In the context They’re questioning him about his decision, and why he isn’t following - the law of Abraham - and he rebuttals in this poetic allegorical parable. Stating before Abrahams law - Was Gods Law -

The Jews asked Jesus about Abraham, and how did he know him when Abraham lived a long time ago? Jesus answered that God existed even before Abraham. and he doesn't have to live in Abraham's time, because God is eternal, and he told his prophet Jesus about Abraham.
Jesus in the same story says :
John 8:54-55
Though you do not know him (god), I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.
