The fact that this "reporter" call us "Belgian" speaking is wild. When King Boudewijn died, Albert was crown prince, so him becoming King was normal. He was close with his brother and carried out economical missions for Belgium, so claiming he was far away from the crown is not correct. It's true Philippe was being trained bij Boudewijn and the public saw him as heir apparent, just assuming the King would live still a long time, and nobody was expecting Albert to succeed him at at very elderly age, should he live longer than Boudewijn. When he died relativly young, the scenario was different, and for that reason it's true for many it was a surprise. Philippe not being married had nothing to do with it. Interesting footage from Albert's abdication, where Mathilde tries to bond with Paola on multiple occoasions, and she is plainly ignored. (A Belgian journalist called it out, and now I can't 'unsee' it :) ) There is a reason there is a bust of Queen Fabiola in Mathilde's office, and not of Paola :)

I think this might be an accurate. He said that Phillips father Albert had to take the king because he was married and Phillip was not. I don’t believe that’s in the Belgian constitution.

King Philip wasn't quite popular at that time and certainly not ready for the crown. Our constitution says, that the heir of the trone is the eldest son and as king Boudewain and queen Fabiola didn't had kids was his brother Abert the heir. So nothing rare about it. Fhilip became more natural, after he'd married Mathilda who made him more loose and natural in his behaviours, they called him for nothing "Wooden Claus", meaning being onnatural in the way of speaking; walking; acting etc...

I disagree in this case. They are important in matters of political crisis in Belgium such as when Belgium recently did not have a Prime Minister Fry believe close to one year the king was very important during this time, so in Belgium, where there are two languages in to people that don’t like each other, the king can be a very important person.
