Exactly this. There’s a contemplativeness, being fully present and creation of meaning in this video that there are hints of in other videos (especially some of the ones where a project doesn’t go to plan). But this was so distilled and focused. I really like this glimpse into how Laura parses the world, and what’s important to her. A lot of depth here.
I also think that sometimes, a person really needs a big, fully immersive shift in order to feel alive and recapture meaning and purpose. This seems to be absolutely that, and I’m finding myself trying to find ways I can carry that energy into my own new start that’s happening within the next few months.

Not really. You cannot see or get to know LA in a car. I'm originally from the east coast of American where walking is normal. I hate that I have to drive so much here but on my bicycle I see details of the city.

@@P3x310- My pet peeve is that the majority of multi tools have these mandatory bottle/can openers. The world has moved on but the SAK is stuck in tradition. Parcel hook? Leather awl? Wire stripper? Bottle opener? Speaking for myself, I could open a bottle with any tool found on the SAK. How about a good plastic package opener? Maybe a probe to reset electronic devices. A larger foldable lanyard that does not require a key ring to attach to another key ring. A pocket clip? 🤔

This was so very German, in the best possible way. To be entirely honest, when I saw her open a glass bottle in the heat I 100% expected beer.

When I came to LA for the first time, I was absolutely shocked by the same thing : how unwalkable it is, how dirty it is, but also how weird. So I did the same thing you did : started a map of my own. Pinned a map to a wall and a bit of tracing paper on it. And every time I walked anywhere, I traced the streets. So little by little I had a map of only where I'd been and it helped me figure the city out

The author Ray Bradbury lived in Los Angeles, and he used to enjoy walking in the evening. Even in the 1950s, a pedestrian was so unusual that he was often stopped by police officers who asked him what he was doing. It happened so often that he wrote a short story about it, "The Pedestrian." Fortunately, its predictions haven't come true . . . yet.

I’m half Danish, half English and grew up between those countries. I’ve lived in the States for the past decade and have to say this video captured my experience of being European in America better than anything I’ve seen. All the little things you zoomed in on are the kind of things my eyes notice. Sometimes those parts of American urban life feel alienating, but they also come to feel familiar. Thank you for this beautifully told video. I’d love things more in this vein, alongside the maker and house-building videos - you have a story to tell about moving to the US.

This is the most stereotypical walking to somewhere in LA experience you possibly could have had! I love that you framed it! I tried to take a bus in LA only one time, and the experience was so bad I never tried to walk anywhere again. LA is a collection of islands of little walkable cool spots in a sea of unwalkable car hell. Thank you for putting such a positive spin on your day. You make youtube a better place.

If a physical map is what you want, I recommend a copy of the Thomas Guide for LA. Not free, and pretty big to lug around if you are walking (it’s more like an almanac than a foldable map), but a Thomas Guide in your car was required for LA newcomers before everyone had a mini-computer in their pocket. Good luck, stay safe, and happy rambling. Also, apologies for the imperial measurement system.

I think the intent of this video is to show a side of the USA that Europeans don't know about. In every major city of Europe, if there's a visitors center there's a free map of the city. It's a normal thing for someone coming from Europe to go to a visitor or tourist center in the USA and have this WTF moment of what? No map?

I totally get the (perhaps very European/German) urge to explore a city by walking. I went on a work trip to Tokyo last week and, on our day off, my colleague and I decided to NOT take the subway to some of the major sights, but to explore the city by walking instead. It was a very nice way to get a feel for the place, to catch its vibe. And we did discover some cool and interesting places that we would have missed otherwise.

As a long time Southern Californian native, welcome! Walking the streets of LA for 5 hours in her first week is such a Laura thing to do! Shouldn’t have expected anything less. This was a great way to see LA , not just pass by it at 65MPH. Since it is so spread out, covers every imaginable geography and is such a melting pot, LA is super diverse. There is no single LA “vibe”; there are dozens and dozens. You stumbled upon some… good and not so good. I am really glad you decided to spend time here and grateful you are bringing us along for the ride. Welcome to SoCal! You’re gonna have a blast. (Also crossing fingers we see more collabs with Simone, Adam and others! 🤞)

Like every city, there's good and bad. Kudos to you for diving right in!

