Nick,... you’re very informative... even to the newbies... you speak well and you explain things so everyone can understand.... I know it’s difficult for some to follow along .... I learned about conventional bait casters at a very young age as I am almost 60 years old ... suffix it to say bait casters are definitely not for the newbies......they end up making chow mein or sometimes called birds nest... lol 😂
Also Lamiglas has been around since I was just a kid and they are quality rods for the price ... it’s not the brand or how much you paid for your rod like some blow hards preach... it’s about what feel good in your hands and what works for you... ..!

9 foot medium light 6-12 with 10 pound mono is my go-to (lure 1/4 - 3/4 ounce) and 4000 series spinning reel.
I bought a 10ft 6in okuma 10-20lb baitcaster fishing rod for salmon and steelhead and it works great I put a 30lb braided line on a shimano TRX200AXG 200 caster reel and I love it😊

Hey I have that same reel an it doesn't free spool well. I use black Max's for everything from float fishing to drift fishing but your totally right it is easier to learn with Spinning but when I float fish with one I just tune it so it'll free spool somewhat I find it's alot nicer on smaller holes being able to keep the line tight an up of the water awesome discussion would like to have someone to discuss the science behind this stuff more thank you
This is seriously perfect content for beginners, thank you for including us!! I’ve been overwhelmed trying to figure out the fishing world. Watching as many videos as possible to learn about fish, water conditions, techniques, gear and hardware, etc.. Almost considered “I’m not cut out for this” .... but I really do need to fish my own fresh fatty fish for health reasons. So these videos help me very much, I truly appreciate you Nick for taking the time to make this type of content!! I’m a bit unsure about going after salmon/steelheads since I’ve never fished before and am a small person. Scared of being over powered by a fish. So far I’ve bought two Ugly Stix GX2, 5’ L and 6’ M, and some line to start practicing knots and leader lines. After seeing this video I realized my 6’ M rod isn’t salmon/steelhead caliber 😬. Is it possible to actually catch a salmon/steelheads on a 6’ M?! I’m only 5’1 and not sure I’ll be able to manage larger rods like a 8’6 let alone a 9’6 😓.
I think you would do just fine with a bigger rod. A lot of the time salmon and steelhead rods are pretty light and I think you may find that you can swing it with ease. Don’t be intimidated, feeling a fight of a fish of that size and strength is amazing. I always enjoy doing these types of videos and it always makes my day to hear someone caught their first fish with the help of these videos. There is a lot to try and soak in and it can get very overwhelming. Any rod and reel could get your gear into the water but you’d definitely want something built more for that type of fishing. If you are new then just keep doing what you are doing “baby steps” soak in what info you can, time on the water is crucial. Find a couple techniques (or one) and work on that technique, and then maybe move on once you feel comfortable with it. Confidence goes a long way.
Thank you for the advice and the boost of confidence, I will apply it. But I won’t lie, I am a little intimidated by salmon and steelhead - they put up a good fight. You’re definitely teaching me a lot and helping me prepare to get started! It’ll be a very sweet moment when I catch my first salmon!! I’ll buy a bigger rod. What reel size would you suggest for the President Pflueger? I tried figuring out how they’re sized with rods by doing research but honestly didn’t understand how to pair them right.
thanks for the info man! i live in southern michigan and i hear alot of people talk about center pin reels. whats your thought on them? to be hinest since im just starting out i will probobly stick with a spinning rod set up but just curious if you have used them and are they spicifc to one style of fishing?
Enjoyed your video. I hear lots of different opinions on leader strength & length. Im hoping to start out with spinners & spoons for steelhead this season with 30 lb braid mainline, so 12 lb fluoro leader? 18 lb? 20? 3 feet, 5 ft 12 ft? I hear so many different answers. Thx. Also I have 2 abu garcia revo toro low profile reels the winch & the NaCl some say they prefer the low profile I also have 3 open face reels from 2500 up to 5500. From what Ive seen it sounds like around a 4000 size reel would work well for a 9'6" rod med power fast action with 30 lb braid. Thoughts? I have a 5000 a 5500 then the 2 low profiles do I need to buy another reel Im at 9 now & 12 rods...gettin out of hand

Good video, I don’t recommend those particular lamiglas. Lamiglas makes some fine rods, but those aren’t them. I strongly recommend you go to the seconds bin at lamiglas. For 100 you can buy some cosmetic issues infinity and kwik rods etc. every now n then a si makes it in there! Not trying to bash on your stuff. I’m just trying to share some good info.

