    What other lifestyle habits have helped you look stylish and put together? I'll add another: Having pieces tailored!

    • @antoniaz
      @antoniaz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. A good tailor is like gold, as is a good cobbler. Mine can shave 1/4 inch off heels that are too high, restyle belts and bags, and so much more.

    I've never heard anyone suggest that you should have 3 basic colors in your wardrobe that are light, medium and dark.That's brilliant! What I'm realizing is that that for me it's black, ivory and camel. No wonder I'm finding that it's working! I really enjoy your informative and practical content 😊🙏

    The last tip is so important that I just subscribed - thank you for the way you explain things with minimal faff (but still a light-hearted/ humorous touch)!
    So many of the clothes that we buy off the rack are deliberately designed to be 'just okay' because they're supposed to have mass appeal (not just to accommodate varying styles but body types etc too).
    So I find that's why 'just throwing on' a t-shirt & jeans results in us not feeling as 'put together' as, say, the influencers & celebs we see. Because the truth is that their t-shirt & jeans usually isn't 'just' that - it's a t-shirt in a higher quality material with better drape, or jeans that taper just so to follow the lines of the body (pro secret: ALL the clothes that you see on TV have been *tailored* to fit that specific person).
    So if off-the-rack clothing doesn't even fit celebrities correctly (with all their personal chefs & trainers & whatnot), then why do we beat ourselves up about it not fitting us straight away, lol?? The little details (even without spending money, like tucking/ rolling/ scrunching) make such a difference!

      I'm 68 and I started transitioning to a classic wardrobe in my mid twenties. I have a rather artsy instinct toward clothing, which doesn't go over well in my region, so I learned to lean into the classic vibe. I actually love it. I have an enormous love of cable-knit sweaters, the kind that are perennial at Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren, et al., although I buy most of mine at Land's End on clearance. I choose plain color, classic bottoms that go with everything. I must be doing it (mostly) right, because I've had people assume that I'm rich, even though most of my life I've barely scraped by. Going through my closet lately, though, I've discovered some big mistakes in accessories (too artsy/low-class prints, or poor quality) and they're going out the door. I appreciate the endurance of classics; it saves me a lot of headaches since I don't have to worry about whether I look dated. My clothes are never "trendy" so they're never "out," either.

    I’ve known for a long time that I have a short torso and curvy lower half (proportionally, anyway) but from you I have learned that I have a short neck and a slight hourglass shape and I have been binging your videos learning how to dress “better” for the short torso curvier frame that I have! 🎉
    I’m shorter than you (5’1”) but your tips & tricks for the short torso chicks is SO helpful! Thanks for your awesome work!
    I’ve always dressed “in style” mostly, but have never felt STYLISH, and I want to start playing around with my wardrobe more 🙌

    Love the point you made about matching designs in accessories. So few people get this. I have a black and white purse that is spot on with a bracelet. I put them together with either an all black, or an all white outfit. I also match squigally shapes. It's hard to explain until you see it. So few go to this effort, but it's simple. The hard part is finding the matching pieces, but once you do, it's golden. Really elevates the whole look. I do the same thing with home decor elements. Very subtle matchy matches.

    • @JBUHJBUH
      @JBUHJBUH ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So true - I've found that style 'essences' partially address this, so (for example) it's been helpful for me to stick to curved/ draped/ soft/ fluffy/ rounded/ blended design elements because I know they won't fight with my natural lines. But others might do better matching more angular/ dramatic/ sharp/ geometric shapes & patterns instead.

    So I have kind of a silly question. I recently decided I want to be more stylish and rebuild a more classic timeless wardrobe. I have greatly enjoyed watching your videos as well as other TH-camrs. I think coworkers especially have definitely noticed the change (not in a bad way) and make comments about me being “dressed up.” Do you have any tips on how to transition into a new style? I’ve been trying to wear some more casual outfits the “old me” would wear but slowly phase them out. I feel a bit like I pulled a 180 with my style as I’m entering my 40s and people aren’t sure what to make of it.

