  • A little something different with this video as it’s a mix of book shopping vlog, bookish chat and a haul. When I was in Bath last month I went on a charity book shopping crawl and decided to take you along. Before I did though I had a chat with you about book shopping from charity shops and then showed you what I hauled after I had been. I would love to know your thoughts on charity book shopping and if you do it or not? If you do, what has been the best bookish find so far? #bookhaul #bookshopping #secondhandbooks

    I actually volunteer for a free charity bookshop, where people can take 3 books and are encouraged (but not required) to give a small donation. I love it. I also love shopping in other charity shops when I go out.

    This vlog made me so nostalgic, I swear I could almost smell that special charity shop scent. I first discovered charity shops when I worked in London as an aupair, and when I realised there was also charity bookshops, I just couldn't believe me eyes! I've picked up so many good books from charity bookshops. They're not really a thing here and it's just one of the things I miss most.

    Love the idea of a charity book shop haul crawl too! On a good day, it's not unusual for me to get 10 books from one charity shop, but then I don't have your rules. I donate books and buy them as gifts to the charities I support, usually Mind and BHF. The amusing thing is when I can tell from the gift aid stickers that I have the same taste as one donor and buy several with the same number! The only problem with charity buys is they can be sooo random and then I end up not buying books I really want to read. During the pandemic I started buying more book on my tbr list. When I was first let loose in a second hand bookshop and a charity bookshop again, I bought a stack from both. So much satisfactiom cradling a literal stack of 10 books from the shop! Thanks for the continued inspiration Simon and all the comments on charity shop joys. 🙂

    • @SavidgeReads
      @SavidgeReads  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha. I have never noticed the gift aid numbers before. I may have to do that in the future, see whose taste I am most aligned with. The rules I have really help me from overbuying. Maybe I need more rules when I am in indie bookshops. Hahaha.

    It was lovely to visit Bath with you. My daughter lives near, she used to live in the centre at one time and it made me feel a bit closer to her for a minute.
    What fun to see those children’s books - that brought back memories - we had all of those at one time. We still quote them a lot as a family and my grandsons have just left school so it’s a long time ago.
    I applaud your rules and fully understand the reasons, however as a lower level author I would be chuffed to little mintballs to see one of my books in a charity shop. First because someone had owned it (even though they gave it away - I’d hope they read it) and two even though I didn’t get royalities it would be a sort of way to support charity by proxy. Great fun video.

    Thanks for showing the 1970s/80’s Ladybird books - I loved them too and had them all (except Cinderella oddly) as my Dad used to buy me one every month or so from the local newsagents. - I vividly remember the realistic paintings in them as they were the stuff of nightmares - the wolves and the witches anyway! Have re-collected part of them over the years (and later sets) - another favourite being ‘The Garden Gang’ ladybird books by Jayne Fisher who was a child author - I really wanted to be her.
    Of the fairytale series I think my favourites were Snow White and Rose Red and The Musicians of Bremen but I liked them all - they do turn up in charity shops and usually for about £1! Happy Hunting!

I remember loving Rapunzel with the lines “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down your hair, So I can climb that golden stair”, but I also loved Rumpelstiltskin too. Charity shops are where lots of people get their books, I know the library is the best place because it's free but if you actually would like to build your own home library you have not alot of choice. Spending a tenner or so on a new book is not possible.

      Nothing wrong with a charity shop haul, though there is a question around how the author makes any money out of that, whereas they definitely do if they’re borrowed from a library. I mix it up. Borrow from the library, buy new, buy second hand.

      @@SavidgeReads i understand, I was always less concerned with how much an author was making than I was fostering a love of learning through reading for my children. They have grown into adults who love to read and often buy new books, as do I now, but their little home library that I built on next to nothing because nothing was all I had is where their love of books began. I work in schools and it's so sad to me how many children don't have access. Thanks for your videos, I love to watch them, I've read a few books you've talked about that I wouldn't of otherwise known off.

      Hahaha. I’ll try not too. I managed to find three more ladybird classics at a car boot sale on Sunday. Was thrilled.