Didn't get enough information on the Pflueger reel. Can you give us some specs model number etc. I just move within a block of the Dosewallips river on the Olympic Peninsula. Question for you Nick. You posted a video on a few options for beginners on salmon/steelhead poles a while back. What reel do you recommend putting on a Okuma Celilo 9'6 rod?
I guess it kinda depends on how much you are looking to spend... Shimano has some inexpensive reels. I've been a fan of the Pflueger President reels, they are affordable and durable. Okuma has some good ones too... there are a lot out there, but the smooothest reel i have is a shimano catana 4000. It's new and i've only used it a handful of times but i've been impressed so far
Hello nick I’m trying to find a lamiglas and I seen the x11 you had is it the medium action 9”4 rated for 8 to 12 I believe would that be a good rod for steelies paired with the reel you have on yours

Anytime! There are SO many options out there, it’s hard to say. I usually try to not spend too much since I’m rough on all my stuff. I spend between $75-100 for a rod and $50-75 on a reel.
I'll be going steelhead fishing for the first time at elk creek in Erie pa everyone has been telling me to use fluorocarbon line 4 to 6 lbs because water is shallow and clear. What is your opinion on that. Thanks
From what I’ve seen the water is very low and clear and totally different than fishing around here. I have never fished there myself but would definitely go with what’s recommended, though I’d stick on the heavier end

9’6” medium, moderate action is usually a good choice..
How do you pick your reel size? Balance?
How do you get your braided line to sink when using spinners? Doesnt part of it try to float while part of it (lure side) trys to sink? Or do you tie uni knot to mono? Or does the 30lb braid sink well?
Elijah Stone - The 30lb sinks pretty decent. The line does tend to float a bit though, more so when it’s brand new. I usually have a swivel going from braid to mono because I like having that extra piece of hardware to keep the line from twisting. That actually puts a little extra weight on the line as well and helps it get down. My technique for lures/spinners is “swinging” them, I’m gonna do a video for it soon. It has worked really well for me, just takes some practice and it helps get the lures through a better strike zone for a longer time.. The braided line makes it easier to do as well..

They all have their ups and downs but my recommendation will almost always be a Medium action, especially for bank fishing.. Thanks for watching the vid... It seems like forever ago when i did this one, so much has changed since then... I've been using Okuma rods a bit more lately. I used to be all about lamiglas rods but i started having too many issues with the eyelet inserts coming out.. Good luck out there.. Glad the video helped some

The 40, same as a 4000 is perfect in my opinion. Especially since it will work for salmon and steelhead.

I'm a native to this area and done all sorts of fishing off and on, but I'd consider myself a beginner with most anything. And I've never gone after steelhead. So last year I picked up two Okuma Avenger AV 40b reels for $5. One even still had the box and all packaging and owners pamphlet. My question is, will this reel work for steelies? It has 8/10/12 lbs rating on the spool. I currently have it wound with 12 lbs test, but mono not braided. I'm happy to toss away all that line and go with heavier braided if this reel will be okay. Thoughts? Thank you for the great videos and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
You’ll be good even with the mono. Lots of people use a lighter setup and play the fish instead of horsing it in. I’d get some fluorocarbon line to use as leader though. Steelhead are picky and will get spooked. A chinook salmon I’m just trying to piss it off and get it to hit the presentation for getting in front of it. With a steelhead I’d try to be more subtle and give it something that would actually be drifting down the stream that it would normally strike.

so I put 125 yards 20 pound braided on my pfluger but rated only to 10 pound braided at like 225 yards. will that make a huge difference. or will I be good to go for the most part.

Just bought a okuma cellio 9.6 what size reel would you recommend.2500,3000??
Sorry to take so long to respond. I would go with a 3000 but a 2500 would work as well but getting down on that smaller size.
I have the same president that you have it says 20# braid would 30 be ok also how many yards can you fit on that size reel I just bought mine today and I’m going steelhead fishing the first week of April
PNW anglers - I have 30lb on mine and about 150yards of it. Luckily most reels show how much braid can be put on as well. When you buy braided line it will show the diameter it is in comparison to regular line. The 30lb braid I use is equivalent to using 12lb line. I think a lot of people get confused on that when they are first starting out. Good luck when you get out. Let me know how it goes

Joseph Scotchmer - I definitely agree, there are very few products that can take the abuse I dish out. I’ve always been happy with them.
Great video, one thing to add maybe is the difference between a spinning rod and casting rod. I’ve noticed some newer anglers using a casting rod with a spinning reel. The casting rod has smaller eyes which limits casting ability the way line comes off spinning reel. Haha I noticed u started to touch on the difference as I was typing this. Have a great day

It definitely limits your casting. Thanks for adding that. And I’m not big on bait rods during winter time considering how fast those small eyelets freeze closed during freezing temps.

