The amazing Olli Soikkeli fuses Gypsy picking with his own formidable pure alternate approach. And within that pure alternate approach he blends several different movements including pickslanting and the blazing crosspicking motion he uses for his adaptation of the Brazilian choro "Alumiando" at the intro to this clip. Some people get all the technique, and it's just not fair! We're finishing up editing Olli's interview now, and should have it up soon for Cracking the Code subscribers.
Right, right, right
Yea, yea, yea.
lol
typical soviet dictator mentality ...
Left, left, left
Killin'! His tone is what really got me. That's the real deal.
I knew this guy looked familiar I was hooked on the *Minor Swing* cover he did with his band called Rhythm Future Quartet, if you haven't listened to this one you should go and give it a listen, it's amazing!
Bruh I was thinking the same thing thanks for the info 😂
Olli is an incredible guitarist. The first time i heard Rhythm Future Quartet i absolutely loved it. I was lucky enough to see them live and actually get to meet Olli. i was blown away with their musicianship. He's a really nice guy too
I love gypsy jazz, this guy is awesome
Olli is a killer player, and one that picked up his technique insanely fast. IMHO, it's especially interesting to analyze the "natural" guys, who just seem to make it work with less hours than some of us have had to put in. Go Olli!! And thank yoy Troy!
OMG, it doesn't get much cleaner and smoother than Olli! In just 3 minutes he solved a couple questions I had about gypsy picking! Lucky for us, he speaks flawless English, too. Thanks, Troy!
Sweet minor 6th chords! This guys phrasing is amazing!
Troy - as usual, PHENOMENAL. Glad to see Olli featured! Any chance you plan on doing a Paul Gilbert feature? His alternate picking technique and attack are literally the pinnacle/gold standard. His “code” is one that definitely deserves “cracking!”
Psh, they're just typical. No magic there.
jspartacus fucking idiot
👍👍Best picking ever! His clean tremolo mixed with insane lightning melodic lines, and swinging hard with no accompaniment! Find him a Crown, for he is the picking King!
I am currently on a monthly plan. Love the materiual. This guy and Josho make it totally worth it for me.
It's a blast seeing more Finnish players on this channel!
He plays with the rhythm future quartet, there's a video of them doing minor swing that is incredible
Always cool to see more Finnish guitarists on Cracking The Code!
Troy you are doing a great job!!!
Dat smile while shredding the hell out of the guitar!!!! :)
Not only does he play amazingly articulated stuff....he also answers in triads...:)
This alternate picking sounds so laborious
Yes! I can't wait for this!!
Beautiful sound
amazing interview
You should totally try if possible to get Pat Metheny on here he’s got a very interesting style of picking.
...if possible :D
I know its abouut technigue, but it's Badassery.! Just popped into my head.
awsome speed!
“Right right right”
Nothing like that pure archtop tone !
Hyvä Olli!
Awesome!!!
Oli is an absolute genius!
Nate Coterel He taught himself off TH-cam I heard. Nuts.
Mate if that's true, the appreciate grows even deeper!
what are you talking about Troy? I did start dancing and light a cigarette.
OMG amazing
The more i study this subject, the more I see ANATOMICAL differences in player's hands and fingers, that change EVERYTHING about how to hold and move a pick back and forth...the angles and movement HAVE to be different because of these anatomical differences.
For sure, everyone's hands are a little different. However, these differences are not usually enough to force different people to use different picking motions, or to radically change the way that basic movements work. As an example, simple picking motion like wrist deviation can be used by anyone, regardless of hand size or shape, or finger size or shape. This is important because many people operate under the misconception that certain motions will not work for them. But we have not found any evidence of that yet. Most of the time, when a person has trouble, the issue is that they are simply not doing the motion correctly.
Phenomenal lad
this dude is a monster
Idk who have more picking tecniques the fussion guitar players or the gyspy guitar players
Lel traco// watch Michael Paouris, maybe not your cup of tea, but the guy is superfast with a pick
YOU NEED TO DO A VIDEO FOR JIMMY BELL FROM “house of lords” HE WILL BLOW YOU AWAY!!!
TORILLA TAVATAAN
Is this mainly 9o2 wrist movement for the Crosspicking or is there some forearm rotation in there as well?
Which kind of pick does he use? Dunlop Jazz lll?
looks like Wegen big city

Sweet! Is there more this segment on your website?
We're still wrapping up editing on this, and we'll probably have it out at some point in the next month.
Future rhythm quartets cover of minor swing is unparalleled
In the pocket always...beyond the "shred" we hear from alot of today's guitar players.
Where do you keep finding these guys, man...
Finland of course!
whats the piece he's playing in the beginning?
Miksen oo kuullu tästä kaverista aiemmin?😂
What pick is he using?? I only find small picks 😩😩😩😩
I could be way off on this, but it looks exactly like the pick I have been using:
www.etsy.com/listing/473393687/katchin-composite-plectrum-select-your
The Wizard Ergo sharp model. They're super pricey though.
@@Returnality looks more like a Wegen Big City to me
Take a shot every time he says right see how long you last
Lol, Troy!
can you invite Gus G ?
2:18 wtf his hands
No gypsy jazzer does only gypsy picking. Even django. It's understood to be a convention to achieve the tone and rhythm, but a rule to be broken. Stochelo does stay very close to pure tho. Hella downstrokes
For sure, but Ollie goes a little beyond. There is “non traditional” like Bireli, and then there is the movement we’re seeing in slow motion here which is a straight up bluegrass-style crosspicking technique. In the interview Olli talks about meeting Stochelo who was surprised he could even get a sound that way.
If you watch the one video of Django he actually is fairly religiously following gypsy picking.
Paul McEvoy Not completely, tho, and that’s the ONLY video we have. That was my point. So just saying it’s not so rigid as you’d think.
The Crosspicking looks very similar to how Martin Miller does it.
Similar end result! Mechanically thought I think Olli is more wrist/forearm, whereas Martin is more wrist/fingers.
Troy Grady Yeah, Martin’s finger motion is uncanny!
But the pick grip they use and the forearm rotation + wrist blend is mainly what I was seeing that was similar initially.
Guthrie Govan neeext Troy!!
need to get antoine boyer on here D:
Ryan Henry big time!
Abducción Steve Vai en TH-cam
Paul Gilbert
Awesome, but Joscho Stephen is INSANE.
