The lyrics were stripped off and the track was given to Rob Thomas, who re-wrote the lyrics and melody and re-titled it "Smooth", then recorded the song as a demo to play for Santana. After hearing the song, Santana decided to have Thomas record the final version..
There’s a lot of dance clubs in Miami, FL. Usually they are pretty culturally homogeneous, but there’s one, the name escapes me and I haven’t been to it yet, where everyone goes. Whenever a particular song plays, there will be a culture who goes out and does a dance; Garth Brooks will come on and folks will line dance, or Los Lobos will come on and the hombres will go rock out. Everyone, I mean EVERYONE hits the dance floor once Smooth by Santana feat. Rob Thomas comes on. True story.
