    Thank you. It felt extemporaneous but was a very clear and thorough description of your stuff. I’m curious about water makers. I’d have thought you’d want one for extended sailing. Since it wasn’t included, I’m curious if the power requirements overshadowed the weight reductions by not having to sore so much water. Nice setup. I’m very impressed!

    • @Supergeek0123
      @Supergeek0123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      People have done crazier things but I would not do an Atlantic crossing with her. She is not built for that mission. The smallest Catalina I would make an Atlantic Crossing is probably a Catalina 36 and there are several that have circumnavigated in Catalina 42's. Still she is a great boat for the Bahamas and the Keys which are my cruising grounds.

      I own the MKI version and sail Lake Huron. I was caught in THREE consecutive thunderstorms 15 miles offshore last year. I swear my 28 shrank to 8’ in those waves! We both survived the huge (to me) waves but I cannot imagine being caught offshore on an ocean passage with such a small boat. The worse the weather, the smaller your boat seems.

    Great content, very informative. Just a question: where were your winches and other outside gear stolen from? A marina, at anchor or on the hard? Any tips on how to prevent this from happening?

    • @Supergeek0123
      @Supergeek0123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This happened at my previous marina. I am pretty sure it was an inside job, someone who worked there. They had seen me working on the boat for weeks and the cabin was full of rigging, tools and gear. They also took my marine spares kit full of stainless hardware and did actually a good job removing the winches with minimal damage. They obviously had a marine background. I was the only boat that was burglarized. There were also no cameras there. My new marina has cameras and I also have someone living aboard two slips down. Having someone there is a huge deterrent. I do not keep any of the big expensive gear on the boat anymore. I also have some motion activated hidden cameras now. Obviously I moved my boat out of my previous marina within a week. Hope you never have to experience it.

    Hello from Campbell River BC Canada....I just came across you video.....Good job....I'm considering heading for Florida so I can enjoy the sailing there but I need to seek out a boat and get it in the shape that I want. My wife and I set out 30 yrs ago to sail the Bahamas but never made it. The dream never faded and I'm going to get it done this yr. Can I ask how you like your 28' Catalina? That is the boat that is at the top of my list to buy. I could buy a blue water boat but I don't think I need it for the Bahamas. Any feed back on the boat or a similar size boat would be great. Thx so much. Trev

    • @Supergeek0123
      @Supergeek0123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really like my Catalina 28 but it does have its limitations. I bought it to primarily day sail in the river with an occasional overnight and it is perfect for that role. I have also obviously taken her to the Bahamas and the Keys. For the keys trip also great as she is easy to manage single hand. When you get in the ocean the lack of displacement shows and technically she is only rated offshore B category not A. When I have time to make longer trips I will get a bigger boat for all the obvious reasons, interior space, comfort at sea, tankage, room for stores and equipment. My boat is basically outfitted like any other larger boat it is just missing the space you get and the comfort at sea from having more displacement. I am obviously a fan of Catalina yachts but if I was going to buy for an extended Bahamas trip depending on budget I would get a Catalina 35, 36, 32 or 34 in that order. If budget is an issue a really good Catalina 30 would also work. Although the 28 has more features than a 30 and is more of a modern boat design. That all said I will take my boat back to the Bahamas maybe next year for 3-4 weeks. The key is my boat has a smaller weather window than a larger boat. As the saying goes you can take any boat in the right conditions. On an extended cruise you don't always have that option. Its part of the additional challenge of having a smaller boat but the 3'9" draft allows me to anchor where others cant and it is kind of fun always being the smallest boat in the anchorage. Cheers Good Luck

    Question what year is your 28 ? Would you feel comfortable with this Catalina's ability to sail all the West Indies and Cuba? What are your thoughts on extended cruising on this model?

    • @Supergeek0123
      @Supergeek0123 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a 1996. The first year of the MK2 model. This boat is a coastal cruising boat. It is great for its intended mission but for extended cruising I think you would want a boat with more displacement. Larger Catalina boats 32+ would be better suited. It is a great boat and I plan on a longer trip to the Bahamas, I would like to make it as far as Hope Town but its offshore capability is limited by its displacement and design. Every boat is a compromise. This boat suits me for now it is great for river sailing and an occasional night spent out on the hook. When I plan on sailing farther than the Bahamas I will get a larger boat for the mission both for space, range and seaworthiness.

      The C28 is a great boat and very capable. I looked at several C-30's when this boat came up for sale locally. This boat has much better ergonomics and modern features. Another ton or two of displacement would be nice for ocean work but the shallow draft is a huge advantage in the Bahamas. Even so only took water in the cockpit once on the Gulf Stream crossing. Cant see the swell at night a little spooky but this boat handled it with no issues.
