Excellent if only they made things like this today, think of how much money to save
My grandparents use to have the gold set, too, until the washer stopped working. My grandpa had a service guy come out to look at it & told him he couldn't find the parts he needed or they don't make them any more (can't remember which one). @--harry_ Best thing to do is search for a washer that works like the old fashioned type. I think one of them is called Speed something..lol. I purchased Maytag, with an agitator, and I can set the amount of water I want going in; however, the agitator moves slow, takes forever for a load to wash and I never feel like they're clean. What a great old machine Eugene, That was when machines were built to last not like the junk that they have out today!!! Are you thinking about over hauling this machine like you did with machines in the past or is it just to old??? Thanks for the video Eugene and have a great day..... Bob
Yep! The same model my Mom had, but in Coral (pink). Those images brought back a lot of "touch memories" from all those familiar surfaces! Took me back home again!
Just started the video but I'm enjoying the rhythm of the agitator moving, the occasional ping/click, and the water splashing. Very relaxing. And the washer is really cute, i love the color.
I was still pulling these backbreakers out of basements around 2008. They were made with big, heavy concrete bricks in each corner to stabilize that high speed spin. We ended up tearing them apart in the basement to get those out before hauling out the pieces. Much easier on the back.
I was wondering why there wasn’t a spray rinse during the first spin cycle. I saw your explanation at the end of the video that the valves are bad. Overall, though, it didn’t look like the clothes were being circulated through the wash water by the agitator very much. I believe they call that the “turnover“ rate. When the turnover rate is small or nonexistent, the clothes really don’t get clean. Loading only three or four pairs of pants instead of five might’ve helped improve the turnover rate.
Wow!!! What a great video. I loved it. ❤❤❤❤❤ I actually saw how clean they were getting. The motor was so quiet and efficient. Much better than the junk of today. Thank you.

Growing up we had a washer just like this, although ours had a cup for fabric softener that was placed in the top of the agitator. As a kid I loved watching the clothes being pulled down by the agitator. Since the agitator would stop when the lid was opened, we had to put a rubber spatula in between the lid and the frame on the back right side where the button was to keep it agitating with the lid open.
I had to replace my 50 year old Maytag about 2 years ago. I looked for another mature Maytag or Kenmore for over a year. Purchased a Samsung that broke down after only three months. Next I purchase a COMMERCIAL-GRADE RESIDENTIAL AGITATOR WASHER. Simple to use and please with it for two years so far.❤
My mother had one she would repair it herself when it would break down it was like and amy mechine sad to say my mother passed away but that mechine is still to this day is still running i left it at her house when i sold it wish now that i should have taken it
I grew up with one exactly like this, right down to the neon control panel backlight. All the sounds brought back a tone of memories from when I was a kid 😊
My parents had a pink set bought in 62. It ran for 30 years with no problems. Then they bought an almond set Same thing 30 years no problems. I had an olive green set for 25 years. Now I have a white set.
We bought our Maytag washer new in 1986, it has that exact same turquoise center part, still works perfectly. The matching dryer had to be replaced 2 years ago. ☹️
@@connor_flanigan Ot gets a bit more complicated than that, especially in higher end models. A bad timer or switch can be the cause of problems and they're all no longer available. Sometimes parts can be found on Ebay although it's all about timing there.
There’s cycles on my machine I have no idea what they are for! Need to keep it simple. Wonder if a simple basic washer and dryer set built like this would be popular today? I’d buy it!
Those old machines use a lot of water compared to modern machines but they probably get clothes cleaner. I love that color. Screams late 50s early 60s.
Like the one we had, only ours was white. Haven't seen one in sooo long! Yep, that cascade of water rushing in is exactly how it was. It was located, along with its companion dryer, in the furthest corner of our basement, where the floor drain was. Our mother had a table situated between them with an array of powdered soaps and Amway products on top. Hadn't thought about that in years. We had a laundry chute, too, which was cool.
I just found this video and haven't even watched it yet and I know this machine cleans clothes way better than anything made today. This crap in my basement makes funny noises, the "energy saving " cycles take an eternity and it simply does not clean clothes well. There's nothing like the agitation of old school machines. This crap I own needed serviceing only after a few years. Pure garbage. The manufacturers knowingly mass produce high price garbage to sell to the public.
