Thanks. Another great review. I'm hanging onto my Pontus II 12th-1 DAC coupled with the Hermes DDC but was curious about all the rage over the flavor of the month in the Harmony LAiV. Nice DAC. What really impresses me is the modular design making it easy to upgrade or replace faulty parts. If not for the Denafrips gear I have, I may have looked at Harmany when I was searching for a DAC. In fact, it was your Pontus review that steered me in Denafrips direction. Thanks.
Very nice review! I like the fact that you are honest and you don t give easily the outstanding performance. According to your review I bought my new amplifier EXPOSURE 3510 (of course I know that you gave the outstanding performance to the smaller 2510 model but I found it new and in a price I couldn t resist). And I was blown away and I'm very happy with it. It pairs very well with my QX4 MISSION floorstanding speakers and my CHORD MOJO as a DAC ( again here I followed what you did in the past using MOJO in your main system). I would like to see you review GUSTARD A26 and how it compares with R26 or even propably the more flagship brother X30.
Fantastic review Tarun! Love the remote and the screen that can be seen from across the room on the LiAV! I have: Netgear Modem(LPS)>LHY Network Switch SW8>Roon server (LPS)>Volumio Rivo Streamer (LPS)>USB>Iris>I²S >Pontus. It sounds like I am at or near your Venus in sound quality. I always LOVE listening to my system! THANKS for this!!!
The most insightful and trustworthy review to me. I would like to see a review of an analogue preamp within 500-1.000€ range. Whichever you consider worth.
Ok, here we go. This puts it to rest. The hype has been reckoned. The Laiv is on par with the Pontus II. It’s not a Venus or Terminator beater. We can all calm down now. Thank you, Tarun, for your balanced, level headed, excellent reviews as always.
I have the Laiv and had the Pontus II, the Laiv sound is warner and weightier, when I first turn it own I had to adjust the sub because the bass was really prominent. The user experience is much better than the Pontus, particularly I2S matching was a so much easier. However it's not a super amazing giant killer, it's just a great DAC that can hold it own and many will be happy with. One area I find the Laiv is very good at is oversampling TH-cam and Spotify crappy quality into something that sound lossless and warm.
Thanks for the review. To answer your question I suggest the new Holo Audio Cyan2 DAC. If you can it would be helpful if you could also include the Holo Red streamer and DDC in the review. They look to be a good match and for about $2200 US combined they are in a very competitive market. Rock on!
Thanks Tarun, this DAC is quite attractive and makes it even more difficult to decide where to put your money for the next upgrade! As for product reviews I wonder if you would be interested in reviewing Thomas' Galion TS A75 Power Amp.
Thanks, Tarun, for yet another objective, informative & comprehensive review of this seemingly - going by the plethora of TH-cam hi-fi reviews - *latest, greatest & untouchable at this price'* DAC. I really appreciated this very fair, balanced, detailed & matter-of-fact review - (100% hyperbole-free...) - Thanks! +++ My suggestion for a new Hi-Fi product would be the PS Audio FR-5 Bookshelf speakers +++ All the very best to you & your family, as always, from presently, very hot & humid Japan.
@@abritishaudiophile7314 the primary difference is that they replaced the clocks with what appears to be the same TCXO used in the Iris, Arce, and Venus along with adding a port to allow for remote control (albeit the remote is sold separately and can’t find if it’s available yet). Denafrips have stated that with the clock and chip upgrades that the 15th performs on the previous Pontus level now
Thank you for this review video. This was on my radar, but I couldn't get past the other reviewers gushing about the product bling casing, the packaging and particularly when talking about how good the remote control is. I could understand if there was a preamp option, but there's not, so I don't really know what the benefit of having an expensive remote in the package is here. Thank you for discussing the sound quality and not the feet, the feet template, the cardboard packaging, and the fancy remote. Ps - I bought a L2 Spring 3 with the preamp module.

