In this video I explore Catch me if you Can the movie that tells the story of Frank Abagnale and his five years of impersonating a lawyer, doctor, pilot and higschool teacher, while also forging and cashing in millions of dollars in checks. Frank’s story turned out to be an inspirational one as he redeemed himself and also turned out to be incredibly talented. In this video I discuss what I consider his strongest attribute, confidence. I discuss how confidence and overconfidence can help you achieve success, make money and get rich. How it is often seen in a negative way but how confidence and ego can actually be a positive.

The true definition of being smart is absolutely believing that you could learn, easily understand, memorize, and recall things that you study. If you repeatedly read something you would be able to memorize them.
Bar exam isnt about “intelligence”, its about remembering a lot of law and precedence, and utilizing an impressive amount of niche logic, that rarely is justified in everyday life...then again, if it were easy, we’d all be juris doctorates. But, you can be unsmart and still pass the bar...consider it highly specialized knowledge. Also, JDs dont do academic research, nor do they write dissertations...so...theres that. Its why few lawyers refer to themselves as “Doctor”, though, technically, they are...🤷🏽♂️
He also took it in a state where you could retake it again and again and again with no cap. He basically figured out the frequently asked question and eventually nailed it. They’ve since updated it.

Basically this story got the Hollywood treatment, not to mention that there was some doubt cast on the legitimacy of the more impressive claims as they were never confirmed. Not saying it never happened, but don't base your worth on an amped up, exaggerated story that even in its original form had some sort of doubt over it.

Fr in school before any exam I used to just sit and listen to people stress out about failing despite having studied enough and being prepared. Meanwhile I hardly studied for one exam in all of high school but I just never stressed once, and never doubted that I would get whatever mark I wanted and even if I didn’t get that mark it usually turned out fine for me and not so fine for them

Lol. Duh. But it does enable you to learn the skills necessary. Being a teacher isn't an especially specialised profession btw, most people are able to pass on things they know without much trouble.
All of my big career moves came as a result of faking my CV. The weird thing is, once you start doing something, you become an expert. There are so many jobs out there that nearly anyone could do, if they were only given a chance. But since no one gives you a chance, the only way in is to fake it.

People seek out affirmation so they can remain comfortable. People who lack confidence are often drawn to literature that talks about the virtue of controlling their ego because this isn't something they have a problem with. While it is true that controlling ego can be beneficial, the person who lacks self confidence needs to first focus on building an ego at all, before they should worry about over-correcting.

I seemed to lose confidence over the years, which may seem illogical. I was overconfident at 18, being unaware of my shortcomings. Getting knowledge, experience and skill I kept realizing how much more I have to learn. I have been humbled a couple of times down the road.
I guess one has to get to the point where they accept all about themselves, know their worth but also stay modest and grateful.

@@RodaRora Yeah but most women have an easier time relying on looks than most man. And men have a more innate ability to have more self confidence if they put in the time as woman do with looks. They can have both for both genders but I believe the point that is being made is that a man's confidence is similar to a woman's beauty in society, and it's role in attracting the opposite sex and gaining respect/praise from the same sex.
The detracting factor to that statement is that because of inhereted standards a good looking woman can often end up get stuck being viewed only as a good looking woman. A con man (or woman) can get way further than a woman with only pleasing shapes.
Of course the two are not mutually exclusive. Since beauty can be a real force multiplier for a con artist. Really, anything that distracts from the often obvious in hindsight flaws in the con will be used by an trade professional.
I actually inadvertently did something of a similar vein when I expressed so much casual confidence that people would start asking me for help on things I couldn't do. It wasn't even bragging, I would tell them I had no clue what was going on and they'd still ask for my assistance.
I realized that too. It's annoying when you get to a job and they have so much hope that you know how to do it, but you just don't. You just have to tell them that you don't know it yet, but you can learn.
I once had a boost of overconfidence during my job interview and I got it even though I must have been the worst for the job. :D Anyway I got fired two months later.

I remember a bit in A Scanner Darkly, the movie version, where they talk about con men. They modified it a bit from the book to be more current but it made me think about the art differently. In it they bring up a guy famous for being a con man (probably based on the exploits of Abigail). But his real con was hat he never actually was a con man. He just wanted the fame of being a con man. So he went around talking about the cons and scams and writing books about his adventures getting famous. A kind of double con. He got the fame and glory and attention without actually having to break all the laws and do all the damage that a real con artist had to do.
It really fits in a movie where a drug enforcer is so deep undercover that he is tasked with investigating the prime suspect... That is his own junkie alter ego, but since the system is so deeply set up to protect his identity he cannot reveal his conundrum to his superiors. A bit like if Batman is talking to Gordon about a case where all evidence points towards the culprit being Bruce Wayne. Batman has to investigate Bruce even though he knows fully well from the start that he did not do it.