I have a brown one, a little older than that one, still runs like a champ, with tub light and face light that also work. Your's is missing the fabric softener cup that goes in the top of the agitator that mine also still has. That's when they made stuff that lasted. Until some company genius thought, "Hey, we aren't selling many replacement parts, make them junkier!" If you make something too good, eventually you'll run out of new machine buyers, because the older ones never quit. It's the same with everything, especially cars! 👍✌️
Just brought back some memories. Of the Henry Huggins book. When Ramona opened the Maytag during the rinse-spin cycle. And water went all over the place.😂
I love that I sat and watched this! Today’s washers and dryers SUCK!!!! My mom had a Maytag that literally lasted for decades. I bought a new Maytag and the sales guy said are you sure? They aren’t built like they used to. Boy was he right. I hate my washer and dryer. They do not use enough water to clean the clothes. I bought one with an agitator but the machine uses like zero water. This is a great video! Is it for sale?😂
You're right. When it's in the spin cycle, the cold water valve would open intermittently to rinse off any soap suds residue, except for the final spin. Our old Kenmore used to do that. Our old Kenmore also made a very loud relay switching sound when the motor shifted to high gear.
I am 66 years old. My grandmother had a wringer washer. My grandpa was trying to make things easier for her and bought her this same washer. Same color everything. She refused to use it. Just continued to use the old wringer with the tub to do her laundry. She did finally agree to a dryer during winter months only. Her clothes kept freezing out on the line…lol…. It when she passed away there in the garage was this old washer with the tags still on it and booklets still inside the drum, everything. Not sure what my grandpa did with it. Probably sold it.

Since the agitator would stop when the lid was opened, we had to put a rubber spatula in between the lid and the frame on the back right side where the button was to keep it agitating with the lid open.
Hmmmm but I must say that Spin Cycle stayed pretty steady 🎉I appreciate older Appliances
That color! 🩵
I know what is like to be a 1960s model and leak a little. Most things are fine and we're not too far gone.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 priceless!!!
I wonder what the other multiple problems are, looks and sounds like it’s functioning fine except maybe a little noise on spin. Awesome washer!
I still have my Sears and Robuck Kenmore washer and dryer from 1997 and they both are still working great!
We found a pink dryer in a farm hedgerow once on a hike. It was still beautiful
We bought our Maytag washer new in 1986, it has that exact same turquoise center part, still works perfectly. The matching dryer had to be replaced 2 years ago. ☹️
Should have fixed the dryer, they're crazy easy to repair.
@@muziklvr7776 there's nothing in a dryer other than a heating element, motor, belt, fan, a thermostat and some bearings under the drum.
@@connor_flanigan Ot gets a bit more complicated than that, especially in higher end models. A bad timer or switch can be the cause of problems and they're all no longer available. Sometimes parts can be found on Ebay although it's all about timing there.
Great machine. Love the sound of the timer.
There’s cycles on my machine I have no idea what they are for! Need to keep it simple. Wonder if a simple basic washer and dryer set built like this would be popular today? I’d buy it!
Simplistic, & durable... I passed on these models & ended up buying a set of slightly used 9900 series 25 years back... still run great.
Those old machines use a lot of water compared to modern machines but they probably get clothes cleaner. I love that color. Screams late 50s early 60s.
I would LOVE that just for the look!!
This washer and I both have something in common. We were both made in Newton, Iowa!
We had a 1962 Kenmore growing up. Worked perfectly and non-stop for decades. It's probably still working somewhere
just to think, in 50 years, my Speed Queen washer/dryer set will be 60 years old. I'll be 99.
I remember when they introduced the instant fill feature back in 1966. It was optional on the top of the line models. 😉
Just brought back some memories. Of the Henry Huggins book. When Ramona opened the Maytag during the rinse-spin cycle. And water went all over the place.😂
My aunt had a turquoise pair like this! In fact, the Smithsonian has a turquoise pair!
Good wash action
My mom only bought one name brand Washing Machine and it was Maytag. She had one just like it 😢
I wish they still made them beautiful like that I mean, that thing has some style
Hi Eugene. My mom had the same machine but in white. The clutch went on it first new. Love them old washers the turn over is great!😊
There no clutch on a 2 belt Maytag.
You're right. When it's in the spin cycle, the cold water valve would open intermittently to rinse off any soap suds residue, except for the final spin. Our old Kenmore used to do that. Our old Kenmore also made a very loud relay switching sound when the motor shifted to high gear.
American made quality built to last, unlike the foreign made trash today.
Cool the maytag still works😊
I am 66 years old. My grandmother had a wringer washer. My grandpa was trying to make things easier for her and bought her this same washer. Same color everything. She refused to use it. Just continued to use the old wringer with the tub to do her laundry. She did finally agree to a dryer during winter months only. Her clothes kept freezing out on the line…lol…. It when she passed away there in the garage was this old washer with the tags still on it and booklets still inside the drum, everything. Not sure what my grandpa did with it. Probably sold it.
Very relaxing sounds! Love the color
We had that exact same machine!!