If I cant hear in my own home, having you describe its sound is the next best thing! Thanks for another informative and enjoyable review, much appreciated.
Hi Tarun. Great review as always, thanks for that. Regarding available slots for reviews… have you ever considered to do a review about the Audiolab 8300 MB monos? I know mono’s are for even more niche group of people than “standard audiophiles”, but I’m surprised why this product never really reviewed by hifi reviewers even if the amp itself is a probably slightly higher level than the kind of raved Audiolab 9000 series. I would really appreciate it if you think that this one worth a review. I have one pair and I’m in love with them, but weird how this amp is under the radar somehow. All the best! Regards, Att
I think there would be a lot of interest in your review of the *Geshelli Labs Dayzee* DAC. It is a fully balanced design with two AKM 4499/4191 chipsets, and 8 single op-amps. The stock TI OPA1655 op-amps are in DIP8 sockets, so they can be rolled - and there are the 6 pin socket used by the Sparkos SS2590, so these can be used (with the DIP8 sockets empty, of course). The Dayzee is ~$1200US in the acrylic case, or $1300US in a wood/aluminum case. And carved wood cases are an option. In my opinion, the Dayzee is a stunningly great DAC. I use an LPS, and I listened for about 3 months with the stock TI OPA1655 op-amps - and I could have just stayed with them; as they are incredible. Sparkos had a 25% off sale, so I got the eight SS2590 for ~$360 - and all the qualities of the Dayzee got even better! Soundstage and layering "forever" is the hallmark - as is bass and midrange quality and dynamics. Everything is "effortless" and open - with the utmost clarity bottom to top that I have *ever* heard.
I don't doubt that Geshelli makes good DACs, but their products already have a disadvantage when being bought by consumers in Europe because of added VAT and other potential charges, as they have to be bought directly from the US.
Great review, I currently use the Eversolo DMP-A8 with the Galion TS120SE. I really want to try an R2R DAC instead of the A8's AKM. I am considering the LAIV with I2S. Wonder if that would be a big change in sound?
I was furious when suddenly a bunch of youtubers went hyping literally on the same week, almost the same day. Finally somebody with a review which can be at least thought to be authentic. Of course still very subjective as always but that's OK. I'd love to see youtubers doing volume (voltage) matching with a multimeter or at least mentioning they do it as it's vital. Extra congrats for checking all inputs! My dream review at this point would be R26 vs X30 vs D2R vs HUGO TT2 vs VENUS (vs Laiv but we kinda have that already). And I find it very important to gather information about the pre-amp/volume control when there's one as it can significantly effect the sound quality. SMSL is advertising high quality volume control for it's flagship VMV P2 amp but turns out it's actually a cheapo solution, anything but high quality. I fear they have the same in the D2R. And I'm still waiting for the Kinki EX-M7 review, would have been nice to compare with Thallo or Apollo. All easy to get from Alvin :)
Hi Tarun I was considering this before I watched your review. Your review are always informative and entertaining. My problem now is which other DAC to consider? The Laiv was going to be feed by my Marantz 30n coax input to the Laiv, then to the Hegel H190 to the Kef Ls50's. Should I consider the tried and true Gustard r26? please keep up the good work you were made for this! Paul
Thank you for this review and describing it against other similar DAC's to give us a perspective on it's performance. I have the Venus II/Hermes combo so I was curious if this was a better DAC. As you describe, it is not. In the USA the Venus II was about $3000 USD and the LAiV is $2750 so not far apart. Thank you for this review, it cleared up my questions completely.
Good info and explaining the audio quality difference between the optical, coaxial digital and USB outputs when going into the DAC. I was planning to get Laiv Harmony DAC and use my Cambridge MXN10 as a transport but the cambride MXN10 only have optical and coaxial digital outputs, I would need to spend much more on a better streamer transport with USB output, I think for around $3k USD the Auralic Vega S1 with psu might be a better choice?? But then again I only stream through Tidal and Tidal currently does not support DSD so using either optical or coaxial digital is not an issue in terms of sound quality so I might still give the Laiv Harmony DAC a try since they offer 30 days return.
Recently discovered your channel and I really like your content and specially your precision in details and descriptions. Because our rooms and our speakers are introducing the highest amount of distortion into the reproduction process from the sources to our ears I would be very curious to see a review by you on minidsp SHD that has a streamer, preamp, dac and digital sound processing , subwoofer integration and room correction. I am more and more convinced that such an investment, a subwoofer and the DSP device costing around 3000 euros can actually achieve much better results than a 10.000+ euro high quality streamer + DAC. Planning to build a new system with this approach. Thanks for your solid advices.
