Honestly don't know what all the negativity is about. Regardless of their internal issues, they both compliment each other beautifully, and frankly, I find Joy's movement and passion incredibly inspiring... NOT manipulative/annoying/unprofessional. It's obvious that they both put their souls into the music. Some of the most genuine music making I've ever seen.
Gotta love Civil Wars. Also I must say that these sound people or their equipment is astounding in the middle of a windy day in the open space... I think it even added something. That was amazing.
She is incredible. So is John Paul. They are so different but thats why they compliment each other so well. What they have in common is 'living in music' when they perform. I have never heard performances as intimate as theirs. It's like looking inside their little private world, which they gracefully allowed us to do for three amazing years. Two shooting stars indeed...
I clicked to 3:14 a billion times and finally caught what you meant! My guess is they just faked it here to have something to show, then played it in a quieter and less windy area LOL. They are amazing live, and they wouldn't fake it unless they really had too :). Great catch though :)
If that one mic and a bit of audio editing in post is all they are using, that is fascinating! 😱 I mean, The Civil Wars sound even better live already anyways, but that wind cancellation and still able to get that clean of a sound, unbelievable!
No miracle fix for the wind noise which is evident at the start, sadly. Once the performance starts the audio is 100% overdubbed; if you look closely at the performance you can see a few things that make it obvious, like how he manages to continue defined fingerpicking whilst brushing a strand of hair out of his eyes :P
Actually no, that audio is coming from that mic. How do I know? Because pay attention at the beginning when she grabs the falling mic. If the audio had been from that mic, you would have heard a big THUMP when she grabbed the mic stand. Thus the audio at the beginning had to be coming from the camera's built in mic. Having done field recordings in the past for film work I know that those fluffy wind screens work quite well. You can tell also that they did quite a bit of mastering to the recording on top of that. The NPR audio engineers are some of the best in the business. As for the parts out of sync, that has more to do with the video editing guy who got a bit sloppy. It's his job to sync the video cuts to the music. At any rate I'm also now extremely curious about what mic they used as they got a fantastic sound overall from it.
I have no idea whether it's just part of the performance, or whether she's really messing with him. Not my concern either way. They're artists; all I care about is their work. Their songs, and their performances of them, are phenomenal, and her stagecraft (if that's what it is) is part of it. I join everyone else in joy (as it were) at the prospect of their getting back together; terrible waste if they don't. Further deponent sayeth not.
Whenever I listen to their solo voices, I feel that there is one part genuinely missing as if it doesn't feel as complete as when they were singing together. Moreover, I miss the depth of their lyrics and the soul piercing quality in their solo songs.
Same. They may no longer believe it, but musically they complete each other. It’s like they become one full voice together. Praying one day they find a way back to each other. There’s no replacement for the music they made together.😭
Read the description on this video. Or check out their site/facebook. They're on hiatus :( I just saw them again last month and they seemed as happy as ever. So very sad.
tlcarbaugh nice catch! You'll notice that the series of notes in the seconds following are identical; they probably just dubbed that audio over the hitch.
you're probably right. If the temptations of the road were too much for the great Johnny Cash himself, these two didn't stand a chance.. but i'm just instigating lol. hopefully we'll find out what really happened soon!
I second that. That's one hell of a great sound they got from a single mic in a difficult field recording environment. It would be nice to hear from the audio engineers on such details as a big part of the art is in the audio recording and production.
what happened to the two to part their ways anyway? I just now heard of them couple of days ago and have been watching their videos they have made together. I know its dumb question
That moment you realize its a lip sung performance. =[ 3:15 (guitar continues playing as Paul scratches his beard) and 4:00 (when Joy stops lip syncing but the "you" is held out.)
It's not lip synced. That audio is coming from that mic. You can tell also that they did quite a bit of mastering to the recording on top of that using filters judging from the background noise. The NPR audio engineers are some of the best in the business. As for the parts out of sync, that has more to do with the video editing guy who got a bit sloppy. It's his job to sync the video cuts to the music.
it's not lip sung. lol it's multiple takes. the editor probably just used a different shot from a different take. they probably just used the best audio and best video
So, obviously the wind was an issue that day. Where was the audio actually recorded? Because his fingerpicking continues while he is scratching his beard around 3:17.
tlcarbaugh Man, that sucks. I was incredible impressed with this recording (still am) and that mic, but what you pointed out means they most likely recorded a separate time and edited it in in post production. Still awesome, just less of an awesome mic and editing haha
I'm pretty sure it is just the record label saying the broke up. Looks like she is about to have a baby in this, so they leak some shoddy info to get hype up. Really. she is just giving birth and hanging with her baby.
I hate it when I find a great band, fall in love with their music, and then find out they broke up before I heard about them.
Oh no... This must be my story too now
Check out this band called The Beatles
I just heard of this awesome singer Amy Winehouse!!!!
THEY DID??
I love them so much. Ugh please make up and bring back this beautiful music yall!! Quit playing
Honestly don't know what all the negativity is about. absolutely!!
People always underestimate female musicians and try to undermine them.
She has an amazing voice and together they're gold
Gotta love Civil Wars. Also I must say that these sound people or their equipment is astounding in the middle of a windy day in the open space... I think it even added something. That was amazing.
I love how the wind accompanies them on this performance. Nice job sound engineers!
...and the way Joy keeps the microphone stand still with her foot :D
Excellent production! Great location, great job with audio.Their voices give me shivers!
I am so in love with joy williams! So lovely. Such a good singer.
whiskeybeerbeer new music monday!!!!
Ashley Goodwin really??!??! details! Gimme! and ty!
she posted on her facebook. new song tomorrow! pretty excited. shes been working on it for a while now.
She always makes me smile when she sings, it does not matter what is.
thanks Ashley.

