I’m autistic, and I never realised why but your booths/ tables always felt like a sort of safe space to just hang around.
I’ve probably been to your tables more times than I can count just because it always felt like I was welcomed and it always made conventions feel special.
And along the same lines of I was tired or wasn’t feeling great I would somehow find myself walking over to your tables, and just being there around everyone’s energy made everything seem better and fun again!

Honestly if you have to stand for long periods of time there are converse style shoes for kitchens that have cushy insoles. They also have a no slip sole

I once went barefoot as that fitted my cosplay best. It was an event
I’ve met Tom twice. The first time I collared him as he was leaving a panel and heading to his table.
He stopped, was so polite and took a selfie with me before I realised there was a huge line of people waiting to meet him.
I felt awful. Point is, he could have told me to join the queue like everyone else but he didn’t treat me any worse than if I had queued.

I remember meeting Tom at his first MCM Manchester and the most memorable part was him complimenting my broad shoulders it was fun
I still remember when I met Tom and he tRIED TO EAT MY HAT. It was completely unprompted and hilarious and my friend got a picture of it at the perfect moment.

I actually apply Tom's "Assume every person you talk to could possibly be on the spectrum" to internet comments nowadays, recently somebody responded to a comment I'd left on a video fairly antagonistically so I obliged and antagonised them right back until I checked out their profile and realised they were on the spectrum and were just having a hard time and used the thing they were arguing about as a special interest comfort sort of thing.
I apply it to every person I meet that I didn’t knew before xD
This is a legit valid thing to do but consider, as well: we don't need to answer every (perceived) fight with a fight, like, at all. Sometimes we can all just be chill, and assume the best of random people we see on the internet and may never see again. Basic kindness is good

4 years ago I went to a very small Belgium convention called Brussels Comic Con and I had no hecking idea Tomska would be there with his booth. When I went inside I got handed a map with all the activities and sellers ..and then I saw his name. I couldn’t believe and was so excited cause I support his work so much! Then I met him, there was no queue whatsoever and just chatted with him. He is honestly so easy going and friendly! Then I wanted to buy merch but I really wanted a muffin time T-shirt and they had none, and somehow ... Tomska let me pay to have his T-shirt he was wearing cause it had the muffin on it! He then changed in the back to put on another T-shirt.I was shocked and so happy! Tom, you have no idea how precious that T-shirt is to me. I wear it quite a lot honestly xD And I’ll never forget this, Tom thank you for coming to our small country. I wish you the best! And I really hope I can meet you again someday and say thank you in person!✨✨✨😊

I am an autistic person who is typically not read as autistic, as I was diagnosed late in life and developed years of masking and neurotypical behaviour, so knowing that you go by a rule of assuming everyone is on the spectrum is honestly brilliant and great advice for anyone doing meetups.

I remember in 2019 seeing an ASDF stall thing in comic con london in october and being too scared to approach it because at the time it was my hyperfixation and didn't want to embarrass myself

I went to MCM in 2014/2015 with my friend, and we queued for so long to meet Tomska, but at the last minute I got really anxious and bolted out of the queue in terror of embarrassing myself in front of one of my favourite TH-camrs of all time. I can completely relate
This probably won't get seen, but your videos never fail to make me feel better, be it sickness or panic attacks. There are only a few things/people who can pull me out of a panic attack, and your content is one if them, so I would like to give you my thanks, Tom. 💙😊 Keep doing what you love!
I remember cosplaying as wolverine one year. It was the best and most awful experience the entire time.
The good
1-Wolverine is a very popular character and it brought a smile to a lot of people just to see it.
2-I look like Wolverine a bit so the costume pulled together very well.
3-The costume was easy to put together so getting dressed up was easy.
The bad
1-Wolverine wears heavy boots so my feet hurt the ENTIRE weekend. Heed Toms advice, wear good shoes
2-The hair was intensely gel'd which was a bit uncomfortable and I hadn't considered how easy it was to ruin with a simple hug. Have a place to go, like a hotel room to fix your costume.
3-Popular costumes are fun... until they aren't. As the day got near its end I got a bit tired of the photos and mentions. Sometimes i just wanted to walk to find my friends but go stopped. Again, having a hotel helps IMMENSELY.
This was all just from being in a popular costume (right after the wolverine movie hit). I can't imagine how much tougher it would be to be Tomska at a convention. Heed his advice. And also, be kind to cosplayers/celebrities. Some of us are very tired.

