12ga. MT Round Ball vs ARMY HELMET and more!

  • Today we test out the MT Round Ball from Goodell Shotshell Co. Normally lead round balls are a challenge to keep accurate because they tend to deform badly during acceleration. I had to try mitigate deformation using household materials.

Well this design & it’s accuracy probably shouldn’t be a surprise. Remington’s original round slug from back in the 1960s was called a punkin ball at least among hunters and they flew good. I can’t remember if it had any raised groves but don’t think so, I think they were just a round 1oz ball of lead but they did sit in a plastic shot cup that exactly matched the diameter of the lead ball. We had reloading equipment for skeet shooting and used to play around with all kinds of projectiles and powder charges.

@@taofledermaus Jeff if you use a cut down metal shell that's been cleaned of all gunpowder and has no primer, you could put the cut down metal shell onto a heat source to dry the toilet paper wad faster. Just make sure it's been cleaned of all gunpowder and it's primer less for safety.

just so you know - I don't know about everyone else but for me I like the lead plate because it gives a (somewhat) consistent reading on how much penetration the rounds have and how much power they have. most things go right through ballistics gel, so you can't really compare. but the lead plate gives some cool results

Very impressive, and a resulting product that is high enough in quality that you could sell it as a handloading retrofit component for this round; turns something that's a quirky novelty into a genuinely impressive slug; one could deer hunt with one of your handloads.

For reference with the golf ball, a shotgun slug leaving the barrel at 1550fps is equivalent to 1057mph which is 6 times harder. It’s actually impressive how strong fiber and paper is when condensed really suddenly, you’d think it would cut it with that kind of transfer of energy

  • @lukearts2954
    @lukearts2954 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I really loved the break down of the wad at the end. Great demonstration of how you work and think.
It made me wonder: would silly putty work as a tight fit support wad?
As it is non-newtonean, it should be very hard when fired, and once acceleration is over, it should easily separate as it becomes silly again. The gas seal would prevent the putty from running into the powder, but it might be possible that some could get around the ball if stored upside down. Maybe worth an experiment?

Another thing you can use to cushion and isolate the slug from an over powder wad is "Cornmeal". It works gangbusters in any black powder shotgun I've ever used. A measure of power, an equal measure of cornmeal, a measure of shot (or slug) and lastly an overshot wad of light card stock (playing cards) and bobs your uncle. and no, you don't put a wad between the powder and cornmeal. The black powder is an explosive, so it burns exceptionally fast. This gives far better patterns than is achieved with plug wads which tends to interfere with the developing shot-pattern.

There is a legend that mankind suffered with round bullets until 1957, and only when the first artificial satellite flew into the vastness of the universe, the unknown hero came up with the idea to make a caliber bullet with a sub-caliber and leading belts, and the bullet "Sputnik" appeared.

Tip of the day : if you stir a little wood glue into your toilet paper pulp, your homemade wads will end up considerably stronger.
If you use a 50/50 mix of water and wood glue to make the pulp, and add in a little bit of finely shredded fabric to the mix, they end up orders of magnitude stronger than just tp+water.

There is also friction forcing the wad into the microscopic pores of the slug, giving it some adehrence, which varies. Its still creating drag and some wads may have more drag than adeherence+void thats when the leave the slug.
If the slug had some uniform scoring, dovetailing, i wonder if such a TP wad would stay attached better without need for glue, just from being forced into such.

Exceptionally interesting video. I don't know about everyone else, but I found the details at the end very helpful in explaining why you did what you did. On the subject of the toilet paper wad, would an adhesive like white glue add any additional rigidity, or would that cause damage to the bore of the accelerator?

Good stuff! The flaming targets was pretty good... Maybe you could next feature whatever slugs vs Road Warrior type armors ;D

Thank you, from the inner pyro in all of us. Fiiiiiire,
The way you walk and talk really sets me off
To a four-alarm, child, yes it does, uh, uh
The way you squeeze and tease knocks to me my knees
    'Cause you're smokin', baby, baby
    Fire (Uh, uh)
Fire (Sing us home) (Oh Lord)
    Fire (woo, woo, woo, woo)
    Fire

I like the flaming targets. I also like the supporting wads you made for these slugs.

Rifling makes everything better, and fire makes it more awesome.

The super-slomo at the end was very cool. The flame was getting party sucked into the hole in the helmet due to the low pressure inside the helmet (I'm assuming).

Your toilet paper wads are simply brilliant! In Edwardian England, there were many experiments with fancy wads for shotguns, some of which are still available. The makers of the round ball should get onto that and sell paper wads with the slugs.

Well fire was the theme today. Kind of looks like a pumpkin ball but when you look at it after you put it in the shotgun shell it looks like a helmet like you said. I guess these things would work pretty good for hunting. Put in that toilet paper in there was a pretty good idea it looks like. I guess when you shoot the poop out of these slugs the toilet paper is there to do its job. Just a little levity there. Thanks for the video y'all always enjoy these videos. OG must not have felt too good today because he didn't have very many funny cracks. Stay vigilant!

The Lead Plate is the ultimate test of worthiness!!! Anything that gets a finger wiggle on the lead plate is worthy. You should do a compilation of slugs that punch the plate!!!
