly, I didn’t because I wasn’t sure I am allowed to as a parent. Thank you so much again for your guidance.
My daughter has been entered into the summer pool. Is it true that there has been no offers made for PBS via the summer pool for at least the last 5 years and it is therefore unlikely that there will be any places available this August?
Hi Marina, do you mean the August Reconsideration Pool? We don't have the figures to hand here but courses are opened if there are places available - this depends on how many offer-holders decline or unfortunately miss their offers, and it can't be predicted in advance. A list of opened courses will be posted here in August: www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/august-reconsideration-pool/arp-2022
@@CaiusSchools Yes. Are the Summer Pool and the Reconsideration Pool different things? I looked up statistics around the Summer Pool. If they are different, could you please tell me how many places have been awarded for PBS from the Reconsideration Pool in the last 5 years or at least 2020 and 2021? Thanks.
@@Marinagreenthakrar Yes, the August Reconsideration Pool is the replacement for Adjustment, which ran for the past few years. We'll be doing a video on the two pools later in the year. I'm afraid individual colleges don't hold this data (the pools are organised by the University), but it's worth saying again that past data won't be much use in predicting the future: it all depends on the subject-specific picture in terms of numbers in any given year, which is down to the preferences and performances of individual offer-holders. Hope that's helpful and sorry it's not possible to say any more at this point!
@@CaiusSchools Thank you. I will tell my daughter. I’ve found an article on Adjustment in 2019 and it gives me some comfort that someone got into PBS then at least!
Hi , I was entered for summer pool just yesterday , I wasn’t given an offer from my initial application . I believe if I get the required grades or higher and if there are places left I could still get in ? Also does anyone know exactly how the summer pool will be set up because in my reply email they said that we can choose to be reconsidered, given that we are eligible , (in the summer pool after A level results day) ? Any feedback would be great . Thanks
Heyyy, I got in through the summer pool (formally known as adjustment) last year. So I think I can help. As you pbrly know your eligibility is based of a few factors (socio-economic background, postcode, school etc). Furthermore, you can only apply if you exceed your firm offer and, at least, meet the Cambridge offer for your course. For example, I applied for philosophy, which requires A*AA, and my firm at the time was Durham, which was offering me BBB. In the end, I got A*A*A*. Therefore, I was able to apply for the summer pool. Furthermore, on the day before results day, the 2022 summer pool website will give you a list of subjects that are, potentially, looking for summer pool students. The list will be based of if your course and colleges have space for you and, also, if certain directors of studies, at particular colleges, want to take on another candidate. If your subject is there then you can fill out a form, on the website, to apply. After this, if you get an offer, you will be called up in 2 days or so by the your college offering you a place. If your not offered a place then you will just be emailed. Hope this helps!
@@tln_577 thank you , and well done on achieving 3 A* you must be very proud . Thank you for the response it’s very clear on what the summer pool will be like . Take care .
@@tln_577 Hello, so my daughter would only be eligible for Adjustment/August Pool if she both meets the minimum requirements for the course and keeps a firm offer which she exceeds? I’m asking because several of them are asking for the same as Cambridge, but a couple are lower. Thanks in advance.