Nice technical review as always. Love the comment up new DAC’s appearing more rapidly now. Seemingly more quickly than the old nuclear arms race of years gone bye. Fine delivery by you. Cheers😊
Excellent review ! I recently purchased [5 months ago] the Denafrips Ares 12th, and I haven't looked back.. yet. As far as other equipment to review, I don't think you've reviewed any speakers from Canton, the German company. They seem to have a great selection of highly appraised speaker series, either the Vento or the Reference series. regards!
If I may suggest, please review one of these: 1. Linear Tube Audio: microZOTL product (pre-, power- or integrated amp) 2. Rouge Audio: RP-9 Preamplifier or Cronus Magnum III integrated amp 3. Electrocompaniet: ECI 6 MKII integrated amplifier
Hi Tarun. Thanks great review as always. Regarding a product recommendation to review I would personally ask the monoblock from Audiolab the 8300MB's. I'm a little bit surprised that most of the integrated amps from Audiolab are loved and raved by reviewers (mainly 6000 and 9000), but their monoblock pairs are not even reviewed properly from nearly anybody. I know monoblocks are even more niche than ourselves audiophiles, but I think is a great power amp, compare to it's price level. If you can consider to review it that would be great!
Again, another deeply discerning and comprehensive review. Thank you for considering usability and how that can impact sq relative to the rest of the system. I was wondering how inputs would differ and you put all of that into the mix. Much of this not really covered by anyone else 🙏🏼👌🏼 And, can’t remember if you’ve covered anything from GoldNote? Particularly their more affordable line.
Very well said, thank you for your efforts!! I greatly appreciate when you compare it honestly to other devices. It is my experience as well, some reviewers i cant here anymore concerning the next killer-dac and NOT telling the truth: its much closer in our days, beacuse so many dac chips and especially transport are much better than 5y ago (much more competition!)! I 100% agree, what so many dac-chaser forget: transport is soooo important and their lies the real digital-tricks and dac-tuning!
Would like to see you review the entry level Holo Cyan 2 I just got one based on the reviews and it suits me Simple R2R NOS with no filters or features and based on trickle down technology of Holo’s more expensive DACs I think your review of the LAiV Harmony is excellent when considering all the reviews I have seen which may be overly enthusiastic For DACs I put priority on three reviewers, you, Hans, and iiWi Hans seemed closest to you in his assessment which was reasoned and not overly exuberant It was Hans’ review of the Cyan 2 that motivated me to try it out Excellent content as always
Thank you for an insightful review. The attention to the various inputs ads a worthy perspectives that helps to assess its suitability for our set ups. In terms of reviews, I would be interested in a comparison between moderm amplifyers ( Hegel) vs heritage brands (Mcintosh) at similar price points
It's worth mentioning that the Gustards LAN input is a significant uptick on all of the other inputs. I use the LAN input exclusively in NOS mode and it sounds fantastic. You didn't mention if there was any burn in time on the Laiv?
Same here, I use my R26 via LAN as an endpoint from Roon. The NOS mode is great. I messed with upsampling/headroom for a while and got better results than the OS modes. Just have to remember to switch it back to OS when I can be bothered to put a CD on.
Great review as always - thank you! I just ordered a Gustard X30 to replace my Pontus II 12th so it would be really interesting to hear your thoughts about the X30.
Would love to see the KEF Reference 1 Meta reviewed and compared to some of your favorite speakers that costs are equal to or more expensive. Great reviews as always. Thanks.
Thanks for the review, your intro hit the nail on the head. "And you are back on chapter one...". For instance; it is august, and you go for the Laiv Harmony. And yes, there she is: the Pontus 3 (15th), very close to your Venus 2. This has to be the dac for the month september. Better ands cheaper, who can resist that ? But still, I like to see your opnion on the Singxer SDA-Pro 2. It didn´t got much attention, It deserves better, I think,
Well done Review and Video Tarun. This is a total joy to view and follow. I wonder about those spiked feet. Like Hans, they are are not my preference. Hans did swap in Stack Audio isolators for the spikes. However, he did not comment upon how much of a difference they alone made vs the spikes. I understand a preference to review gear as it ships. Is it possible the spiked footers have a greater negative impact upon the S/PDIF Coaxial connection vs. the I2S connection? Perhaps vibrations have more effect upon a combined data stream? Cheers.
Very elegant and stylish, but limited inputs will turn me away. Tarun, would be great if you’d review the ATC SCM20 towers, not new, but have yet to see a decent review of them online. Thanks and keep up the awesome work