I'm a nursing student and I had no idea what i was doing in the first few months. I was scared to try things, you know practical things and things didn't go well for me at the time.
1 year later when I was asked If I wanted to try something i've never done before... I said YES and did it impecably. I still have a lot to learn but trying to do some things without overthinking about the consequences goes a long way. Of course there needs to be a balance.

My mantra when interviewing for jobs was “Fake it till you make it”. I struggled with confidence, especially after my first interview. I still repeat it whenever I’m down or questioning myself. I think I’ve done a good job misleading people, including myself, about how capable I really am.
Indeed. I was able to get a better job than I've ever had because I realized about five minutes into the interview that I had nothing to lose. I didn't need the job, I was already employed in a job I liked. That (and God) gave me the confidence I needed to slam dunk the interview.
After seeing this movie, i used the techniques to get free things. Lets say it worked.

Real confidence comes from knowing who you are and having high moral standards and values and living it. The pseudo confidence that Frank had will ultimately catch up with you, make you unhappy and ultimately lead to disaster.

I was homeless at 16 and I did some things I am not proud of. I joined the Army and that got me on a better path. I am also smart but I never figured out how use it like Abagnale, I always just worked hard.

And of course nowadays there are so many systems in place to prevent fraud, use of false identity, and ensure you know what you're doing before you ever set foot in a place of work like an airline pilot, doctor, or lawyer, but its interesting to see the looser time of history not so long ago that gave rise to all these systems. The effort we have gone through trying to prevent another Frank Abagnale Jr. from happening again.

For myself I go for honesty instead. I balance doubt with confidence. I got my newest job by just being absolutely blunt in the interview. "Did you do any research about our company history" -"No" "Not even a look on the website?" -"Only the online store for customers. But that's basically it"
And when I was guided back out of the offices by one of them I took a deep breath, shook out my hands as if I just washed them and told the guy "I try not to be nervous during interviews, but sometimes they just get to me. I hope I didn't make an ass of me in there".
They liked how honest I am. I can hold it together when it counts and not lose my integrity. I even had the balls to tell them that I had a second interview scheduled for a different company.
Which seemed to send them into a little of a panic, because despite telling me they'd call me back within three days, they called that same evening, asking which place I liked better. And even then I still kept it blunt. I told them "The other feels more familial while your interview felt more professional. I don't have a favorite"
Damn I just realized I've been doing this in terms of my soccer ability. Future Ballon D'Or winner here btw

7:55 Humility is very useful for building your skills, but confidence is good for actually applying it. Your skillset doesn't speak for itself if nobody's watching, so sometimes you need to do that part yourself.
As a kid I read also about one called “the great imposter” (was also a movie starring Tony Curtis which was very good” and if I recall his name was something like Frank Denamara. This was way before Abignale. He also posed as a doctor and even operated, a prison warden, and many other professions. Very similar story so folks interested in Frank might check out the great imposter too!

Brilliant video. Extreme self-belief is key... knowing that you can handle the situation no matter what. Maybe that's a bit arrogant and egotistical, but it's also how the greatest leaders in history have accomplished things nobody else thought possible.
For another example of a highly confident guy who accomplished incredible things with his confidence, Jerry Weintraub's autobiography "When I Stop Talking You'll Know I'm Dead" is filled with gold nuggets on this.

it's not overconfidence, it is narcissism. the film does not describe the downsides and struggles of narcissistic people such as the lack of empathy, phases of incredibly deep depression, frequent existential fears over minor mistakes, and also destructive and unfair behavior.
do you mean lack of sympathy rather than lack of empathy? I feel like I can be fairly narcissistic, but I also seem to have high empathy. I actually read that some people have such high empathy that they become closed off to others (which I guess could present as narcissism) so as to not have to feel their pain.
I have to agree. And it's not like you're either narcissistic or not, personalities are a constellation map. From the movie he has a huge impression of his father. But I also have to say I think the movie does a great job. Frank struggles throughout, he starts out good at hiding it but slowly falls apart and slowly loses his game after his dad died, at least in the movie.

A mistake severe enough can actually cause me to spiral. One mistake after the other, a narcissist will literally break if the mistake is bad enough.

I'm just as honest as possible. I do have a certain skill set, but I suck at other things. I don't deny, or try to go around it, I embrace it. Many people will be suprised by your confidence to speak so freely about your shortcomings/flaws.
