Having an exposed tang is definitely a plus.You can use it to crush various things or crack nuts, etc. You can also sharpen some tangs and use it to strike a ferro rod. You said a knife should have maximum flexibility and then you turn around and say who needs an exposed tang! I have the SRK with SK5 and wish it had an exposed tang. Mine cost $38!

You won’t regret it
Speaking real life daily chores, a usable knife should cut and slice well. To do so a 2,3, at most 4 millimetre of spine thickness is more than enough. Many people think the chubbier is better but real life has tasks for a knife demanding something else. The knife I have used the least in my arsenal is the useless pry bar Fallkniven A1 Pro.

CPM-3V is awesome. I know there are more modernized steels that are in higher demand lately, such as Magnacut, yet I keep cycling back to CPM-3V as my go-to for its well balanced properties. I am thrilled to see the price come down that low for such a high performance metal. I have a Cold Steel Master Hunter, which has the same style of rubberized, fully-encased handle. It's perfect for cold weather months and in complete agreement of your endorsement. Thanks so much for the video!
Not as grat, as Vanadis 4 Extra, but still a good choice. To be honest, I'd go chwck any other aspect of a knife, and lastly the steel, however, I'd even choose ballbearing steel, over 3V, because on all the knives I tried, it holds it's edge longer,and sharpens easier,having the same toughness and edge stability. In use, Vanadis 4 Extra beats all these noticably, on everything.Also in real use, can't see any difference in toughness/edge stability,

I have an old Carbon V and a new compact in SK5. They're both excellent. Have to think about one of these.
Is the SK5 steel decent? I'm tempted to get one, as It's a fraction of the price of the 3V.
I have never seen that in CPM-3V for less than $250, been on the list for that for months, grats on finding one at any price.
Why would you not want the biggest and the best at that price???❤ 3v is a phenomenal steel. And at that price, a no brainer. I've got The Recon Scout in 3v as well. 3v being such a fine, fine grain structure can be made so much sharper than lesser steels. It's edge retention is legendary. Great review, Great product. For ~ a decade the SRK has been a solid option. Steels have varied over the years, and that is important. Equally important though has been the heat treatment which CS has never skimped on. For the $$, the SRK is a solid option. Since I can't legally conceal carry a fixed blade in my state I have been using an SR1 in S35VN with the AD triad lock. Zero complaints as a medium duty camp knife paired with a bahco laplander (both are folding and legally concealable in my state)

That truly is exceptional value. CPM3V at that price. Way cheaper than a Fallkniven A1 and I suspect better steel. I picked up an A1 2nd hand last year. They cost $500NZ over here new but I got one at half price (and it wasn’t even a Chinese copy! 😂) good knife though

3V or Magnacut are my two favorite steels. And the only reason I haven’t bought the Cold Steel SRK in 3V is I have my Barkies. I borderline horder of knives.
I’d want a hammer at the back of the handle myself. I use a fixed blade knife for construction for work. I find it’s an amazing tool. Trim, split, scrape, hammer… and I wish it had a flathead, Phillips, and star bit somehow attached. (No I don’t want a multi tool or pocket knife.)

@@AlaskanFrontier1 Why don't you like the exposed tang at the end of the Garberg or the Demko? It may not be much, but it's still added utility. I don't see how it is a negative even in the winter since you don't touch the end of the knife when holding it.

cold steel makes really good knives, or at least they used to. and at least according to the numbers, CPM 3V is about the best steel you can get. As tough as the 8670 I forge, much better edge retention, some corrosion resistance.
My old SRK was made with AUS8 steel and probably about 20 years old. I’m not well informed on some of this new metal that knives are made with today. That’s a great looking knife but I’ll stick with what I know.
How did you know i was looking for the cold steel srk cpm-3v? Ive been looking at them vs other survival knives! I got 3 srk's. 1 is VG-1 Japan, 2nd one i got is Aus 8 Japan and the SK-5. They make 3 more i know of and that is a Carbon USA, San Mia Japan and Cpm-3v in Taiwan! I counted 6 different steels the srk is made in! If anyone knows of any i missed, let me know please? I have the SRK in San Mai and in 3v, and for the price (if you’re in North America) they are good knives. I haven’t had any fail me, but the sheaths they come in tend to be hit or miss. The sheath that came with the San Mei version was too tight and roughed up the edge, the one in 3v was too loose and the rattle was annoying; consider buying after market sheaths.
Also worth noting the Cold Steel sold a while back and ever since then their QC has suffered. But for the materials used, their prices are lower compared to their competitors; hope their heat treat is still consistent.
Is it a hollow grind?
On the Cold Steel website, it’s going for $259.99, not sub-$100. Worth it for under 100, not so sure about this price point, though.

