"Why the steep angle?" | SR20 in D21 - Subscriber Q&A

- One of my subscribers asked, "Why does it always look like SR20 swaps have a weird angle in the hardbodies? It looks like the SR sits at a steeper angle then the KA. Just curious as to why. Also, what are the mounting options when using the stock hardbody KA transmission with the SR bellhousing swap?"
Well Justin, hopefully I can answer some of these questions by giving you, and other folks, a visual representation as to why it appears that way. You are always going to have an angle. However, if you're wanting to match the factory angle that the KA normally sits at, you are going to have to invest time and/or money in a few extra parts to get the job done right.
Note: In this video I am referring to an SR swap where you are swapping your SR20 bellhousing onto the factory D21 KA24 transmission and keeping the transmission mounting points in the same location while using the factory driveshaft. If you are going to be running a different transmission, such as a Z32 trans, or a CD009 you can disregard some of this information. You will be building custom mounts and acquiring a custom driveshaft and have the ability to shift the engine around a little more for fitment.
I just bought a 1986 Nissan hardbody off my uncle, he just had the motor rebuilt with new pistons, piston rings, rods, bearings etc! It’s also the motor that comes with 8 spark plugs and the motor has less than 100 miles on it and it runs really good! Has working power steering and good air conditioning! But I would love to do an sr20det swap on it eventually
I always go with custom swaybars with splined adjustable end links and custom steering linkage in cases like this
Good little vid man. Very informative and straight to the point. So First thing on my list is a rear sump pan ✅
If you are trying to mate the SR bellhousing to your stock KA trans in the truck, then yes, it's a good idea. Let me spend the money on the kit first and see how the fitment is before you spend your money. I want to find the right pan for the swap.
Inner Sanctum Im trying to do whatever you’re doing lol. I’ll definitely wait to see what you come up with
When I was looking to do an SR in mine, I was looking at the CX racing pan for a Miata or a Datsun 510. I'll also add that a stock miata 1.8 oil pan clears our steering and sway bars pretty nice, so if CX racing builds their SR-miata swap pan similar in dimensions to a stock 1.8 miata pan, that'd be a pretty close bet. I got pretty far into a 1.8 miata swap in my d21 before I pulled it out for my VH swap that's going in.
Right on! That’s good to know.
Good video and information about the swaps by any chance would you sell the motor mounts you build when it’s all said and done
Jose Mondragon of course. I will be sure to build/assemble a full swap kit with all the stuff that works when it’s all said and done.
Inner Sanctum sounds good can’t wait👌
Are the automatic ka24e transmission bell housing the same as a sr20de or sr20det with a automatic? I know most run manuals but was just curious.
The KA, SR, CA, and RB20 have completely different bolt patterns on the back of their respective blocks. Even though these engines share similar/same transmission internals and similar/same rear transmission casings (except D21 & D22; shorter rear cases), they will all need a bellhousing swap before interchangeability can occur. Regardless of manual or automatic.
Hello Friend how are you I needed to know which transmission I should use, I have an SR20 that does not have a transmission and here in Chile the original SR20 is very expensive and I need to know what transmission works for that engine apart from the original or if the original transmission of the D21 truck can be used, for installation in a rear-wheel drive vehicle greetings from Chile friend excellent project, any information will help bye bye
Could you link the cx racing oil that will work for the hardbody. And will I have to make custom mounts using the stock transmission from the hardbody?
Did you have any issues with your SR being too high in your 240sx? I can only get one motor mount to bottom out in the cradle and cannot reattach my transmission because the motor is too high. Please help. I'm using Duralast OEM motor mounts
I was using Nismo CA18DET engine mounts and trans mount with my S14 SR in my 180sx. I didn’t have an issue at all. Sorry you’re having trouble man. Since you said Duralast, I’m assuming you’re running KA24DE mounts. Those are considerably taller than CA18 mounts. That may be your issue. You can run CA and SR mounts on KA’s, but it’s harder to run KA mounts on SR/CA’s. They are different despite sites that say they fit multiple applications. CA18DET are the “shortest” of the mounts. KA are the “tallest” of the mounts. However, they all bolt up. Hope this helps.
