Can there just be More than 1 band
I from H-Town. Been playing trumpet for 19 years. Never played in a college band however but music is music. With that being said, TXSU will never beat SU with 22 trumpets. Lower brass is drowning them badly. Second, TXSU arrangements are not proper for there instrumentation. Playing loudly doesn’t mean they are killing. SU arrangements fit their band which makes their sound so much better overall compared to TXSU. You can’t beat SU in power and they have 70 trumpets I believe. All parts are heard and they kill every arrangement. TXSU fans just too prideful to be honest with themselves
Its recruiting hurting TxSU, Im not sure if its the culture or theres alot of other great things to doin Houston, but playing musical instruments is not popular.
TRU Athletics Bro same here. I marched in the Ocean for 4 years. I’m Ocean to the Heart...but I cannot give my school the W because of the love. Southern won this because they are balanced. 22 Trumpets against 50plus??? It’s no match.

So basically what you're saying is because they are bigger they win... I agree they have the formula, but to discredit the Ocean for not having numbers when it's clear that they push almost as much as the Juke is unfair. I still give Juke the win, even though they repeated twice. I agree that there are some balance issues, but they are few. The bone section is too deep not to be heard imo. Other than that, for the style the Ocean executes well.
jdmoney86 yes it is. The band programs in Houston are non existent. All of the feeder schools we had 15 years ago, who had larger bands with premiere musicians, their band programs have close to no students. Kids in the city are more focused on the other opportunities. Plus the scholarships are just not available

Texas southern
TxSU is baritone heavy with a drop of mello. SU is very balanced. The difference is pretty clear even though gym acoustics will make it appear to sound even. That arrangement of Trippin by SU is not good though and they do have tempo issues this year but they are still the winners of the battle.

Su for the first round! TxSu arrangements are dry and plan. This will always keep them a level below SU. TxSu also need to work on there balance. Lower and middle brass is drowning out the poor trumpets.
When southern gets out blown, their fans bring up balance, arrangements, and instrumentation, but when the S goes up against bands like FAMU, BCC, and Norfolk the fans scream that "oh they ain't blowing, we don't care about that cute shit" foh

SU won last night! 8-4! Not even close. The only thing I was willing to give the “Ocean” was their brass. They was strong, but they lacked arrangement, they were also being controlled by southern as well! Southern dictated the match, that’s why The Ocean loss. They tried to play/match SU’s arrangements which aren’t their strong suite. They lacked versatility and articulation, it’s ok to be a power band.