    • @JulesBeth
      @JulesBeth  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not silly! I get it. But! People will adjust. Don’t pay attention to comments about being dressed up. I’d say thanks and move on. Eventually they’ll forget your former style and your new style will be you. Unless it’s a “I like your outfit!” I wouldn’t pay much attention to other comments 💗 You’ll be happier faster

    • @Sonia-rn1zz
      @Sonia-rn1zz ปีที่แล้ว +3

      People not knowing what to make of it is not your problem. You do you, girl! For example, I had this conversation with a colleague...
      Colleague: Why are you so dressed up? Is there a special occasion?
      Me: Yes!
      Colleague: What's the occasion?
      Me: Tuesday. 😊
      My dressing better made her very uncomfortable. She would talk about me and my dress sense to other colleagues in the office. I just ignored it and continued to be professional with everyone. She never stopped, but I didn't let it influence my behaviour or dress sense. 🎉

    At age 69, I have learnt the hi-lo mix; and contrasting textures. I adore leather clothing but will wear only one item at a time - leather trousers with a cashmere jumper; denim jeans with a leather biker. I have a collection of belts, and this year have learnt to tuck in a bulky jumper at the front: this has earned me a lot of compliments

    Thanks for the tips. Well thought-out and presented.
    Your advice to start with the shoes is bang-on, especially for those of us who have weather -- I live in Canada -- or live in big cities where you can walk, or take transit, to everything.
    I always start with footwear because: is it raining? is it snowing? Is it icy? Are we walking to dinner or taking an Uber or driving? And so on. I always marveled at how the Sex and the City crew could wear strappy sandals all the time in NYC. They walked for blocks. NYC has weather, doesn't it?
    Unfortunately, this can be very limiting. I have stunning high heels and platforms but I fear breaking my neck (again, oh yes I did before) if I have to go further than from the car to the table. If I'm walking on a slippy, slushy day, I have to think rubber soles.
    As a matter of fact, I have my cobbler put rubber soles on all my footwear that don't come with because (a) they're safer that way and (b) they last longer and (c) add a small layer of cushioning.
    Unfortunately, as a larger-busted, petite hourglass, I tend to gravitate to lower-cut tops than you do, even with high-waisted pants which I adore. That's because I can't bear any constricting around my neck (which I broke, remember?) and I feel they make me look like all boobage.
    Aside from that, I think your videos are great and deserve more viewers. I am so happy I found them!

    • @JulesBeth
      @JulesBeth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So true about the shoes in SITC! My heel game has a long way to go 😂 So glad you’re liking the videos!

    • @elbee1290
      @elbee1290 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, we in NYC certainly DO have weather. Then again, Sex in the City is not really representative of how most of us live here, neither in dress (or shoes) nor in the ability to afford a great apartment in a highly desirable neighborhood and be out spending ridiculous amounts of money constantly buying designer clothes and eating/drinking in fancy restaurants... just from the money we might earn as a columnist ....that show is almost pure fantasy.
      Like you, Antonia, we have to consider weather, how long we'll be walking, how many stairs there'll be in the various subway stations, and whether there'll be cobblestone streets where we're going. That's a LOT of influence on our footwear decisions!
      Love this channel for the tips on dressing if you're short-waisted. Many awesome pointers. Thanks Jules!

    Hi, I discovered your channel recently, and I love it. Could you please make a video for big-busted ladies with a short torso and/ or bigger belly? That is a real struggle. A big bust shortens a short torso even more, so you easily look like a walking bust - only chest and legs. 😀But all the usual tips to dress for it don't work. It is even hard to find fitting clothes since they will be frumpy around the shoulders and waist to be able to fit over the chest. I would highly appreciate some styling tricks. Thank you in advance.

      I wear sunglasses on my head all the time at work! But usually not on dark, cloudy days when it wouldn't make as much sense. I aim for the "I was outside, put these on my head, and forgot about them" look. If I had reading glasses (or someday when I likely do), I'd always have those things on my head

    I’m the originator of that phrase “shoes set the tone of the outfit”, as far as I know. I’ve been saying it for 50 years. Recently, I’ve been hearing it everywhere. By tone I mean level of formality. I still won’t wear dressy heels with casual things like shorts or jeans, in my youth, mixing casual and dressy just wasn’t done - it’s the biggest change to how we dress I’ve seen in my lifetime, along with the overall, casualization of dress. Silhouettes change on 10-20 year cycles, the rest is only details, which also occur in cycles.

      Never had a baby? They usually come out yelling at the top of their lungs and covered in goo. Not all of them scream (screaming is good, though, because it shows that they're breathing well) but every one of them is covered in goo.
