Hello Jack Jennings here from the video. As I said in the first minute of the video I do know who John Mayer is😂. I have even taught some of his songs to students but I have not fully explored or examined his playing. So we thought it would be good for Sam to guide me to one of his favourite performances by John. If you didn't pick up on that and you're simply here to comment and complain about the title of the video...... well, that's TH-cam for you. Thank you all for watching and boosting the video anyway with your hilarious comments 😊.
his live at the nokia where the light is album is his masterpiece. sure slow dancing and gravity, but also belief, bold as love, the acoustic songs in the first part, its soo good
He is hands down the greatest guitar player alive. I don't care what anyone says. From his tone, his use of timing, technique, and note utilization.. His blues stuff is amazing, Dead and Company really elevated his guitar playing ability as well.
Hands down the greatest guitar player alive? That's a bold statement. He's an incredible player, but he's not Derek Trucks. In reality, it's very subjective. In terms of technical skill, he's nowhere close to guys like Mancuso, Govan, Vai, or Gilbert. Not really into that kind of playing, but even if you exclude the technical players, there's quite a few guys who could battle for that title. It's all what you like. Based on tone, timing, technique, and note utilization...I like Trucks more in every category.
Being a vocalist helps his phrasing and musical choices when soloing. Puts musicality ahead of technique. He could sing most of his guitar licks and phrases and they would sound great.
My school highlight was performing a cover of this song at the Bath jazz is festival. Attempting to convey a glimmer of the performance that JM (& crew) managed to pull off was a feat in itself. Was also the reason I bought a cheap 335 copy. Great video! Great JM performance choice 👍
Thank you for watching man! I bet it was the highlight of everyone else’s school days too if you managed to capture even a glimmer of the original performance(which I’m certain you did) ;) ❤
Lovely! I also show this to a lot of people to demonstrate his guitar mastery. The use of phrasing and timing, the drop offs and bend hikes, the rake, the screaming his double bend, the tap harmonics, the quick shredding into the “I know” breakdown, transitioning that back into the main riff. As you said, “understated” greatness. This is a guitar solo master class. My favourite solo of his is from “wheel”, an under the radar track. His live version is awesome, check it out.
This is my second fav performance of John's, the other being Covered In Rain from a super old live album. He's so good at leaving meaningful spaces between the phrases of his solos, and at getting a killer tone and feel from the guitar thats right on the edge of precision and dirty. This performance in perticular he gets so many amazing tones from that 335, which he almost never plays live. It's almost always a strat of some kind
Loved this reaction! John Mayer is such an inspiration... I just read that comment and i agree too, do Out of my mind WTLI and Wait until tomorrow next please!!
In this performance john mayer played more into the albert king realm and it was just few prhases he played like bb king but it was more into albert king.. you ought to check john's live performance of ain't no sunshine from Red Rocks, Colorado, 9/1/2010 and then check your teacher's reaction, believe me it was john mayer's best take on ain't no sunshine, He delivered an unprecedented solo....
John Mayers best guitar playing are the times he is playing live with Dead and Co. Especially this past ‘23 Summer Tour. Dude is in an absolute league of his own.
IMO John Mayer is the best possible ambassador you could have to carry blues music through the 21st century. That dude is extremely well respected by B.B., Buddy, and Slowhand.
You can pull up many videos of John doing this song, and the solos are always different. But one thing holds true... 9 months later, there is a guitar born that looks like John Mayer
