  • I've always been curious about Okami. I've seen many people praise the Okami soundtrack, which doesn't surprise me since it's a Capcom game. Now more than ever, after listening to The Sun Rises theme, I really want to play this game!

The character you play as in Okami is actually the goddess of the sun Amaterasu, so the name of the track, The Sun Rises, actually has a nice double meaning there. As you said it is very uplifting and hopeful for the future, but it also alludes to Amaterasu reawakening to her power. The track perfectly represents how Amaterasu inspires hope in the people that believe in her, and how she guides them to a brighter tomorrow.

Yeah this is pretty much Okami's equivalent to Proof of a Hero. It involves some leitmotifs strewn across the game.
Very notable though, and of course easy to miss if you haven't heard more of the soundtrack, is how right-out-the-gate *intense* this track is compared to most others in the game.
It's unceasing harmonious noise underneath serene and evocatively positive melodies, as if trying to reflect the overwhelming splendour of the sun.

The Sun Rises, for all intents and purposes, is a victory lap. You fight the ultimate evil and bounce back full-force from rock-bottom. It's thoroughly empowering and incredibly hopeful, what a rush. The ultimate evil can be defeated, and everyone has placed their faith in you.

Okami is the game on which I spent my oral baccalaureate at the end of the year (I am French), it is a game that I discovered a long time ago but it inspired me so much, that today I cannot forget it. This game made me draw, evolve and appreciate Japanese art.. I would never thank capcom for making a collaboration between two games that I love and that made me grow.. Today, the music of Okami still have as much impact on me.

Honestly if you have the time, you should definitely play Okami! IT may be a bit old, but thanks to art style andthe uniqueness with the brush techniques, it still hold up VERY well imo by today's standards. And there is so much good music in there too, especially as I feel we rarely get such a japan-inspired soundtrack here in the west.

OKAMI is one of my favorite games I've ever played. The design of the game is so unique as it looks like you're in a Japanese painting that's coming to life before your eyes.
It's just so beautiful and breathtaking all the while you learn about the mythology with each Celestial Brush technique you learn and the demons and bosses you fight.
It's storyline is amazing, the combat is great, the characters are memorable, the backgrounds are gorgeous and music is BEAUTIFUL!
So happy you enjoyed this song!

Õkami is definitly a masterpiece of game, art style and music begin incredible, amazing and hopeful story that duelves in a lot of japanese Mythology, that if you know about makes the game even more amazing, and cool gameplay mechanics that while not the best for its original release on Playstation, did incredible well on the nintendo Wii, which I'll say its the best version to play and would be my recommendation, I do have the pc port who is not so bad either and I would say the second best choice to properly enjoy the gameplay since drawing the spells on a controller is a nightmare, and why it didnt do so well originally.
To this day its still the only game which I got all achievements because of how much I love it, XD

oh, thank you!! i just love Okami, i grew up on it, and to see you listen and analyse The Sun Rises is just the best! im glad that Okami is still getting a bit of limelight.
anyways, the song is about the main character, Amaterasu. she is the sun goddess, though she's restricted to a wolf form as you play the game. she's seen as the mother of all other gods, and so I think thats where the warm support comes in. this song plays during the final boss fight against Yami. he takes Ammy's power and as she is moments from death, her Celestial Envoy, Issun, spreads her image and, as a result, everyone you had met were praying to her. and like. THAT FUCKED ME UP MAN I FUCKING SOBBED. the prayers give her her powers back, and so she is returned to her finest form; the wolf they called Shiranui
that could also point to the happy, positive, hopeful sound comes from. you have made a comeback. youre playing the sun goddess who is defeating the lord of darkness. you are the one saving the people of Nippon and you are going to win. and i think that's exactly what the music is showing you.

Davi, my man, I have a song for you to hear, but first I have to say I love hearing your take on these themes because they really help me appreciate the technicality and the thought put into these songs. Especially when you know nothing about the game, but are able to extrapolate the meaning of the moment it's played just by ear, because the composer put that much thought into it.
My kudos out of the way, I really really really think any lover of video game music or even just classical music in general needs to hear God Shattering Star from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It's an absolute beast of a song that absolutely shatters your star when you first hear it.
I would love to hear your take on some others from the series, like Don't Speak Her Name from FE: Awakening, and Twilight of the Gods from FE: Echoes, but if no other song, God Shattering Star.

I just discovered this video and I must share some fun facts I remember of this game. One whopper being the original ending . In one scene of the game where ami gets the wind brush god technique I think a ghost or spirit addresses Ami as a beautiful maiden, nothing more becomes of this except hinting Ami is more then they seem. However In the original ending Ami was to transform from a wold form into a beautiful woman based on a woodblock art of the real sun goddess of Amatarasu. but with white hair and the same face tats as her wolf form. her aura so powerful that when her companion tries to jump towards her, but in this gogly form the aura around her is so hot he gets semi charred and has to back from her, keeping his distance to big farewell. This plan was changed However they used the design of the human ami for Queen Himiko but tweaked it a bit with a different hair color and color outfit change, her headdress was also altered but the design was so well liked it became the mirror used for the save points. Himiko's original design had been more focus on a very earlier ancient fashion from the real queen himiko timeline which was trashed. The sequel to this game I also heard was a discontinued project but someone else picked up on where they left off which is why the game design and texture is slightly different to the first game.

Also, it isn't the game's Main Theme (though it does reprise that leitmotif) but it _IS_ heard in the same kind of context that Monster Hunter games would play "Proof of a Hero" for.

SPOILERS FOR OKAMI!!!: The music plays during the final phase of the final boss, after a cutscene where he reveals a final form, grabs Amaterasu, and beats her to an inch of her life. As she almost dies, we get a scene of her companion Issun travelling around the game world, revealing to all the NPCs that you met in the game that it was Amaterasu that had helped them (since she's a wolf that doesn't talk and most people see her as a normal dog, basically no one notices that it's her answering their prayers when you do their quests), and their faith flowing towards her at that moment allows her to be restored to full power. This song is so hopeful and positive because it represents Amaterasu, who is a sun goddess, rising more powerful than before in order to completely destroy her enemy, the god of darkness.

Here's another one from Okami. I won't give too much context since I love how you try to explain the context through the melodies, so I'll just keep it simple and say this one is basically a parallel to Rising Sun

You should really play the game because then you will learn that this track also reincorporates some other tracks used throughout the game and how that impacts the track's meanings. Also it is beautiful and chill.

I know you're just doing patreon requests but this kind of music, in my opinion, is just not on the same level as something from Elden Ring or Monster Hunter.
It's good but simple. I still hope to see you do a comparison and analysis of the Radagon OST vs the main theme and help people understand why the music developed the way that it did. It's sneakily tells a story

Originally for Wii/PS2, had a sequel on the DS, PS3, Microsoft Windows, PS4, XBONE, and finally the Switch.
Any games with motion controls are fun, but some of the powers and puzzles do better with joystick control.
