  • Knowing what fertilizer to use is incredibly important when it comes to growing a garden. Whether it’s fertilizer for flowers, vegetables or simply just vines knowing what balance of N-P-K you need is very important! Gardening in Canada goes though the best way to read fertilizer labels in this video.
    Then we dive a bit deeper into what each deficiency would look like if it appeared in your plants. We also discuss what Fertilizer is best for flowering plants. What Fertilizer is best for vegetables that have fruits like tomatoes and peppers. What fertilizer is best for plants that just grow green foliage such as vines and everything in between.
    Thank you SO MUCH for watching gardening in Canada! Canadian gardener or simply a gardeners wanting to learn more about the science of gardening this is the place for you!

      Hey thanks, finally found out what's happening with my pepper plants ! Seems to be a slight potassium defiency. I was wondering if that burnt look on the edges of the olders leaves was due to a bacterial or fungal infection, but it seems more likely to be due to a nutrient deficiency now that I think about it ! It's growing in a container in a substrate that's mostly coco coir and peat. I haven't really fertilized it either until today because I didn't have anything but epsom salt on hand due to the lockdown. Something that haven't been addressed in the video though, what would a calcium or magnesium deficiency look like in a pepper or tomato plant - or any solanaceae for that matters - ?

      Dimitri Berenger yea! So that’s an awesome question and will be apart of future videos in the soil fertility series. I’m giving it its own video because the whole idea of cal-mag deficiency in peppers and tomatoes specifically is a huge topic! Thanks for the suggestion it helps me know I’m on the right track!

    What I love about your videos is that you talk about silly soil which is what I have. Most clips I watch only ever talk about sandy or clay problems, never about how to deal with silt or how silt affects things like micronutrients or watering. And for the record, with the science in this clip, Mr. Pepper should have been Dr. Pepper.

    Wow, Ashley, thanks for literally showing us what are plants are trying to tell us. Now I know that the discoloration on some of my tomato plant leaves is potassium deficiency. But exactly how is the best way to deliver potassium to my plants without it running through the soil or gassing out? How do I know how much to use of whatever I'm supposed to use? Now that you've taught me how to identify, please recommend something to treat. I should say that every 7-10 days I use Miracle Gro Tomato Food for all vegetables - the water soluble one. I mix it into water according to the directions. Thank you!

    So what's a simple plan for houseplants? I don't think most people will get 3 different fertilizers. Would I be better off to get a 10/10/10 and either fertilize if I see any deficiency, or not fertilize if I see indication of over fertilization? Is 20/20/20 generally better? Your video has good info, but I'm not sure what to do with it.

It responded to cal-mag in the past, but that doesn't seem to be helping much now. I replanted, put it on a pole, and added some worm castings. After that it had a nice growth spurt and put out a lot of new leaves, but they are still very small.

    • @GardeningInCanada
      @GardeningInCanada  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you are deficient in out the soil is probably deficient in all three. The reason being they are all removed and move through the soil profile with similar mechanisms. So it’s unlikely to over fertilize, the nutrients aren’t the issue is the salts in the fertilizer that’s the problem when over fertilizing. However, you can get specific nutrient fertilizers in a commercial setting. In a conventional garden setting this is a lot more difficult to get your hands on.

    Wow, thanks for the vid! (It's @rootedinhamont btw 👋) I really enjoyed the explanation- I also have Scultz (All purpose/Cacti and Orchid). Do these fertilizers supplement Sulfur? Also, I just watched your vid on 'soil enhancers' and I just bought Liqui-dirt. Not sure if you're familiar, but it definitely doesn't have an values on the packaging. Does this mean you think this doesn't add value to the plants micronutrients, if they need them at all? (I didn't quite understand the takeaway if potted houseplants would indeed benefit from anything past NPK). Thanks again for sharing this content. So glad to finally have found someone who actually uses facts and science. 👩🏻‍🔬📊🙏
    -Szandra

    • @GardeningInCanada
      @GardeningInCanada  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! And there is sulphur in the Shultz mix. I’ve never heard of the liquid dirt before but they need to have values bottom line. Without them the company risks killing peoples plants & environmental damage. So that means either the product has zero or very little nutrient wise because they would need to be below the threshold that it is required to then be regulated by the USDA or the Canadian Ag.
      Indoor plants need all the same nutrients as outdoor plants but because they aren’t as “hungry” (due to less then ideal conditions and therefore slow growth) its best to top dressing with a manure or compost to get the micronutrient profile you’re looking for.
      I’ll be going into this in a bit more depth this week on Instagram but I’ll also be releasing a video on here going over everything.

      @@GardeningInCanada Okay, yay! Perhaps it might be helpful to explain the different kinds of compost/manures available? (I know it might sound obvious, but I have a feeling other new plant parents would appreciate as well) Sepcifically, ones that you might find more suitable for indoor potted plants- aka if they smell and how much lol. I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but just like with beneficials (I hopped one the predatory mite train) I think there is a mental hump to get over, if that makes sense!

    I keep thinking you're going to produce a mediocre video sooner or later, and I'm still waiting on the first one! You should change your channel name to "Gardening Anywhere". Your channel is the greatest.

    I use liquid fertilizer. How can I prevén or try to conserve the nitrogen by the roots with liquid fertilizer so I don’t have to out and buy slow release and use up what I have? Maybe a little leca at the bottom?

      Some will stay it suspension a little bit I wouldn’t worry about that too much,

    Are there other causes for leaves turning yellow and falling off besides nitrogen deficiency? It's happening to my pepper seedlings (esp Chinense and Baccatum peppers) even though I've been fertilizing them once a week (1/2 tsp of 24-8-16 in 3-4L of water).

      Could be a watering issues as well. I find under and over watering causes similar issues

      @@GardeningInCanada Alright, well hopefully my plants recover now that the soil is less moist. Other people have suggested it might be overwatering too.
