    Thanks David. I had learnt from you how to do the merge inheritance. Just didn't understand "why" to do the merge inheritance. I kept on doing 'copy geom" for my sub assembly skeletons. But I now understand the differences and reasons for merge inheritance. Main skeleton -> sub assmb skeleton = Merge Inheritance. Skeleton -> Part = copy geom. 👍👍

      Well, I would caution against hard and fast rules like that. For me, it's when I want to grab everything, it's Merge. When I want to grab everything and make a few changes, it's Inheritance. When I want to grab just some stuff, it's Copy Geometry.

    Excellent explanation as usual. Thank you !! could you please make a video that shows how to use the inheritance feature in order to document the manufacturing process of a simple part ? for example a casted then machined part. your videos are so interesting to a point that makes me want to know how to use it in real life engineering application. very very interesting. Thank you Dave !!

      Yes, I can combine that with another video I was planning on doing.

    Hello David. Can we change the number of pattern instances of the inherited part. For example if the part has 6 holes and i would need 10 holes after inheritance. Is that possible?

    Hello Sir,
    Like that model I need only outer surface of the body but surface will be fully solid inside like a volumetric model.
    How can I do this types of models
    I need outer shape of this same assembly but inside body is fully solid
    How can do
    It is possible

    In my creo 6, the merge/Inheritance comment is not enabled, Why! Due to package or else something. Please share your opinion.
    Thanks.

      You need AAX.

    so the difference between inherit and merge is the possibility to use "varied items" dialog? and pass parameters from base model? and retrieve base model from inherit feature?

      Yes to the first question. The other two depend on which version you’re on.

    Is there a way to later on change the 'source' model in a merge feature? I run in to this problem when I save a copy of an existing assembly or part to go explore a different/new concept... the copy parts still reference the original 'source' model but I really want them to use a new source model

    • @CADPLMGuy
      @CADPLMGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be able to Edit Definition and change the source model. Often a bunch of features will fail but Edit References is good for fixing that. Is the new source model a copy of the original, a little different, or radically different?
      There are other tricks that involve creating a model of the same name - either the source model or the model that contains the merge feature - and having it reference the intended geometry. Then you open that model and then the assembly. It's basically tricking Creo based on model names.
      Provide some more details or an example model and I can probably put together a video.

      @@CADPLMGuy In this case the new source model will be a copy of the original source model. The first half of the source's features will be reused in the new copy, the other half will be changed radically. For some reason when I edit definition of the merge feature and either right click and hit 'replace' or simply click the folder icon to choose a new model I get a warning stating that I can only change the source part if it has a family table, I can respond back with the exact warning message tomorrow when I'm back on that computer.
      Also for reference there are about 8 parts in the top level assembly in this case, and I will need to perform this merge redefinition within each of those parts in the new copied assembly, I'm not sure if I would be able to use the tricks you mentioned in this case but those could definitely come in handy in the future. Thank you!

    • @SeanMcDonnell33

      so the actual warning message down in the message log is: "Ref model that is not instance and have empty Family table can not be redefined."

    • @CADPLMGuy
      @CADPLMGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're getting that error, then you're probably going to have to play the game with model names. Let me think out the steps and try creating a model to map it out.

    • @SeanMcDonnell33
      @SeanMcDonnell33 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CADPLMGuy Ok thanks! I could have sworn I was able to easily replace the ref model in the past, I wonder what caused the error this time. Also, for added level of difficulty I'm working within a windchill workspace so I believe the 'rename' functionality is limited. But if you make a more generalized video I can probably work 'offline' to figure it out

      Do you have the license for the Advanced Assembly Extension (AAX)? I have a free download on my website that explains what AAX provides. See "AAX Overview" near the bottom of this page: www.creowindchill.com/downloads