I remember going to a Glasgow Comic Con ages ago and being really surprised when Tom was there! I ended up not getting to meet him because the line looked about 3 hours long and at that time I just knew him as the asdf guy and hadn't actually watched any of the rest of his content. But I got the "Art is Dead" book there when it came out which was cool. Also got to meet Peter Davidson who was the 5th Doctor in Doctor Who!

Honestly watching Tom talk about how he accommodates for Autstic people made me so happy. I’ve always been afraid of going to meet and greets and absolutely embarrassing myself because I missed a social cue or I’ve said something wrong because of my autsim, it made me honestly not want to go to cons because how sick the idea of it made me. This video has made me lot more hopefully and excited for when I eventually do go to a con (whenever the hell that happens lol). And while I may be the only one this whole video has been really helpful and relieved a lot of my anxiety’s about cons in general and what to expect. :)
If you do attend a convention, one important thing I’ve found is that you need time to rest after it’s over. Conventions are super fun and exciting which has made me completely burnt out and unable to function for days afterwards.
This isn’t a reason not to go! I’ve had such a great time at every convention I’ve been to, I just want to share my experience to try helping others who haven’t done this before. Schedule a few days after the con so you can rest and do what you need to recover and you’ll be fine :)
I really like that about Tom too because I have a friend who loves Tom’s videos but has autism. And I know he’s already watched this video and now he felt great knowing Tom would accept him.
@Dawdle Rubbish Same. I relate to both of you here. My Asperger's Syndrome (a mild form of autism), anxiety, ADD, and depression has made me feel really awkward a lot of times. I miss a lot of social cues, especially before I went to high school. In fact I still do that at school because, to be honest, I just wanna be me. Seriously. (._.) I feel ridiculous...
Sometimes I see my autism as a curse. Sometimes I see it as a blessing. Other times I forget I even have it. It depends. But the fact that TomSka accommodates for that just warms my heart. ;) In fact, I love it whenever I see anyone do that.
you're definitely not alone in this! hearing him talk about it was honestly such a relieving feeling :) i love that he talks about experiences he had and how he learned from them and became a better person, i think those insights might help others who are unaware be more understanding as well!
About most folks at the convention are autistic so there's no fear in feeling you'll won't fit in or get embarrassed. As a autistic myself I been enjoying cons since Amecon 07, but expos like MCM I generally find it overwhelming so make sure to go with a trusted friend or family member, take breaks and most meet and greets celebrities are lovely and surprisingly down to earth...though some can be bad eggs but most folks talk and inform fellow fans. Check out social media and the official websites before you go to plan out and be prepared to feel exhausted from all the social awesomeness. Hope this helps and that you get to experience and gain friends at a convention!

I remember seeing Tom's tweet asking for pics and stories for this video and I meant to participate but my story isn't all that interesting so I'll just share it here with everyone.
I met Tom at Otakon in Baltimore, Maryland. Otakon in Baltimore is usually in June/July so of course it was incredibly hot. I was with my wife, her little sister and a friend of mine who had never been to a con before. I noticed the ASDF banner on the horizon and wormed our group in that direction. I was surprised to actually see Tom as I'd assumed he would be elsewhere filming or doing a panel. We came up and said hello, expressed our delight in his projects and ASDF and I looked over the shirts he had available and bought 3. I got a "doing an internet" shirt, a "mine turtle" shirt and cool looking Zelda shirt with a glow in the dark triforce. Without us asking, Tom came around the table and took pictures with all of us. After choosing the shirts Tom said "Cool, hold on a sec" and started making his way around. I remember laughing because as he came to the gap in the table he was stopped in his tracks by a gaggle of giggly fan girls and Tom had to awkwardly navigate thru them. "Oh! uh...hello ladies. Pleasure to meet you, excuse me a moment". The girls didn't seem to mind and were literally basking in his presence. He finally made his way to us and we took the pictures. I have them saved on an old SD card stuck in a Nintendo 3DS somewhere.
Something I didn't realize until much later was this was only a few months after Edd's passing in 2012. His best friend had died and Tom was still out there, kissing hands and shaking babies with the unwashed masses. A cancer survivor myself, I felt bad retroactively for not offering my condolences although he probably appreciated not revisiting that pain. Regardless, I was still impressed with the way he handled himself, his professionalism and his humility. Tom is one of the good ones.