haikuhsu ... I recall a story from a man I delivered newspapers to when I was 12. As an aside, he was born in 1885, and I knew him when he was 95 - I'm 55 now. Jack told me this : - An old man sat on a rock alongside a path, rubbing his toes and resting his feet. By-and-by, a young man walked by and asked, "Old man, what is the town ahead like?" The old man replied, "What was the town you came from like?" The young man replied, "They said there was no work for me there. They said I wasn't welcome. There were no friendly faces. I slept hungry and cold in a ditch last night". The old man replied, I'm afraid that the town ahead is much the same". By-and-by, another young man walked by, and asked, "Old man, what is the town ahead like?" The old man again, wisely replied, "What was the town you came from like?" The young man replied, " The people were lovely. They offered me all the work I would ever need, and begged me to stay. They fed me very well, and were so kind. Last night I slept warm and clean in silk sheets. This morning I said I wished to see more of the world, and they gave me food and water, and a hug for my travels". "Well then", said the old man, "the town ahead is much the same ... " ... Greetings from Devon in England ... 🤗 ...

"Like every city there is good and bad" yeah no...this isn't a city, and the amount of good and bad differs greatly between different cities. She's European, the US is not new to her, She's being nice. If you went to Europe you'd see what she was used to, and you'd see that's what a city is. LA is not a city, it's not dense enough for it, it's not walkable in any capacity, it has practically zero public transportation in relation to its size and population, etc. This entire video was about how awful LA is no matter as nice as it's presented, because that's the truth that you need to accept. It's disgusting, it's dangerous, and there's nothing to see, because it all looks exactly like the same car centric infustructure.

Back before people had navigation systems in their cars, EVERYONE had a Thomas Guide in their car. That said, the city has so many special pockets interesting things. Walking is a good way to really discover treasure. Beleive it or not, LA does have public transportation. Try learning that as well. There is some really fun art at each station.

Having a physical map you can use to relate different areas on at a glance is crucial for a place as georgraphically large as LA. So do go back to get a street map but call ahead...

I think people get stuck in the news or movies telling them this crazy idea that cities or areas are dangerous. The rates are generally lower for cities than rural. News likes drama.
Walking through or living in "bad areas" has really shown to me that it's not really that bad. I'm in the next largest city in the US, the one certain news channel would tell you are a war zone. Never had anyone ever try to grab my gear.
Making maps is fun. Grab a detailed map from a GIS or government site. I have one of my city down to the buildings. I've printed some pretty large posters over the years. She should do that, and kinda keep it to draw on to record her travels. Mark the locations of free pink tape.

I literally laughed out loud at the end! LA is my hometown (though I have been in Sweden and UK the last 12 years). But I grew up in LA. And I can tell you that I don't know a single person that has walked that distance through those neighborhoods. From just this one experience I think you've learned more about life in LA than people who have lived there for years. I really enjoyed this and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures there!

Aww I’m glad you framed you 9:13 map. Your your own person Laura with adventure in you soul. You’ve allowed us the privilege to join you on your most intimate views on life through your projects and playful brilliant ideas. Your love life. And now you found love. I’m so happy for you. I’m from LA and SoCal 38 years. It’s a rough city. My 4 year old use to say that she loves Disneyland and knots Berry Farm but does not like “lost Angeles”. The ultimate jewel 💎 in life is to love and have someone to share it with. Best wishes to you and your girlfriend ❤❤I moved to Seattle and love it.

@mariannerdy1137, please don’t neglect the city’s remarkable art museums, including the two Getty campuses: the mind blowing art museum and its amazing garden and also “The Villa” with its ocean view at Malibu, filled with ancient art and with half a dozen peaceful gardens. If you wish, you can reach both by city bus, and the Getty charges no admission. Then allow two days for the art museum and immense gardens at the Huntington Foundation in Malibu. It takes a full day just to absorb the three Asian gardens there. The LA climate is paradise and every stick stuck in the ground flourishes. Please attend a performance at the philharmonic’s Walt Disney Concert Hall (named for him and not a Disney Corp property). Enjoy.

Awesome story. Your videos always brighten my day. I am with you on physical maps. They give the sense of scale, the relationships, that no on line system can. In my collection, I have LA, SoCa, San Diego, San Fran, the peninsula, the full bay area, and (don't ask) san Bernadino, from 1989 when I was exploring employment (bay area) and grad school options. All out of date, by now, but still a pleasure to look at. I will say that my favourite is a 1.8X2.4m of th eHendersonville NC region. A lot of great detail of the Blue Ridge Pky (biked it in 2008, stayed w friends near Hville on the way)

As someone born in Los Angeles, having lived here most of my life, it’s interesting to see what other people think. On your other video where you said you were moving to LA, I made a post warning you and offering some advice. Los Angeles is a surprisingly tough place. A lot of people come here expecting sunshine and rainbows and end up not making it out. Don’t mean to sound ominous but the quicker you sharpen your teeth, the better.
