  • Steve and Eydie did this great television special with Ethel Merman about Cole Porter - Steve & Eydie: From This Moment On... Cole Porter (1977). It's seen here with some other various Steve and Eydie performances we found on old VHS tapes

Having corresponded with Steve he like us truly recognised the magic & greatness of his wife’s voice. When Eydie opened up your troubles took a back seat transporting you to a world of sheer pure entertainment.

This is one of the best musical TV specials of its era. The concepts of the big production numbers are absolutely right for Porter's music. The lush orchestrations bring Cole Porter's music to new romantic heights and the singing throughout is superb. (I mean, you got Eydie, Steve, Bob, and the great Ethel Merman - of course the singing is superb.) How great it is to have Ethel Merman singing MAKE IT ANOTHER OLD FASHIONED as if it's a brand new song. The highlight, for me, of the entire special is Steve, Bob and Ethel singing IT'S DELOVELY. What a sweet sequence. I get a chill down my spine when Ethel comes walking down the aisle and throws her coat into the seats, ready to take the number to new heights.

From a bygone era. Such great composers for music and the singers that do justice to the songs. Never again to hear such beautiful music.

Steve and Eydie what a magical combination! Just wanted to get that out of the way. This production is first rate and timeless and authentic. The concept was handled with adult perfection and could compete with anything produced today.
The history provided via Merman/Hope is priceless.
The elegant sets, costumes and the simple seamless choreography is
    Perfect.
Tv specials around this period followed a tried and true formula:
Star, usually 2 guests. One guest to attract younger audience and one more established guest. Writen contemporary forced jokes (dated) . One production number. The star singing a medley of their hits. This formula worked.
However this special was well thought out and executed. Well above the usual fare.
Barbra 's specials and the Judy, Frank,Dean special are two that come to mind.
However there is nothing to compare with the respectful love that radiates from watching these two talented professionals.

Greatly enjoyed "From This moment On." Ethel Merman's voice was as strong as ever. Eydie Gorme looked lovely and hearing her is always a pleasure. But it was her early clips following the show that entranced me. I couldn't turn away; Gorme was monarch and I sat immobilized --- an unwilling but enraptured subject. Marvelous artist.