Thanks.
@@sygnus2164 thanks. The Pontus is a a great DAC 😊
Another great review Tarun. What about a review of some Magnepan speakers please. Thank you
@@Firebottleman thank you. I hope to at some point 😊
@@Paris-gi9un thank you. I appreciate you sharing your experiences 😊👍

Ok, here we go. This puts it to rest. The hype has been reckoned. The Laiv is on par with the Pontus II. It’s not a Venus or Terminator beater. We can all calm down now. Thank you, Tarun, for your balanced, level headed, excellent reviews as always.
The pontus 15th may beat the harmony dac. Just be a bit patience..

@@carlesjuliavallmajo3812 I appreciate the suggestions 😊
Yes, I totally support your suggestion. 2 seemingly very promising products for this year
Yay fresh review
I hope you enjoyed it 😊
I have the Laiv and had the Pontus II, the Laiv sound is warner and weightier, when I first turn it own I had to adjust the sub because the bass was really prominent.
Thx for sharing your experiences 😊
Thanks for the review. To answer your question I suggest the new Holo Audio Cyan2 DAC. If you can it would be helpful if you could also include the Holo Red streamer and DDC in the review. They look to be a good match and for about $2200 US combined they are in a very competitive market. Rock on!
Thx. Cyan has been requested for review 😊
Thanks Tarun, this DAC is quite attractive and makes it even more difficult to decide where to put your money for the next upgrade! As for product reviews I wonder if you would be interested in reviewing Thomas' Galion TS A75 Power Amp.

@@abritishaudiophile7314 the primary difference is that they replaced the clocks with what appears to be the same TCXO used in the Iris, Arce, and Venus along with adding a port to allow for remote control (albeit the remote is sold separately and can’t find if it’s available yet).

Thanks for this review, I was very interested to hear your views.
@@akaudio-jz8fd thank you. I appreciate the suggestion 😊👍
@@NeilBlanchard thanks for sharing Neil. I appreciate the suggestion. I am not sure if Geshelli Labs ships to the U.K. 😊
@@abritishaudiophile7314 I will check with them, about whether they can ship to you, or not.

Great review, I currently use the Eversolo DMP-A8 with the Galion TS120SE. I really want to try an R2R DAC instead of the A8's AKM. I am considering the LAIV with I2S. Wonder if that would be a big change in sound?
@@d1giachino thank you. The Laiv is not as precise but richer sounding than the DMP-A8’s DAC 😊
Please review Holo audio cyan 2. Thx for your great videos, i trust your opinions on gear.

The Vega S1 is exceptional for the money 😊
@@FMN024 Thank you. I am yet to hear a DSP based system that produce subtle timbre naturally but I keep an open mind 😊

Cheers.