liked before i even watched the video. With the Civil Wars, you KNOW its gonna be an amazing show
The descriptions written for these videos are terrific.
Amazing what a wind screen will do for a mic. Wonderful recording!
Her baby bump is so cute!
Hope they can work things out. Their voices are so good together. I would love to hear some new music from them.
i love them SO MUCH. THEY CANNOT BREAK UP. "IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES OF AMBITION" my ASS.
Oh my god, the sophomore project can't come soon enough! If this song is any kind of indication, we are in for a hella-treat!!
So much chemistry.
Well, just in the singing!
Beautiful as usual...So sad to read about their separation...
Love the description for this video. So true. And we'll written.
I clicked to 3:14 a billion times and finally caught what you meant! My guess is they just faked it here to have something to show, then played it in a quieter and less windy area LOL. They are amazing live, and they wouldn't fake it unless they really had too :). Great catch though :)
I will never understand why they stopped making music together.
My first time seeing this...Amazing!!! Such stark beauty!!!
Funny you said that. Cuz in the thumbnail i thought it was Jon Snow and someone. Lol
I love this video! I know ..............it's over they're done......just sad
Que lindoo *.* me perco vendo esses dois..

this song reflects their relationship atm. i hope they work out their issues, because i can't handle it :(
My goodness, I have been WAITING for this recording.
Oh God,I think I'm in love for Joy's voice.
this is amazing...so much feeling in it, beautiful. liking the band
They blend vocally so well. Maybe if Christ comes back, he will come back as a couple.
yay, they're in my state! They always sound amazing....love Kingdom Come
They're incredible.
amazing. the fact that she's pregnant makes it 100x more beautiful.
Very very nice! What a neat moment...
I have no idea whether it's just part of the performance, or whether she's really messing with him.

Oh my heart is still breaking over this...I just can't understand what could have gone wrong...I hope they work it out, though
Wonderful song ! Thanks.