Yeah he had a conversation with Steve Jordan. And he told him something like “why play 20 notes, when you only need the 3 right notes”. And to me that’s when he really started playing less when it was called for.
I look at Mayer's youtube channel a lot just to see what there is, and he is "ALWAYS" playing he will chat with people online and then suddenly stop and just get lost in some lick he is messing around with and then go back to chatting.......... That probably has something to do with why he is so good....
John Mayer loves Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Doyle Bramhall II, Jimi Hendrix and tons of other players, what you're hearing when he pulls those double note bends, is Albert King. Hell, most of John's blues playing is Albert King.
Your guitar teacher …. Doesn’t know Mayer …. It’s been 25 years since John made waves. He has the number one selling guitar on earth. The number one selling used guitar, the greatest guitar album of the last 40 years , I would not take lessons from someone who not only doesn’t know Mayer. But doesn’t worship Mayer.
musically john is the greatest guitar player alive. i know there are greats out there but john's song writing skills and ability to convey so much emotion is crazy, but no matter what i say john is clearly hated
Another Guitar player that is very underrated is Keith Urban he's not just a singer his playing is non to Shabby ,th-cam.com/video/NfvqVxoJIaE/w-d-xo.html
JM is a complete artist, others are your everyday guitar player, except vai who is also an artist himself..... the difference you ask , every tom dick and Harry can play a riff, shred , this that and the other...... but very few can compose something that breaks the boundary of genre, age group and gender, and mature like fine wine...... if you don't agree , you are a below average non musician, who can't tell a note from a beat
I get that he popularised the guitar in times when the guitar seemed to be forgotten, and therefore we feel to read into his playing things that are simply not there, but there is nothing there. He is a very average guitar player, which just happens to be popular. What he is doing is realistically simple, and stuff that wouldn’t even be level 1 for an average jazz player. I get that people like him and his playing, but this is just pop, and therefore inherently average. Just my two cents.
If you have to introduce your guitar teacher to John Mayer then you need a new teacher. To be that ignorant of one of the greatest guitarists ever is crazy.
A advise, stop saying "ahm", just make a pause. Edit: in the first 40 seconds, before your teacher answered, you said it 9 times. It's disorienting and shows your anxiety / uncertainty about the topic you about to speak. Especially in pre recorded videos.
Lol. And this is the vid you wanna introduce John Mayer? I hope this is a joke coz you'll have to throw him back to when he played Neon a decade ago in a small bar with an acoustic guitar. Not to mention the live arrangement of Covered In Rain. Dude find a new teacher.
I dont believe a guitar teacher doesnt know john Mayer lol hes one of most acclaimed guitarist of our time and been on the scene for almost 20 years. Extremely unlikely.
Lol yeah, very true. He’s obviously aware of John Mayer but hasn’t explored much of his music as he said in the introduction! (He actually specialises in Indian classical guitar!) but I thought “Showing my guitar teacher who doesn’t really know John Mayer very well but knows him a little a John Mayer song” wouldn’t be quite as effective as a title haha! Anyway, thanks for watching mate!
I introduced my gardener to plants
there are hundreds of guitars players and dozens of guitar genres. Dont be an idiot
Might as well introduce a fish to water at that point. I thought the title of the video was being sarcastic.
David Ryan Harris said: "I'm a singer who plays guitar, John (Mayer) is a GUITAR PLAYER who sings." Nailed it in my opinion.
If you needed to introduce Mayer to your guitar teacher, you need a new teacher.
my thought exactly.
i know right 😂

