    I must tell you, I'm a PhD and I teach financial economics in higher ed. Your presentation to these students was fantastic! I'm not kidding that I was on the edge of my seat listening to you explain your love of farming, from the heart. That just might be why I have subscribed to your site and look forward to everything you provide all of us. For the last several months you have enlightened me. Please keep up the great videos that help me understand the various "how-tos"... listening to you makes me wish (sometimes) that I had taken a different path!

      Kazak Thranduil when a farmer makes money so does everyone else in a farming community. Ever notice in a good year farmers will buy new equipment or new vehicles. They'll spend money on older equipment. They'll build new sheds or do repairs on existing buildings. They drive the economy in rural America.

    I've watched many of your videos by now but this is the first time I've written a comment. I've literally become hooked on watching you. I'm retired but get to "play" part time helping a couple of farmers down here in southwestern Missouri. I get to do all sorts of different things from tilling the soil to planting to driving 18 wheelers to helping with harvest and operating grain carts to haying also. The only thing I don't do is run the combine because the last combine I operated back in the 80's on my family's farm only had a 15 foot platform header. These nowadays are just too big! I enjoy immensely your day to day commentary, your interaction with Jim, your dad, your wife and children and especially your interaction with your dogs. You're not only very informative about your HUGE operation but at the same time very funny and entertaining. Your grain handling system is out of this world!!

    Regarding weather/yield correlation, my old meteorology professor used to say that "agriculture is half agrotechnicks, and the other half is God-o-Technics", and with every approaching storm those words tend to ominously bounce on my mind. But, if one wants to be a farmer, one MUST be an irreparable optimist! Great video, keep up the good work!

    I was born on a little farm in Ireland. I went to an ag college ( pallicekinroy co limerick) back in the80ies. I also became a wood joiner and a cabinet maker wood worker carpenter I came to Newyork in1988 after a few year I got into the union in Manhattan ( lu 608- lu 157) now I work in a hospital as a j1 carpenter. Lovely little job. When I talk with my 3 brothers and 2sisters we reminisce about the lovely life stile of the old farm knowing what I have learnt I should have got back into farming here in the great USA 🇺🇸. Farming is not for the week it’s at difficult job with little financial gains but an incredible since of satisfaction. I really do miss the land. There is no greater feeling than the excitement of the first day of harvest and the last day of harvest. I miss the feeling and the smell of the ground after the plow open the ground upon the birds that followed the plow. Here is another thing I totally miss a cow calving poring a little water into the new born calf and watch him become aware of its new world. Oh the first cut of silage freshly cut hay turning the hay baling and storing away. No money in this enterprise however incredible welth

    Absolutely fantastic presentation, easy to understand, useful, well-rounded, interesting. In a way it's surprising to hear only a few students are from farm families there. But, I guess why not, since so few people anywhere are involved with farming.

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice talk. It's great to have young people involved in agriculture. I think unless you grow up on a family farm these days that becoming a farmer is increasingly unrealistic for most people because of the huge costs. A first generation farmer now would have to be a millionaire to just get started.

    It's great to see someone educating the younger generation on how & where their food comes from. I think there is a disconnect between agriculture & the consumers about farming. As an example my nephew is in college & there was a bunch of students talking about their favorite foods & one girl said her favorite meat was bacon. That's great I love bacon too. But later in the conversation my nephew was telling about how his Dad was a pork producer. She said that she didn't like pork. She didn't even know that bacon was pork. She didn't even know what a pig looked like. My nephew had a decal of a pig on his back window & she didn't even know that it was a pig. So I think we need more education like this so people know where there food comes from & what it takes to produce it. Thank you.

    Financially land access is a huge hurdle to overcome in farming. The equipment alone can exceed the cost of the land. That's why it's extremely difficult for new Farmers to get into it and be profitable so as to guarantee the future. "A wise man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