They're working on a new album right now! Should be released late this summer.
Cannot get this song out of my mind.
Yes, what 32459 said.
Thanks for posting that!
Read the description on this video. Or check out their site/facebook. They're on hiatus :( I just saw them again last month and they seemed as happy as ever. So very sad.
Omg I hope they don't breakup!they are TOO good together.no guys say it aint so!:c
OMG, so glad I found NPR Music! Finally no freakin AUTOTUNE!!! Lets kill it and keep it dead!
I agree with you. Autotune is useless. A tool for the weak.
Why do people have to find issues it’s just beautiful.
I know, it's such a good song and the intro with her laugh...
just goes to show you the absolute fragility of beauty.
90,000 views? Pretty amazing.
She’s tiny!!!! Oh how i miss thee TCW 💔
They're not breaking up. Joy said recently they were in the studio listening to some of the new stuff.
The world needs you
Very good and this is live
The whole time I was thinking, "That's a BIG ASS mic."
Just here to say again how mad I am they stopped making music
Does anyone else get really jealous watching them perform?
That guy REALLY wants to be Johnny Depp! Joy Williams is a jewel...
She is so damn enchanting. I am enchanted.
Sediments are chunks of rock or other materials eroded by water and wind. Sentiments is probably the word your looking for.
Great and Wonderful.
I LOVE IT.
sasquatch fest was in may and joy had her baby boy in june, didn't she? I hope these two work things out!
tlcarbaugh nice catch! You'll notice that the series of notes in the seconds following are identical; they probably just dubbed that audio over the hitch.
thats a cool looking capo...
great performance.
beautiful
thanks :)
Such a cute video and song :3
wow, amazing.
The stabilization makes it nauseating but good audio nonetheless.
you're probably right. If the temptations of the road were too much for the great Johnny Cash himself, these two didn't stand a chance.. but i'm just instigating lol. hopefully we'll find out what really happened soon!
NPR Music Could you tell us something about the recording equipment???
I second that. That's one hell of a great sound they got from a single mic in a difficult field recording environment. It would be nice to hear from the audio engineers on such details as a big part of the art is in the audio recording and production.
3 OF A PERFECT PAIR -gilpin 8-8-16
Love
Great! What the mic was used? Many thanks.
what happened to the two to part their ways anyway?

+QR21 lol
aww man...
Well spotted! I didn't wonder how they made the wind so quiet.
It's not lip synced. That audio is coming from that mic. How do I know? Because pay attention at the beginning when she grabs the falling mic. Almost, but still legal.
Read the description
Is that audio actually coming just from that one mic?? I figure they must be waring lavaliers or something, right? Opinions?
I love these guys...maybe after the baby is older perhaps they'll reconcile.
Did the tiny desk concerts replace the field recordings?
MUSCLE SHOALS THE MOVIE IS GOING TO THEATERS. SEE THE TRAILER ON OUR PAGE!
I guess I might be a bit naive here. Is the audio from a different recording? Or how can they record such clear audio in these conditions?
I wish I lived in George, Washington
...well it definitely was over soon. That is a fact.
it's a real shame about their recent possible break up.
So, obviously the wind was an issue that day. Where was the audio actually recorded? Because his fingerpicking continues while he is scratching his beard around 3:17.
*raised hand and raised three finger salute*
;)
Anybody else notice at around 3:17 he reaches up to take hair out of his mouth, yet the music continues? Just curious...
tlcarbaugh Man, that sucks. I was incredible impressed with this recording (still am) and that mic, but what you pointed out means they most likely recorded a separate time and edited it in in post production. Still awesome, just less of an awesome mic and editing haha
why comment?, they were great, now they're gone.
cant wait to go back to Sasquatch...
I love the BABY belly!
It's almost 2021 and I'm still hoping for a reconciliation.....Joy is now divorced so maybe that will help things a bit?
Dude, no reason to get so mad
cool what's it called
That baby will either love or hate guitar
Who is this? Matt & Kim?
Sadly, this seems right to me. What a shame.
I'm pretty sure it is just the record label saying the broke up. Looks like she is about to have a baby in this, so they leak some shoddy info to get hype up. Really. she is just giving birth and hanging with her baby.
oops.
@@DanielBoonelight Indeed. RIP!!!
That baby is lucky...
If you are referring to her then that isn't his baby.
Well I need a cigarette. Anyone else?
wait! They arent a couple~!? Thats....heartbraking