@@AlaskanFrontier1 I find I carry and use the Rideback with scandi grind in place of my Becker BK2.
The rubber handle in my opinion totally disqualifies as the best survival knife. It is a fine knife indeed but rubber makes it vulnerable. A knife is not only the steel it is made of. 3V is awesome and tough but the handle is weak.
Also not a fan of the rubber for survival. I've had several times where my knife fell in or near a campfire and got burned.
Yes, it turns it into a disposable tool once the grip wears thin

They are good, but that partially tang worries me. I like and use them, but never see my main survival knife.

Does the SRK CPM3v still have a rat tail tang? If so I would not bet my life on it. My Fallkniven A1 has never let me down in 19 years. I have had to pound my A1 into a tree to stand on to extend my reach. 220 lbs did not break or even bend the blade.
Both are comparable in performance
All the SRKs produced to-date have the stick tang. It would be nice if CS released a full-tang model already.
for me its the bushcrafter cat/dog by messerfieber theyre truly indestructible knives and i know i can bet my life on it. but it always comes down to personal prefference i feel like

How far back through the handle does the tang go? Midway USA has a sale on these right now.
It's a through tang, so it pretty much goes to the end of the handle, it just doesn't protrude out or is exposed. This is a great blade for a great price at Midway.

@gorillahd9247 it's not a rat tang, but it isn't the thickness of the blade, it tapers down but still very strong blade and it runs down to end of handle. Stronger then any Kabar that's for sure.

Absolutely! That is one of my dream knives, in exactly the config I would most want - CPM3V in sabre grind, uncoated! [The only possible improvement I can think of is San Mai III in sabre or convex.]
However! HOWEVER! Why do I detect just that little hint of a "one knife option" sneaking into the conversation? Chopping down a tree with a 6" blade?
Seriously? In this day and age, why would that even arise? I can't think of anyone living as close to nature as people in Alaska probably do, venturing out into the wild under-prepared! That would be close to suicide!
As an absolute basic config one would have a saw. This would be a NOT-negotiable to a sensible person using common sense.
I personally would not go out without my CS Trail Master (San Mai III version), probably carried on my pack, with a belt knife (hopefully the SRK).
In addition, I would always have a Victorinox Hercules on a lanyard in my pocket.
I'm not sure how much fiddly bushcrafting stuff you guys do, but for me I'd like to try out the Victorinox Venture Pro and kit. I just saw a release from Felix Immler that they have redesigned, tested and produced a new sheath, eliminating all the niggly complaints that bushcrafters had with the first iteration! This is good news indeed, as the knife is proving to be a VERY good knife for that kind of specialised work. The "heavy stuff" can be catered for with the two Cold Steel knives and the saw. This set-up also means each knife does less, and more appropriate, work, thus preserving knife condition, and probably avoiding the need to have to sharpen knives in the field. This could be done in the workshop on return home! These modern steels (especially San Mai) should need very little work for a very long time!
That would be a decent and well-balanced config.
Just another point that has bothered me for a long time. When discussing excursions into the wilderness, much is made of kit weight and transporting it. Yet, I visualise going out, and in my mind there is ALWAYS some mode of transport involved in getting there, in order to get back, which is the whole point. [Car, truck, canoe, quad bike, sled, horse/mule, etc.] If this is actually true (and, of course, I could be totally wrong!) then surely weight is not really THAT much of a problem, or at least has problems that could be overcome without ditching gear. This becomes more relevant the longer the "expedition" is intended to take. [Note: the TV show "Alone" is, of course, a totally fictitious and unrealistic scenario at best. No-one in their right mind would actually do stuff like that with all those ridiculous limitations and rules etc!] So, my thinking is to have a decent kit set-up that will allow for a safe, and reasonably manageable experience, and then figure out how one could transport it all with you.
I see "survival" as the process of returning from/out of the wilderness, back to civilisation. Different rules should apply when undertaking expeditions out into the wilderness, and returning back home. "Living off the Land" is a wholly different ball game altogether, and extremely complex!

I have one in SK5 and dad has an older one (20 plus years old, new in box), that is still a flat grind - Sabre in Carbon V.
The newer ones like mine are a hollow - Sabre grind.

80crv2 is not a form of D2. D2 has a lot more carbon and a ton more chromium (~12%). 80crv2 is a small upgrade from SK5 or 1084. It has that little dusting of carbide formers (Cr, V, Mo) similar to how O1 upgrades from 1095. In fact, 80crv2 is kind of similar to O2, but without the massive amount of Mn. D2 is an air hardening steel using about 1800 degrees F. 80crv2 is an oil quench steel using about 1500 degrees F.
80crv2 has good toughness and okay hardness/wear_resistance and D2 has the direct opposite. D2 won't tend to rust if just wipe it dry. 80crv2 will rust if you look at it sideways in a humid environment. They are both good steels but they are nearly opposite optimizations.