"What is a Naruto, what does it taste like?" A naruto is a fish cake often used to top ramen, they have a little swirl of a different colour in them. I imagine it tastes a little salty and umami-y I've never been able to find any when I was planning to make ramen so I don't know what they taste like.

It’s not often I got to the comments section but listening to this and the way you address autism at cons is truly wonderful to hear and your perception of it is pretty bang on, for me at least. As you said, it’s a spectrum. As someone with autism, I find comic cons such a strange juxtaposition - I hate social interaction yet I’ll enter some of the busiest places to meet that person I done did see on the television and or film. It’s crazy but it’s an experience you remember. Thanks for sticking with conventions for so long and I hope to get to one you’re at soon!
The only time my friend and I tried to bring our own food to a con the security people said outside food wasn't allowed and threw the sandwiches she'd made for us in the trash right in front of us so that was lovely
I have to say, the last time i met you you genuinely were a delight and it's so cool to hear how much of an effort you have made to accommodate autism as a default!!! I'm quite awkward with strangers (even those who I think are chill) but I'm not on the autism spectrum, and I gotta say your attitude really made me feel very calm :D Knowing that even if you mess up you're the sorta dude who will both improve AND own up to past mistakes makes you feel so much more approachable ♥

I once was the only cosplayer left at the place were the photoshoot from my characters game was held. And the voice actor guest at the event for that game came running up with a team and asked me if there was a meet still going. I sent them to were I think the panel was still going on. But I afterwards heard that she never came. Maybe it was too late. I feel so sorry for her since she didn't know about the cosplay meetup and when hearing about it at a QnA she got so genuinely hype! I hope she will come back to that con.

Met you, Dodie, and Ashens at an MCM London a few years agi, and my main memory from that is that i made Ashens spill his drink on his trousers not even an hour into the event starting.

I'm most likely going to be buried in comments, but I just want to say that I appreciate that you make assuming autism the norm. It's a little morbid/weird to have to do that, but as an autistic man, I do understand why you have to do that.
For me personally for example, I have met you in 2015 in Vidcon Amsterdam that one first year, and I just don't have much to talk about (partially) due to my autism. I told you I followed your content since the newground days, and that I just still loved your content, and that is all that was said. I just didn't know what else to talk about that wouldn't be too intrusive or weird, so I just choose not to :)

I think fame is honestly not worth it. Especially in this age, anonymity is a blessing. I truly appreciate being able to slip through crowds unnoticed or goof off with my friends in a corner or even cry in a corner at a convention. (Yes, I have cried at an anime con lol.) I think a lot of people don't appreciate the simple joys of being a rando.

As someone who is autistic and has a hard time with sarcasm I find it really sweet you take that into consideration. I often have to take a moment to say to myself they are probably being sarcastic and look at a situation carefully before emotionally reacting and it is exhausting.

I'm really new in TomSka fandom, but it took me by surprise on the sheer amount of content that i can enjoy that's there in main channel, DS and this one. Its not forced. It just flow... one after another.. keep making stuff mate. 👍

It makes sense that you say you've become good at all these little things that make the meet and greets go smoothly: when I met you at MCM I remember thinking "oh, he's definitely got a lot of experience in this" because I was a bit awkward and intimidated but you were so nice, kept the conversation going when I didn't know what to say, etc. so I have a very good memory of this moment. And now I have a book that doesn't fit properly in any fucking bookshelf, but it's signed, so it's alright.

When you started talking about people on the spectrum and how you try to keep in mind how ANYONE you meet could be autistic i literally almost started crying. I got diagnosed only a couple of weeks ago and i've always struggled with people who use indirect communication. The fact that you keep in mind that any of your fans could be on the spectrum is SO helpful. i know from experience that if a stranger was very patient with me that it was always such a relieving feeling that stayed with me for such a long time. Thanks for doing that man, you're a legend.

I went to a few SITC’s in my teenage years and you were always my favourite person to meet because of your sincerity. I don’t watch much TH-cam myself anymore but every month or so I will drop back in on your channels and see how things are going. Thanks for being a good guy mate.
