Purposelessness | Does Life Have Meaning?

  • There is a difference between having a purpose and acting out of purposelessness.
Acting out of purposelessness is an act of spontaneity. Behavior that isn’t goal-directed is often seen as genuine. We’ve all seen that little boy who acts funny without the goal of being funny. When he finds out that people are laughing about his behavior, he repeats it. But now it’s considerably less funny because it’s not spontaneous anymore. It’s goal-oriented. The kid’s goal is to get attention.
An act of out of purposelessness is quite unique and possesses a magic of its own. It’s novel, unpredictable, and coming from a place of uncalculated spontaneity. There’s no anticipation for a reward, validation or to impress anybody. It’s a form of doing which comes from the innate drive of pure pointlessness.
This video explores purposelessness. Does life have meaning?

I would like to make a note to the producers of this channel.
Doing something that you dont really care about can sometimes reach and touch the most susceptible among us. There is a line is this video i challenge any of you to find. It is misread in a way only AI could misread it. Im assuming this video was read by some program, when it would not have taken much effort to do it yourself. Knowing thay, rhis video is a parity of itself and should not be taken seriously. Especially, since the topic is juvenile at best. Imagine telling your children that for many years you found life to purposeless.. They might respond by looking around at the garbage ridden streets and the homeless everywhere, and say. "i know you did."
We are grown adults, and if anyone doesn't find purpose in providing a better future for our children. Then maybe you are purposeless.

@jay this channel is not for you! It's something beyond your imagination :D

@@malikatique I agree it isn't for me. However, my point still stands. All the philosophy in the history of the world begs an answer to only one question. "What about me?"
      Socrates - self examination
      Descartes - I think therefore I am.
      Nietzsche - Nihilism
Always, me, me, me, my perception, and how others perceive me.
If you look around, in politics, economy, and even charity it becomes very clear that most people are only thinking of themselves.
That is why when people think of their lives as purposeless, it is simply because the never considered other people's lives and how they could help.

This is mindblowing. You described so well what life is and what we are supposed to do with our lives- nothing. We don't need to strive to become something, we already are it. Besides, no one really told us that we need to achieve a certain thing, we set those goals for ourselves because the mind never stops wishing for something that's not here in this moment.

  • @alexsandoval796
    @alexsandoval796 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This concept dances too close to nihilism for me. Can people strive too much for a frivolous or shallow goal? Sure, happens all the time. Is there something for being in the moment rather than stuck in the past or future? Of course, that happens all the time as well. This purposelessness seems too much like giving up on meaning to me. Meaning is the only thing that makes the suffering bearable and with purpose. A life of suffering with out meaning is pure hell. It has the all too real ability to turn perfectly sane people suicidal or homicidal against life itself in acting as judge, jury, and executioner because you see no meaning in it all but no matter how you look at it you can't think your pain away.

something came to my mind when watching this
"having something found is an end goal, looking is a process"
if we focus on the end goal, we worry, if we do the process, we know we have done what we can.
At least that's what is coming to my mind

I think I got it! I think we can have both! So a goal to lose 50 pounds may be needed to be successful. But if my goal is to find love, I need to go about that purposelessness...just being. I’ve not been trying hard enough to lose the weight, but have been trying to hard to find love. They need to be switched!
Some some things we desire need to be goal orientated, others, we need to just take a breath and follow where the path takes us.
    Thanks!!

I love the spontaneity of the middle path, but it can be hard to get that natural flow. A very good book for anyone who wants to look into this Taoist idea more and wants a fun start: The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. As a person who watched Winnie the Pooh as a child this was wholesome af; connecting the wisdom of Pooh with that of Lao Tzu . I think theres an audio version on youtube even if thats your preferred medium like it is for me.

I found meaning out of a lifetime of madness, addiction, and dependency on people place things. Now I see how I can help people after 3 major life in mistakes choices in almost 20 years. The need to understand my previous poor unhealthy choices had me striving to want to help myself which in turn helped others. If I fall behind or go back to my selfish wants I always get sent back to my path. These mistakes had me looking at my ego and seeing how I can shed these failings. Last 3 years to last 6 months have been progressively better.

the truth is life in general has no meaning but living does that's why we cling to life so desperately because we know through instinct that when we die it is the end everything you see now is just vanity it only has meaning when where alive to enjoy it.....all your experiences, everything you've worked so hard to achieve will all seem meaning less when your about to draw your last breath ...so live your life fully when your alive so when you are about to die you welcome the cold embrace of the rigid hands of death ....because in all fairness everything in the universe will eventually die making everything completely meaningless......it is best to think of life as a GTA game that when your wasted you stay that way

@Einzelganger in Hinduism existence is said to be the Leela of God. Which is compared to a small child's play you can not force anyone to watch a movie if he doesn't want to watching a movie is purposeless so we enjoy it a child's play is purposeless he doesn't even know that he is enjoying it or not he just plays without any reason.

Your channel has much valuable, thought-provoking material - but in this one, the conclusion you reached is deeply flawed. It could also be considered dangerous, in case it's inspiring people to stay purposeless. A purposeless life is usually not rich as you claimed at the end. It is often filled with anxiety and unhappiness, ultimately leading to depression and huge regrets. A sense of purpose is what drives most people to live and thrive.