Did you guys know there is a YT video of John Mayer and BB King improvising?
John Mayer is at that level of skill where you’re just a conduit between your physical skill and the abstract form of music itself.
Absolutely! Thank you so much for watching!
"like if BB King went to berklee" might be the most apt description of john mayer's playing i have ever heard
😆😆 Thanks for watching man!
his live at the nokia where the light is album is his masterpiece. sure slow dancing and gravity, but also belief, bold as love, the acoustic songs in the first part, its soo good
Yes yes and yes! Thanks for watching!
One of my favourite albums of all time!!

@@andyj845 A slide guitarist? Not even remotely close to JM.
Julian Lage is the best alive hands down. As much as I enjoy John Mayer, he’s not even close
Arguing about subjective things 🤣
Idk man. Have you heard Machine Gun Kelly play?
I would really love to see both of you react to his "Covered in Rain" live in Birmingham. My favorite solo of all time, absolutely epic and powerful.
❤
The pauses between the solo phrases are the most important thing in this rendition.
Channeling some Freddie King vibes.
Being a vocalist helps his phrasing and musical choices when soloing. Puts musicality ahead of technique. He could sing most of his guitar licks and phrases and they would sound great.
He is phrasing in his singing the same way as he is playing guitar.
Loved this reaction! Would love to see your teacher react to "I'm Gonna Find Another You" from WTLI - his phrasing in the intro solo is ridiculous
I absolutely agree! I’ll stick it in the list of contenders! Thanks so much for watching! 😁
how could a guitar teacher not know John Mayer
Exactly
He knows exactly who john mayer is. This is simply to get more clicks
If you watched the first minute, you'd see that he knows him.
John plays guitar in pure flow state.
I really enjoyed his talk analyzing johns playing. Can’t wait for more.
Yeah absolutely! Jacks an incredibly knowledgeable chap, and his guitar playing is out of this world! Thanks for watching!
Yeah..John was inspired by B.B King..he said that in interviews
I didn't see that coming! Check the work of jack on classical Indian music on guitar, just amazing !!
Having Pino on stage with him is JMs biggest flex
Nice work, good to see the legendary guitarist that is Mr Jennings getting involved 😎
Awesome reaction! I'd love to see more of these!
There is a fluency and complete literacy in playing like this.
Absolutely, thanks for watching !
All around, dynamics, picking , tone, feeling. I’d have to say this is one of thee best guitar solos I’ve ever heard

This is my all time favorite video of him. The way John can take on other songs and artists is amazing.
Couldn’t agree more! Thanks for watching !

Thanks for sharing this reaction. JM is just amazing!

He can play the guitar like he was ringing a bell. I think he's had that thing in his hands every day for 30 years

Show him the live version of Neon. Most guitar players I know really respect that performance.

Ahh yes, both excellent suggestions! Thanks so much for watching, really appreciate it! 😁
Loved the video and Jack's reaction! Excited to see more of this series☺️
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed! :)
Brother! Eager so see more of you! How did John Mayer get this good? I want to stay on stage and bring da fun too to myself and the crowd!
Lots and lots and lots and lots of practice along with a god given gift I guess😆
Thanks for watching man!
A perfect example of playing the guitar with your whole body.
Pino in the background on bass... Nice👍

Doesn't suck that you have Pino holding down the groove.
I think your trying to say, Not play less, let it breath
City love, crossroads live 2004 is another one worth reacting too
If you introduced your guitar teacher to John Mayer, you need to change your guitar teacher. That's it.

Jeff Beck and John Mayer! Amazing!

john is musician's musician
David Bromberg does that thumb over the top thing
This is like showing your math professor Albert Einstein for the first time lol
i felt he plays more like albert king here with the muscle in it but goes down to bb sometimes to the subtle stuff
He makes it like a small Club.

He shouldn’t be a guitar teacher if he hasn’t gotten into Mayer
Next, show John Mayer, actually playing with B.B. King!
John Mayer loves Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Doyle Bramhall II, Jimi Hendrix and tons of other players, what you're hearing when he pulls those double note bends, is Albert King. Hell, most of John's blues playing is Albert King.
You should let him see John Mayer in colloberation with Keith Urban.

How the fuck does a guitar player need to be introduced to John Mayer?
change your teacher if he doesn't know john mayer..😂
Guitar teacher: doesn’t know John Mayer…
Did you not watch the video? he clearly says he knows who he is, and even thought some of his songs. He just never really checked out his music much
really enjoyed the vid
Glad to hear that, Thank you for watching! 😃
I hope you try on sob rock tour on new version of belief
Does he know SRV or Hendrix?
I don’t know him but I’ve had to teach my students neon???
Red flag, if you’re guitar teacher doesn’t know who John Mayer is.
I hear Jimmy Henfrix blues album influence
more Albert king / srv than BB id say in this clip!
Should have shown him Neon.!!!
If your guitar teacher has never heard of the name John Mayer, you maybe should get a new teacher.
i'm sure your guitar teacher never heard of that nobody "mayer" guy...lol
Watch pink pop gravity. Guitar God status
What year was this Crossroads?
Good idea for a video but should’ve showed him neon instead of a cover
