He’s the secret villain of the story. He sabotaged humanity’s attempts to fend off the visitors because he believed that the black gas turning people into monsters or enhancing them was solid eugenics.

I wish there would be more DLCs in the game, very nicely done, would've wished the dialogues were more complete, but overall, it's a very good run.
