THANK YOU MARCUS! As a faithful member of the C100 cult I STILL LOVE THIS CAMERA. You also nailed my biggest gripe of this ancient workhorse camera - the fixed center focus point. Yes I finally upgraded to a C70 and love it, but the C100 just is such a venerable, reliable, feature rich camera with great battery life and TINY, remarkably gradable files for its crap 4.2.0 8 bit codec. I'm holding onto mine for streaming, a safety cam or time lapse! If Canon had upgraded this camera to 422 10bit internal SD with a decent Mbps, and improved autofocus they would have sold a million of these in this wonderful form factor !
I have owned the C100 and the MK2 C100 , I now own a C70 but could NOT get rid of my MK2... its SO good and does everything I need. So amazing... the picture is amazing !
And there are people who “need” an a7siii to be a good filmmaker… People that don’t understand the value you get from a c100mkii… If there would be only one camera I stay for ever it would be this one. And a 18-35 1.8 from sigma. You can tell all the stories you need with this kind of gear. Thanks for the tips for the 35mm that can face track, nice to know !
Finally took the plunge and got 3 C100 MK2 through eBay. The cameras are in good condition and total cost was around 3 grand. This was my issue too -- a good STM that can almost get the quality of an L series lens. The two cameras will be stationary and the third will be the walk-around cam. This is where the lens will come in handy, especially in low light situations. Love the c100's and this video guide!
And there I was browsing the web for solutions so I could respond to your 1 year ago video on the same subject. Glad you figured it out before I could.
I also used the C100ii in 2016 and LOVED it. I was first worried since it didn't do 4K and I really wanted 4K at the time, but compared with my 4K camera even now the C100ii's regular HD still looks better. At the time I wished I could've afforded it but it was way out of my price range.
I agree that I also see more sharpness here with the cheap macro lens.... and the other 95% of the video with the expensive lens looks a little blurred on my laptop (looks better on my Quest 2 VR headset) and even looks kinda' odd or jittery or losing focus as he moves his head, maybe the lips are out of sync when his arms are moving fast ? So although after watching this video (and 20 like it last week) I was super excited yesterday to get a C100mk2(I bought a Canon C300PL mk1 last month for $600), I am not sure today about it unless I get the cheap macro lens or other cheap lenses. Why would it look worse or blurry with the expensive L lenses. (I am a novice camera user) Now...I love Markus, his videos and hard history of amazing work, so Im not being critical of him. Im a novice camera user. I know Markus can make anything look amazing in the editing room....so Im hoping that this camera is really all that and a bag of chips for a TH-cam creator for under $2k Canadian used. (below is my cute $600 C300PL with a fake coffee cup lens since I dont want to buy an expensive Cinema lens yet:) facebook.com/photo/?fbid=908496134145762&set=pcb.908491590812883
I love the tough metal body and heavy solid feel of the Canon C300pl and 100. I will also look for this macro lens. In this video I also agree that it looked much clearer and held focus on the eyes with the cheaper macro.
Thanks for the information MarkusPix! There are quite a few lenses that supports FACE DETECT Autofocus and that you do not have to spend a fortune on them either. For instance there is - EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM , - EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM , - EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM , - EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM. The question is: who needs another camera when they have at least one Canon EOS C100 Mark II?
The Canon 35 mm f2.8 STM macro lens : {Note to myself: Get this lens because it does full face tracking autofocus. It also keeps a nice soft background that's acceptable. And the price is easy on my pocket. The lens keeps nice images too. } I'm still using the Canon T-3I and think that the lens will work on it. Until I get another camera as described by Markus. I have to make do with what I have.
Try the ef 40/2.8 and the efs 24/2.8 both are stm & both are very thin. I had the 40mm and for years it was attached to my camera due to how small and sharp it was. I do really enjoyed them heavily and do believe they are ridiculously overlooked for what they offer ..
This was very interesting. One thing I'm not sure you ever answered is why does the STM focus off to the side and the L series not focus off to the side. Sorry just not sure why that would happen.
I'm not sure anyone but Canon knows the true answer to you question. It appears the camera knows what lenses are attached and allows only a few lenses use face detect. I have the C100 Mkii and two of these 35mm macros as well as many other lenses. The 35mm Macro is not on Canon's approved list for face detect, but it does in fact work whereas no other prime does to my knowledge. The other lenses are APS-c zooms; and all of them STM's except I've heard the older non-STM 18-135 works in some cases. You will find the L-Glass and many non-STM lenses are fairly sloppy and noisy when focusing. You could see in Marcus's piece the EF 35mm and EF 50mm full frame L-series glass really struggled to hold focus. I'm not sure how much of that is the USM motors or the AF on the camera. I've heard face detect reverts back to contrast AF on the C100 Mkii instead of dual pixel; but I don't know if that is true or not. I will say after much testing, the face detect autofocus is slower and inferior to the center focus on the lenses I use. The optimist in me wants to answer your question by saying Canon knew the other lenses wouldn't perform well with face detect. The pessimist that Canon didn't want to lose sells of its then current EOS line that could use L-Glass and soon to be released better cameras with better implementations of AF and face detect. To add to the conspiracy, the Canon 70D had dual pixel and great much better face detect usable on any lens a year before the C100Mkii was released.