Basically.. When it comes to fishing for steelhead, if im using the bait caster its usually for spinners and that type of gear.. doesn't do so well for bobber fishing if you are newer to the sport and haven't used a bait caster.. and I do think that spinning reels are much better for bobber fishing, and casting..

After getting a birds nest in the dark at 6am and losing like 40 mins of fishing time a couple times I’m done with baitcasters for salmon or steelhead
MaximumMotionPictures - I hear ya there. I just clipped a leaf on a cast the other day and it caused a pretty bad birds nest. Baitcasters definitely have their perks but who wants to lose fishing time having to deal with that mess?
I use 50lb power pro, 20lb big game bumper and 8-15lb leaders. I can get away with this setup for anything from fall chinook to silvers and steelhead. Just my 2 cents.
Northwest Oregon Fishing I think I may bump up my braid strength to a 50lb. My 30lb hasn’t let me down yet so I’m kind of hesitant. Same deal though, all my rods have it and are used for chinook, coho, and steelhead. I may mix up a couple setups this year and see how it goes. Your two cents is much appreciated.
Do you use a mono leader on your braid?
sandwich eater I usually use a fluorocarbon leader. Roughly 3ft and between 12-20lbs depending on the conditions

Is there a problem with using a spinning reel on a casting rod and vice-versa?
Quang Pham - yes there is. I did it once when it was mix and match or not fish. Still caught a fish but here is just a reason or two why it’s not a good idea.. if you use a spinning reel on a bait casting rod it switches where you are putting pressure on the rod if you get a fish on, considering a bait caster sits on top and your eyelets face up. A spinning reel will make it to where they are under the rod and facing down. The rods not meant to bend the opposite direction with that much force. Also the eyelets on each type of rod is setup for the way that the matching reel spots out line. Baitcasters are parallel to the rod whet a spinning reel is perpendicular. In the end, it’s best to just match up the right rod and reel

I'm curious if you have given any other baitcasting reels a try besides that Quantum Pulse...that was the first baitcaster I ever owned, and try as I might, I could not bring myself to like that reel. It was awful, and I really feel like you need to spend a bit more money on a baitcaster to really get a solid functioning reel; the entry-level options are very frustrating to use. Entry level spinning reels on the other hand, for the most part, are totally fine. I personally prefer a baitcaster for bobber fishing, its much easier to free spool and let line out than a spinning reel. There's some pretty solid baitcasters available on ebay for very reasonable prices; Daiwa Fuego CT is $60 for example, and its SO much better than that quantum. If your spool tension is set correctly, the line will come off the reel effortlessly without any drag (I expect you need to use that particular reel with a fairly tight spool tension, which is why you haven't found it to work very well for bobber fishing). When extending your drift downstream, its much faster to set the hook on a baitcaster than a spinning reel because you have to manually flip the bail and then reel down to set the hook, whereas on a baitcaster you just reel and set, or you can just thumb the spool if you don't have much slack. Half a second can be the difference between a fish on and a whiff.
Andrew Ikehara-Martin - Your input on reels is much appreciated. I have tried many types over the years. Cheap and expensive, and some inbetweenI don’t have issues fishing with either type of reel. The point was for beginners And recommending that a baitcaster wasn’t the the best route for starting out for winter steelhead. The Quantum Pulse definitely isn’t anything special, but that’s irrelevant. It’s all personal preference when it comes to fishing

I definitely wouldn’t recommend the quantum considering how fast I ran into issues with it, but I’m tough on my gear and breaking expensive stuff adds up quick.
I appreciate your input on baitcasters, it’s something that comes with time and experience. Trying to figure out how to work it correctly AND trying to figure out the Steelhead thing is a bit much for someone just starting out, that’s why I usually recommend a casting reel, easy to use and if you are already familiar one, then you can focus on tracking down the fish and fine tuning some techniques for catching them, then maybe experiment with a baitcaster during summer time.
