No Router Edge Profile - Woodworking Tips and Tricks

  • How I cut a deep chamfer on my tables with no router. Turns out you can't really buy router bits big enough to make this cut. Even if you could find them, you'd need a crazy powerful router to spin it. AND you'd need a bunch of those huge bits for every different angle. In this video I'll show you how to cut any angle (up to 45) with a track saw, and have it line up perfectly on each side.

Scotland. The calculation is not difficult. The distance from the top of the table to the point where the cut starts is simply the distance out divided by the tangent of the angle. For 22 degrees tan(22)=0.404. Using the figures on your video (at 2.29) we have 0.5"/0.404=1.24" (measured 1.3"), 0.45"/0.404=1.11" (measured 1.18") and 0.4"/0.404=0.99" (measured 1.0"). This is within experimental error. Keep up the excellent work.

Potentially off because your saw might be cutting at 21 deg and not 22. If you do all the calcs with 21 deg then you get 1.30 in. 1.17 in. and 1.04 in., which are right on with what you measured. Awesome videos! Thanks for doing this.

The distances not being the same is probably due to the fact that you're cutting a triangle. You're track is moving along one leg of the triangle and the blade is cutting the hypotenuse. If I had to guess, your numbers would work out with A^2+B^2=C^2.

Houston, TX. To find the length of the second leg of your right triangle you need to use the following formula: a=b*tan(angle). b= the depth of your track from the edge of the top and well your angle is 22. Since the tangent function is not linear that is why your values do not decrease in a linear fashion or an equal amount as you move the track in. Love the edge profile, it is simple and sleek but at the same time is eye-catching.

Due to your videos I'm building my own first dinning room table for my own home and that's because you inspired me to get it as perfect as yours! I really love that look it gave your table. I'll leave the mathematical equations to those experts. I personally don't care about the technical aspects of the angles. I just do what looks and feels right to me. I am not as fortunate as you guys that have track saws. I just use a really straight piece of trex 5/4 board and clamps. Little of measuring to do throughout but so did you. I am going to do this on my concrete tops because I love your angle. Thank you for your videos and your honesty throughout. It's refreshing as well as appreciated. You are a master at your craft.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Very neat, practical and good-looking edge detail. I always found that putting deep chamfers on e.g. shelf edges gave a much "lighter" look concealing the true thickness behind.
I have a much more difficult edge profile challenge and this one might prompt a good deal of debate... but as you are a live-edge guru this seems very much the right place to put it up for discussion.
My challenge is to create an interlocking / matching edge for a pair of waney elm burr boards, so that the adjacent boards of a two-board table top fit into each other with minimal gaps. The figure and colour (color!) of the burrs is a key feature, and I want to avoid smoothing off the details of the edge more than necessary. The burr portions of each will inset into a relatively plain part of the adjacent board - they are boards from the same tree, placed head to tail.
To cut a matching vertical contour on the "other" board is easy (just a template and a vertical router bit) but how can it be made "3D" so there is no void below - the waney burr edges are far from vertical so there is almost no wood at the extreme edge.
Experts would of course fill with epoxy but is there a no-fill option? I think it's a really hard cut to create - even a copy-carver type device does not work because it creates a positive copy not a negative copy. The half way compromise might be to cut back from the burr (positive) edge at an angle, a bit like your straight example here, but following the edge like a scribed baseboard corner. Then make the matching angled profiled cut on the other board rather than a full 3D surface.
I hope this prompts some fun discussions and tool ideas. I've already had several completely impractical thoughts but I can't find anyone who has done this....
    cheers from Cambridge, UK.
    Miles

Very unexpected profile. I absolutely love it. It's different and it has flair. Very classy. Thanks.

Calgary. When trying to acquire a certain depth of bevel, you could take your initial measurement of .50 equaling 1.3" and write it out .50 over 1.3" = .35 over X inches
    Eg. #1) .35 x 1.3" ÷ .50 = .91"
    Eg. #2) .50/1.3" = .40/X"
    .40 times 1.3" divided by .50 = 1.04"
Could save some trial and error.
    Hope it can help.
    Awesome piece, by the way!

Love this technique. Now I know how to get a 60 degree taper on my cantilevered shelf I am making for the study. That chamfer incidentally lines up then with the taper on my blackwood desk I have here

From Cancun, Mexico.... loved those chamfers, they look very elegant, reminded me of a Van Beuren dinner table at my parents house, the only thing is that it was round, so now I wonder how they did it....
