      Your thoughts on Candle Keep being a entrance (exit too obviously...) to the upper, under & lower dark as well as a place to learn & be worthy concerning planar travel considering what can be found at the core of any star be it a planet, moon or star? ⛲

    I like to imagine that in one long-forgotten spot in Candlekeep, amidst the vast shelves of lore and esoterica, lies a book bound with an unnatural shimmer. On its cover is a depiction of some ancient, immortal, inhuman being of vile magics, and within its pages lie the secrets of the universe unraveled as a series of conditionals, tables and algorithms. Its contents drive mortals mad, as they were never meant for mortal minds to comprehend. Its title: "The Dungeon Master's Guide."

    Fun fact: Building a library right next to the sea is REALLY dumb. Especially without air conditioning. Moisture destroys books. And the shore is very moist.

    • @moiseman
      @moiseman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      I *think* this is a magical library in a magical world full of magical people able to magically affect the world. Somehow, I have the feeling they can deal with moisture.

      There is actually a subtle mythal that desalinates the air and repels water!

    • @drewforchic9083
      @drewforchic9083 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      There is actually explicitly an enchantment that covers the entire keep that keeps the air dry and salt free, along with the one that prevents fire from existing in the keep.

    • @davidthompson7744
      @davidthompson7744 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It has a mythal that keeps out moisture, pests, puts out fire, prevents mold (so strong that the people who live there have to go outside to eat cheese as it's a mold and the mythal destroies it). Also prevents teleporting in and scrying.
      That being said I'm pretty sure the mythal is gone as of the last Elminster novel.

    • @ns0557212
      @ns0557212 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chanter from the west so say the wise Alonso. Ya there are chanters from each side of the cardinal directions and in baldurs gate 1 you start off in candlekeep and can run into them all and they each have a specific kinda vague phrase that describes 1 of 4 of the major DnD events to come. Its on the wiki page but one talks about bhaal and basically bg2 and throne of bhaal the ending. I think the other is when dragons returned and another was the Time of Troubles. (BG1 takes place i think just like 90 years before the time of troubles when the gods walked the world as mortals.)

    • @sharkdentures3247

      Yeah, the Baldurs Gate Game is how I 1st heard of it too.
      But even then, I kept thinking . . . you build one of the top 5 repositories of knowledge on an oceanside cliff???? What is you're wisdom score? Three?

    • @LightStreak567
      @LightStreak567 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one about Bhaal is commonly heard. Here is another one: "In the Year of The Turret (1360 DR, eight years before the game) a great host will come from the east like a plague of locusts. So sayeth the wise Spain to." That prophecy references the Tuigan Horde invasion which was stopped by the king of Cormyr and his armies. That prophecy should be removed from their chant, but they still include it.

    There was a short story in one of the Realms novels about an initiate that found a secret room with a book of stories about candlekeep. After reading the book he was found out that the library has a guardian spirit that protects the books and that guardian spirit has to be renewed every so often and he had been selected. It was a good story, I wish I could remember more details.

    Thank you so much for breaking down the FR lore into bite size pieces. Your videos do a great and entertaining job of both educating longtime FR readers (I've owned the campaign setting in one form or another since 1993) and helping out newbies. I'm showing this and your other videos to my 12 year old son and his friends to get them more invested in the D&D game I'm running.

    Chanters are awesome there they each have an Easter egg/hint to the future to come. The chanter from the west so say the wise Alaundo. there are chanters from each side of the cardinal directions and in baldurs gate 1 you start off in candlekeep and can run into them all in the courtyard and they each have a specific mildly vague phrase that describes 1 of 4 of the major DnD events to come. Its on the wiki page but one talks about bhaal and basically bg2 and throne of bhaal the ending. I think the other is when dragons returned and another was the Time of Troubles. one of my most epic characters was rewarded for "betraying the party" by being given candlekeep. he was obsessed with knowledge and the preservation of that so justified it as keeping it safe from the war, and he did send a small army to help support the party later, wasn't evil, just had other priorities.

    So the biggest thing I don’t get is how the gate keepers know if a book is in the library or not. I doubt that every gate keeper knows all of the tens of thousands of books in this library.

    • @anthonyalexander8886
      @anthonyalexander8886 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would assume that the library has some sort of catalogue listing what books they already have. The monk would just need to find where the book would be on the list - and if it's not on the list, you can come in.

  • @mentalrebllion1270

    Recently I revealed my character regularly goes out and records flora and fauna of the world and brings sells their journals filled with that knowledge to the library as well as artifacts and other objects such as tablets to be kept there. Not directly part of the library but something of a contractor. Their sponsor is the one who gave them the bracers of archery that allows them to use a longbow and also why they have a bag of holding. My character is a scout rogue and just recently got out of a dungeon crawl among the ruins of a dwarven city that fell to fiends so long ago. They are returning to candlekeep the deliver some tablets and other items as well as their journal detailing the recent summoning of the fiend Baphomet and the activities of his cult there. The wizard from the party is going that same way for magic reasons and to research their own origins (the feywild). Our clerics are parting to deal with gathering various other clerics and paladins to deal with the remains of the cult.

    OH SNAP! This is it! This is just what I need for my Forgotten Realms character (Chaos Elemental Sorcerer mutant human named Aran, or at least his mother’s roots); while Aran’s father’s roots are intertwined with Abier, Amn, Maztica, and Bazim-Gorag, Aran’s mother’s roots are tied to Candlekeep, Waterdeep, and an “underground” group of scientists whose experiments result in mutants, and she was one of those mutants (one that gives her three eyes, perfect memory, and a rage-like state that allows her to use telekinesis) who escaped (one in Waterdeep), was taken in by one of the monks that guard Candlekeep (where she became a cleric), and returned to Waterdeep (after having a vision in her dream about facing her “past”), and (for those who’ve heard before) the rest is history
