Cormyr is the best. I once had a dragonborn cleric who came from cormyr and everyone thought it was weird that the dragonborn came from the land of the purple dragon.
Well it is weird.

I'll actually be able to test this line of thought in a couple months when a friend of mine will be running a homebrew game through Cormyr, and I'll be playing and Arcane Trickster.
There's a lore bungle with the "Purple Dragon" Thauglorimorgorus. Not by Jorphdan but by Wizards of the Coast.
Thauglorimorgorus was indeed a black dragon that had grown so old his scales had started to shine purple and his eyes morphed to purple too. This is why he was nicknamed the Purple Dragon. HOWEVER years later Wizards of the Coast officially dubbed Shadow Dragons as Purple Dragons. It became confusing for people who hadn't read the book Cormyr by Ed Greenwood or read any supplemental books explaining Thauglorimorgorus' true nature.
It was one of those many things that new editions and new creative teams naturally muddle.
I was introduced to Cormyr in the "Curse of the Azure Bonds" computer game when your party tries to kill the king.
Funny that my appreciation of Cormyr came from a Neverwinter Night DLC, where you played the part of a Purple Dragon Knight :)
I know I'm two years late to this comment, and I apologize for that, but Neverwinter Nights is arguably my favorite game of all time and I still play it regularly to this day. It's just cool to see people talk about it out in the wild, its like seeing a zebra in central station.😃
At some point, you have to make a video on the Vast Swamp that lies between Cormyr and Simbia. That place is an absolute nightmare of practically every high level baddie that can exist in the Forgotten Realms.
Thank you! I've been looking for a video about Cormyr for a month now! There's surprisingly little about it on TH-cam. My group is currently smack dab in the middle of the country en route to Westgate. They were quite taken aback to learn that they had to buy licenses to Adventure inside Cormyr's borders. All this additional info will give me lots more to play off of. I really appreciate it!
I'm playing a noble scion from Cormyr, and early in our campaign I convinced our party that we needed a guild charter and paperwork outlining our goals and how we'd handle loot and everything and now, almost a year later, I'm still getting backlash from it. But we have a guild charter and we are slowly being pushed into Cormyran(?) territory, so I'm just waiting for my "told you so" moment. :D
This is a great video! I love hearing your character ideas at the end of each video. If you ended up playing them all you would probably not ever eat drink or sleep! Can't wait until next Wednesday and Merry Christmas!

Thanks Jorphdan great video on Sembia. I love playing Intrigue and Spy games based on relations between Cormyr and Sembia, with the Dales always caught in the middle. In my game Cormyr has annexed daggerdale.