The only thing I don't understand is that I have the same lenses except for the STM that you debuted here, and I usually just turn off autofocus once I get the settings right. I mean I guess it depends on what kind of filming you're doing but if you're just standing in front of a camera for a documentary or a blog or something then you really just need the autofocus to get the specific range you want and then you turn it off. I do this because I use vintage lenses as well and this has always been my message. I wonder if anybody else uses the same method
I've used the Sigma 18-35 and Tokina 11-16 f2.8 (you said 11-20) with it and they both work good, but don't enable face detect. I find the Sigma a little slow on continuous AF if the talent is moving, but is superb for manual focus or when shooting stable/planned footage or when you have it adjusted with a little more DOF.
Hi Markus. Would love your opinion on the g7x iii. Everyone seems to hate this camera. But to me it looks like a winner. Compact, canon colors mic input.
I'm curious, but did you ever play around with the DJI Ronin 4D? It looks like it would be a lot of fun to run around with, but definitely not compact like you usually run with. But back on the video subject, I love my C100. I will be really sad if and whenever it finally dies on me one day. My 1DX MkII died on me this past weekend. Need to get the shutter fixed.
Hi- I love my C100 Mk II...but here's a question- if you are going to step to the side but stay in the shot, wouldn't you just turn off auto focus? I use the button in the front of the camera to quickly refocus and stay manual all the time.
@@MarkusPix that's a shame. Those little pancake lenses are really sharp. STM motors are a bit slow but hey... I only wish there were more lenses like that for the Canon world.
Hello! I have the Canon C100 with the dual pix auto focus. How does this work? You just put on the lens and have continuous focus on and the lens automatically follows your face? Or do you need to do anything? I can buy this lens used where I live. Seriously considering this after this video.
Hey Mark I’ve been thinking about checking out a c100 or c300 mk1 just because they are at a reasonable price. Now I’m no film maker I just enjoy checking out older cameras and camcorders. I have a few canon lenses that aren’t apart of the pro line of canon’s lenses. Do you think a mk1 c100 would be worth checking out?
Sorry, but it doesn’t. The 35mm Macro STM is the only prime lens the C100 facial tracking with function with. The other STM lenses are the variable zooms.
A bit off topic but I have a question. I do product reviews and I use a EOS R. To shoot from above looking down my 35mm is too tight. So I put on my 24mm - 240mm. It is still tight so my question is, if I shot with a 24mm prime, would that actually have a wider view or should I go for the 16mm which is a lot cheaper? I can't raise my camera higher by the way since the desk mount is already extended all the way up. Thanks for your time! By the way, I have issues with my 35mm prime not autofocusing when I am doing livestreams,,,kinda bites!
@MarkusPix my zoom just gets too narrow of a shot so was not sure if a shorter body (24mm prime) would get a wider shot since technically it wouldn't be as close to the subject. Anyway, thank you for your reply.
Great video. BTW, on a 24 inch monitor this video doesn't look that great. I think it's because of your export settings. It looks very pixelated. I would recommend you export to '4k youtube' preset if you're using premiere, then it would look awesome on TH-cam.
Markus, let me get this right. Are you saying, that I need to use the Canon 35 L series with the lens only? Or can I use any Canon camera. In my last comment I mentioned that I have the Canon T-3i. And I will use the lens with it. But I'm thinking (by watching this post over and over,) that I can't use the lens with any other Canon camera except the L series. Is that correct?
@@MarkusPix ...right. There's no such thing as a 'professional lens' or a 'consumer lens' outside a marketing blurb. The guy he purchased the house from was a high up in the military. It originally had a gun range in the bunker as well. I think he said it's like 3ft of concrete between the "basement" and upstairs.
It's a pity you upload videos in FHD, because compression is way better if C100m2 video is upscaled and uploaded as 4k! Maybe try this out, the difference is really there!
@ no, i mean that it seems youtube compresses FHD and 4k videos with different algorithms and you may see a noticable difference between footages, lets say A. a footage of c100m2 uploaded as FullHD, and B. the same footage upscaled to 4k in your software and uploaded this way. The difference is in how YT processes colour details specially in blacks and also detalisation in general. I watch videos on iMac which has huge screen, 5k resolution I believe. For sure I select the highest resolution by default so it is not the case. I encourage trying upscaling footage of C100m2 being upscaled, try this out and see if it makes sense in your case. By the way, thanks for your nice channel and videos you create! 🙂
However... if you are only stepping to the side, might as well use manual focus. As long as distance to camera remains the same, no need for autofocus. 🤫
Hey Markus Pix i am trying to win the giveaways by you but i didn't even won one. i want to start my TH-cam journey can you please give me a camera for this that'll be a great help.
side by side, the STM wins in my eyes. You just saved someone a TON of money with this comparison.

The guy he purchased the house from was a high up in the military. It originally had a gun range in the bunker as well. I think he said it's like 3ft of concrete between the "basement" and upstairs.
I miss the C100mkii everyday. As perfect as 1080p gets since it’s Dow sampled from the 4k sensor. And those tiny file sizes are absolutely glorious!
The stm really looks better than the L series.
It's a pity you upload videos in FHD, because compression is way better if C100m2 video is upscaled and uploaded as 4k! Maybe try this out, the difference is really there!
You probably know about this th-cam.com/users/shortsUon0mcQr8ms but the stuff looks pretty darn good on all my computers and laptops
Nice to know. Aloha
Ha! Wearing my fav shirt!
0:48 25 megabytes a second??
"i like things really fast" 😏😏😏
However... if you are only stepping to the side, might as well use manual focus. As long as distance to camera remains the same, no need for autofocus. 🤫
But I dont just step to the side, I step back and forward also.
Why was I unsubscribed? I don't remember unsubbing and I wouldn't do that either.
