How to MicroRoot Human Hair on Lifelike Reborn Dolls

  • Human hair presents an excellent option for your lifelike reborn baby dolls. In addition to providing color and texture options not readily available in mohair, human hair is durable and easy to root.
    However, there are some important differences between human hair and mohair that you must keep in mind:
    - Human hair is thicker than mohair, so it is not typically recommended for dolls intended to represent babies 3 months old or younger.
    - Human hair gets very dry, so make sure you do a moisturizing treatment before you root and keep a good leave-in conditioner on hand after rooting. I've gotten good results from collagen based products.
    - Human hair that is on a weft tends to have other things mixed in with it - synthetic fibers, fillers and etc. You can pick these out visually as needed, or use your rooting needle to sift out all but the finest hairs. I will be demonstrating that technique in this video.
    This tutorial will include:
    - Supplies needed for rooting human hair
    - Preparing the head for rooting
    - Preparing the hair for rooting
    - Which needles to use on human hair
    - How to root human hair
    - How to root the hairline

    Hello Everyone! It's great to finally post a video after a long hiatus due to medical issues. I'm still getting back on my feet, but looking forward to getting back in touch with more tips, tutorials and updates. I really appreciate all your well wishes and concern in my absence. I'm looking forward to getting back up and rolling again in the coming months. More to come!

      CustomDollBaby.com my mom had the hiatus surgery .... is that what you had? They had to collapse her lung to get to the hiatus hernia.... unfortunately she was 65 yrs old and took a heart attack 2 days after surgery..... but she had a history of heart problems since she was 44..... we lost her a few days after 😭 so I am glad you are recovering well, probably by the time you get this message ur all better ...

    I like the idea of the silicone baby fat. I ordered one from Walmart, however it was the wrong one,
    it was just a half of a circle not the whole circle. I looked closer at the box they were cleavage boosting inserts. It worked out ,they fit perfect in the bottom. One on each side of the gathered stitching.

    Kim, you should try using mohair around the hair line. It's much finer and you'll be able to use the 43 gauge.

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've tried that. In my experience, it did not blend well with the human hair. But I'd imagine the right type of mohair with the right kind of human hair may work well.

    can this method be used to make lace front wigs?

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool question! It's my understanding that lace front wigs are knotted. A teeny tiny crochet needle is used to loop a hair around a section of lace and then pull that strand back through the loop. But I've always wondered if those fancy silicone-front wigs, beards and mustaches that they use in Hollywood are rooted the way we root dolls. Might be another job opportunity for us, LOL ;)

    hi me Kim ...Question??? How do you root a real silicone baby. my baby's hair is falling out

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yikes! So sorry to hear about that!
      The challenge with rooting silicone is that it is not hallow on the inside like vinyl, so there is no way to glue the hairs in place. You only have the elasticity and stickiness of the rubber holding your hairs.
      High quality silicones, also known as Platinum Cure Silicones, are the best to root because they are very soft and elastic, making them good at gripping hairs.
      It will also be important to use to tiniest needle you can handle, 46 gauge if possible, when you root so you make the smallest holes you can. Tiny holes will also improve the rubber's ability to grip the hair.
      Finally, avoid using a brush to style your baby's hair and only use a baby comb. This will help minimize the amount of hair pulled out during styling. Hope that helps!

      Thank you! I am finally feeling better. That took a while. :/ I suppose the best mohair depends on the look you're trying to achieve. • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      How big is the hole? Is is a piercing for an earring or larger? Can you fill it with clay or do you intend for the hole to be there? For dolls with open nostrils and things like that, I sometimes use hot glue and a dark felt pad to seal the hole. Of course you don't want the glue to be hot enough to melt the doll. Even Gem Tac or another water proof adhesive should do the job.

    • @romansinterludee
      @romansinterludee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CustomDollBaby.com The hole is big enough to fit small paint brush fibers in it. it's not in the ear love, it's in the upper part of the ear. I'm not sure what to do. I'm trying to fill it up but everything I try runs through it. I might try the clay and gemtac

      Oh, sounds like an air bubble. A defect like that would normally warrant a refund if you catch it soon enough. I hope the Gem Tac helped.

    When I try to use a rice sock, I end up pulling out a very hairy sock!! How do you keep from "rooting" the sock???

      I have the same problem, actually, with the "jab & grab" rooting method. When I root single strand, the sock doesn't catch it. I'm thinking a smoother material will catch less hair. I'll let you know if I find a way to optimize it.

    How many hours does it take to root the average reborn head?

    • @Customdollbabycom
      @Customdollbabycom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It really depends on the artist, how you root, what type of hair and how much hair you root. I root one strand at a time and I root it full, so it takes forever - 10, 15, up to 40 hours. But I've heard other artists who root fine, or "jab & grab," as I call it and can finish a head in an afternoon. So, it's really a matter of what look you're going for and how you do it. Either way, if you want a lot of hair, plan to spend several hours on it.

      It looks like you and artists such as yourself are making minimum wage for all those hours of work to make these beautiful creations. Definitely an act of love for the work.

      Thanks for your interest. I'm not taking on any rooting projects at this time.