This was awesome! Returning DM here. I hadn't played since 2e AD&D, but here we are with 5e (only 10 years late), but I just dropped my party into the woods in Cormyr. There's so much to explore there!
Running a homebrew campaign in Cormyr! This video was a great starting point for my research, fantastic stuff
I'm planning on having my higher level adventuring party that's been slowly building power in Baldur's Gate to the point they've become as close to "nobility" as you can there, have to do a mission in Cormyr for the two main mage factions as part of a test to see if one of the party has what it takes to join a order of knights that's still in it's founding stages and is trying to represent themselves as worthy of having a guild there. I'm looking forward to the culture shock. Delicious moments like the sorceress finding out she's basically a loaded weapon that will be both respected and viewed as potentially hostile for simply existing. The rogue of the group who constantly complains about how corrupt Baldur's Gate is, discovering what a highly structured city that despises thieves is like to visit. The Paladin and Cleric learning what it's like to be in a city that cares little to nothing about their two gods. And the warrior? She's going to have to deal with having her weapons peace bonded, so that to draw her weapons she will be at risk of arrest. Plus having to register as an adventuring party, to be constantly stopped while traveling through the city to be questioned about their intent despite being summoned. Having to bow to every single noble they encounter, no matter how low status, and being viewed as inferior despite themselves being considered nobility where they come from, because of Baldur's Gate's reputation.
Oh yes, it's going to be good.
I had heard a very different story of the early history of Cormy, from the novels set there if I recall correctly.
The way I heard it the purple dragon was defeated in a feint of honor by an elven mage, back then the forests of Cormyr were a part of the great forest of Cormanthor. The would-be royal family was one of the early colonizers from Chondath. Foreseeing the growth of humanity in the region the mage who defeated the purple dragon searched for a family which would lead the chondathan settlers in a manner which would make them allies of Cormanthyr. The elves granted the land that became Cormyr to the Obarskyr family, and so they became by right of legal acquisition of the land royal family. Suzail was named for the first king's wife iirc.
Well i think i read that it was destroyed with a staff of wonders in its mouth by the obarskyr king or something like that, given by a coronal of Cormanthor, but i read it ages ago. Even then the first mage protector of Cormyr was there too.
I do recall there was a staff involved and considering the violent reaction it was probably a staff of the magi. I also remember there being ambiguity about whether the dragon was killed or just conceded the territory because it lost the duel. Obarskyr kings/queens were never magic users and the battle was definitely a high level magic user against the dragon. I also believe the battle happened a significant amount of time before the Obarskyr family settled in the region.
It is the tradition of alliance with the elves and the grant of the land from them to the Obarskyr family that makes Cormyr stand out from the other major chondathan colony turned nation in the area: Sembia. In Cormyr they showed some restraint in preserving forested areas but in Sembia they totally cleared the forests in a short-sighted manner that is a reflection of their commerce driven social structure. There is an interesting map comparison between the extent the Cormanthor forest in the years shortly before the fall of Myth Drannor and how much it was reduced by 2nd and 3rd edition as a result of the Sembians pushing north after the fall.
@@kurtweinstein8450 yeah u made me remember that part, but later the dragon awake from his slumber again in the early 300-600 DR and was really defeated by an Obarsky King, the mage and the staff i think.

Great video! I love Cormyr. I have a question. What happened to the steel Regent Alusair oberskyer? I know she's a ghost now but I can't figure out how she died.
Oh this is nice, tho i hoped for more. This is a treat but it far from the amount of stuff there is about Cormyr.
I recommend Cormyr Saga, Avatar's Crysis and the fight with the Tuigan Horde amongst the books to get more lore.

Another fantastic video. I'm going to have to do some research to figure out the ascension of the Royal family over the years. I'm quite confuses as to what has happened since the Time of Troubles and/or King Azoun IV's death during the Goblin Wars. I'm beginning a new campaign starting at DR1372 timeline and looking for cannon and useful materials. I'll check out the references you listed (prob have most) and would appreciate any additional tidbits you could offer. Again....solid presentation and I thoroughly enjoy what you produce for the hobby. CIAO !

So the purple dragon knights are named after fighting a really old black dragon? Man I'd love to see an /actual/ purple dragon, that weird crossbreed of a red and blue dragon who has the best stats of both, show up and do stuff around that kingdom. Can't tell whether it would be offended and try to show off how powerful a dragon with wizard levels and every scroll it can buy will be, or if the thing assumes it's being worshiped and expects these knights to bow down in awe.
I do believe there are purple dragons. They're like cave dragons that live in the Underdark.
Yep, two different kinds of purple dragons actually. One is an underdark creature that's basically just a cave dragon, focuses psionic powers instead of typical dragon stuff. The other is a cross-breed of red and blue dragons, which happens to have a blinding plasma beam for a breath weapon. Noted for being as physically strong as a red dragon, and tactically intelligent as a blue dragon, preferring to actually study as a wizard rather than rely on sorcerers power.

It's cool that setting specific classes are being made anyways.
Only as a archtype in 5e.
Lore wise they weren't bad. They got nearly extinted in their fights in a crusade against the Tuigan Horde (they win) and with a Red Dragon, Huge numbers of goblin armies and demons in the Cormyr Saga. So they recluted what they could and rebuilt Cormyr. They expand their Kingdom pretty good and are good at protecting their homeland from those pesky Zhentarim, Shadovars, Sembians and disruptive adventurers.
