  • Sailed my 1996 Catalina 28 from my home dock to the Florida Keys reaching the farthest point of Boot Key on Marathon Florida (210 NM straight line distance from my home dock). 22 days at sea. 17 days on anchor and 5 on a dock. Total distance traveled 550 Nautical Miles. 135 hours total underway with 68 hours running the engine ( 42 hours of engine use on the North-South offshore runs). Always the smallest boat in the anchorage but the perfect boat for me to make this mostly solo journey. Gerry Douglas designed a incredibly capable sailboat in the Catalina 28. My boat ran perfect the entire trip with almost no issues.

That was SO Awesome! I felt like I was there. Sure wish I had been. It brought back so many good memories of our trip in BVI. Tell the chicken lady we say Hi. Miss you guys!

It was a great trip. Looks like I will be going back to work soon so no more long sailing trips for a while. The BVI trip was great, last trip before the virus. Great to hear from you, take care.

Awesome sailing and good helmsman! Is your boat have a wing or fin keel? Contemplating on what would be best up here in the pacific northwest.

She is a wing keel. 3500# ballast. Draft is only 3'9" which is great for the skinny water in Florida and the Bahamas. Good luck on your search.

Hope to retire in Clearwater and sail a Catalina 28 the FL west coast, but worried difficult with a prosthetic leg.

Hope you can join the Catalina 28 owners. The wing keel version is great for these skinny Florida waters. Cheers

Looks like a great trip. Curious about your ground tackle? I have a 28' O'day with a 25lb Mantus, 15' of chain, 150' rode. I havent used it yet and I'm hoping its adequate for cruising?

    • @Supergeek0123

I also have the 25lb Mantus. It replaced a 15lb bruce. I have 30 feet of 1/4 G4 Chain and 150' of Nylon 8 strand rode. It has worked excellent in the Bahamas and the Keys. Its great ground tackle. My 3 days on the hook in No name harbor I was short scoped 5:1 and it held without issues in 30+ knot winds. Good Choice-Highly recommended

@@Supergeek0123 Thats great news. I did regret not getting my boat length in chain, but it sounds like I should be good and I have a strong second anchor with chain. Thanks a lot!

Hello from Campbell River BC Canada....I just came across you video.....Good job....I'm considering heading for Florida so I can enjoy the sailing there but I need to seek out a boat and get it in the shape that I want. My wife and I set out 30 yrs ago to sail the Bahamas but never made it. The dream never faded and I'm going to get it done this yr. Can I ask how you like your 28' Catalina? That is the boat that is at the top of my list to buy. I could buy a blue water boat but I don't think I need it for the Bahamas. Any feed back on the boat or a similar size boat would be great. Thx so much. Trev

I really like my Catalina 28 but it does have its limitations. I bought it to primarily day sail in the river with an occasional overnight and it is perfect for that role. I have also obviously taken her to the Bahamas and the Keys. For the keys trip also great as she is easy to manage single hand. When you get in the ocean the lack of displacement shows and technically she is only rated offshore B category not A. When I have time to make longer trips I will get a bigger boat for all the obvious reasons, interior space, comfort at sea, tankage, room for stores and equipment. My boat is basically outfitted like any other larger boat it is just missing the space you get and the comfort at sea from having more displacement. I am obviously a fan of Catalina yachts but if I was going to buy for an extended Bahamas trip depending on budget I would get a Catalina 35, 36, 32 or 34 in that order. If budget is an issue a really good Catalina 30 would also work. Although the 28 has more features than a 30 and is more of a modern boat design. That all said I will take my boat back to the Bahamas maybe next year for 3-4 weeks. The key is my boat has a smaller weather window than a larger boat. As the saying goes you can take any boat in the right conditions. On an extended cruise you don't always have that option. Its part of the additional challenge of having a smaller boat but the 3'9" draft allows me to anchor where others cant and it is kind of fun always being the smallest boat in the anchorage. Cheers Good Luck