At that category, TRC Mille Cuori, GSO 4.7, even Harsey Fighter, are the best options. Especially the first 2, make the SRK look so outdaded an so inferior, from any point of view. For the money, Harsey wins in my book.
I guess I’ll repeat myself. The SRK 5 is all you need. No one‘s a mountain man anymore. It’s the 21st century why would you pay a minimum of double for something that you’ll use if you’re lucky once a year. The real mountain men used knives like the green river knife 1095 steel and they really were in the mountains for most of their life. There’s still only $25. Have a good day
I know plenty of people who are up in and live in the Colorado Rockies (me included) that use our knives outdoors almost on a daily basis so you thinking that there are no mountain men anymore is just plain old wrong

The handle on my srk came loose . Those things are horrible. I broke the handle in 6 minutes. Non intentional.
Not a great knife, because of the handles, the rubber comes loose from the tang with hard use. S1 by Falkeneven are superior but more expensive. If you want cheap and durable get glock m81 knife. The SRK is cool looking but flawed.
Thanks for sharing but also have to say you are reviewing something you've clearly barely used, giving it top marks purely on the basis of what it's made from and the fact that it's relatively cheap.
After decades of making and using blades I can honestly say the powder Met steels are good for pose but not much else. I have a couple of quarter inch thick convex ground bark rivers in 3V which Batton similarly well and holds an edge similarly to my 4mm thick 01 steel scandi blades but it's harder to sharpen and 4 times the price.
Probably not a bad knife it just doesn't matter as much as people think
Do you have to describe about this knife? I'm not speaking ill of you. What I mean is, this knife is the best cost friendly knife. It is well-known that this product was greatly purchased by soldiers during Iraq War. Only one weak point is that this is not full-tang.
Another weak point is the rubber handle becoming loose because Cold Steel don't bother to epoxy the handle when inserted onto the stick tang.

This is kind of inaccurate. The SRK 3V is $100 only when it's on sale. Otherwise the price is usually around $130+. I disagree that it's the best survival knife for the money. Gerber Strongarm is the better survival knife and it's half the price.
I will only buy from companies with great heat treatment reputations Spyderco, Buck, etc.....but, lately I hear Cold Steel , and Essee take heat treatment VERY seriously !

And don’t need one. For years survival Lilly beat the living snot out of her SRK in AUS8 steel, which isn’t nearly as bomb proof as CPM3V.

I like the SRK however the term SURVIVAL knife calls for the absolute strongest tool possible meaning a full tang is a must. The SRK cannot be used for batoning. You are incorrect saying the blade length is whats needed for batoning. My SRK would never sitvive serios batoning. Even my little backpack EAFANGROW 121 with its 3 inch blade batons with much more confidence due to the full tang D2 . The SRK is a great for for nearly everything . Except survival. This video missed the mark.
The tang runs through the length of the handle to the lanyard hole and the 3V steel easily offsets the slimmer tang in terms of strength retention. You won’t break this knife any easier than a traditional “full tang.”
Cold Steel is too big of a risk if you need a "survival knife". It may break, it may not... (but it probably will if you actually hard use it). I have seen so many broken CS knives from SRKs to Recon Tantos so i know that they cannot be trusted. (my SRK warped the edge like it was playdoh) Zero r&d, probably very little or no heat-treating. CS knows that 99% of their knives are never used. They are just mallninja-wallhangers. CS buys/commissions knives from anywhere they can find and have the manufacturer stamp "cold steel" on the knives. Even CS themselves probably can´t tell you who made what knife, what composition the steel actually consists of and how it was treated/tempered (if at all). By the way.. if you get a large knife in CPM-3V for less than a 100 bucks i have bad news for you.. you didn´t.
I don't like that steel for a survival knife at all. So hard to sharpen in the field.

Hey, I review knives on my channel. Generally, cleaning them up and putting the knife back in perfect condition is done before filming, so the knife looks great.
Make a video, review some knives, and then on your own channel you can express your opinions any way you want.
Its a decent knife but way too thick and the handle is a joke.
After buying a Bark River Bushcrafter in CPM-3V,I don’t think I will ever need anything else.I’ve had a ton of knives and still have quite a few everything from ESEE,White River,OKC,KaBar,Mora,Cold Steel,etc all of which have great options but none have impressed me quite as much as my Bark River Bushcrafter..the scandi grind was my favorite for a long time but after trying that Scandi-vex,I will never go back..my first ESEE was the ESEE 4,while it was a well made knife,I didn’t really like it as it was just too thick behind the edge.the ESEE 3 is far better IMO.then there was a time where I was buying knife after knife and while many were decent,I kept returning to Mora’s that costed a fraction of the price.when it comes to value,I don’t think a Mora will ever be beaten.if you are on a tight budget,stick to Mora.if you want something nicer and of higher quality,I recommend a Bark River with the Scandi-vex..this isn’t to say their aren’t other options that can match or even exceed the quality you will get from Bark River but I personally don’t care because as long as nobody steals it and I don’t lose it,I know it will serve me well for the rest of my life
