Ken Gentry denies his own Confession of Faith (Westminster), which interprets 2 Thes. 2 accurately:
"There is no other Head of the Church but the Lord Jesus Christ: nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the Church against Christ, and all that is called God."
[Westminster Confession, Ch. 25, sec. 6].
Gentry denies this, and holds to Preterism, as opposed to the Historicism of the Reformation.
There is a reason to lament his errors.

@@ryangallmeier6647Dr. Gentry's PARTIAL preterism is not heresy. Pastors do not have to agree with every word of the confession. I believe that church presbyters or whoever interviews candidates for the pastorate asks them to explain if/why they disagree with any part of the confession, and the presbyters determine whether the candidate's belief is beyond the pale of orthodoxy. (I heard this from a Matthew Everhard YT video.) Not every aspect of the WCF is essential belief. Some scripture passages are unclear, even mysteries, as Dr. Gentry states.

@@LucianaPelota It's hypocritical for Gentry to claim to hold to the Westminster Confession of Faith, and then teach contrary to what it clearly says about 2 Thes. 2, and the identity of the "man of sin, son of perdition".
It's not that "Some Scripture passages are unclear," that's not what Gentry is saying. He's saying that the Westminster Confession is wrong/incorrect/in error in its statements about 2 Thes. 2.
That's my contention with Gentry: hypocrisy!
Make sense? See where I'm coming from?

Yes indeed, particularly Dan 9:27 which is the foundation of dispensationalism - this is where they get the “seven year tribulation” from and they have been mistakenly taught to think an antichrist character confirms a peace deal with Israel 2000+ years into an unknown future, and thus detaching the 70th week from the previous 69. (Remember Jesus telling Peter to forgive his brother 70x7 times.......)

      How does he interpret the 1,260 days/42 months/'time, times, half a time' prophecy (Rev. 11:2, 3; 12:6, 14; 13:5; cf. also Dan. 7:25)?
Does he interpret it as a Preterist, or Futurist, both of whom think that the 1,260 days is a literal 3.5 years?
Or, does he interpret it PROPERLY, like our Protestant forefathers of old, as DAY=YEAR?
John Gill (1697-1771) demonstrated the widely-held view amongst Bible-believing Christians of the Reformation and post-Reformation era; Gill's commentary on Rev. 11:2 is helpful here:
"and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months... which being reduced to years, make just three years and a half: but then this date cannot be understood strictly and literally; for such a term can never be sufficient for the whore's reign, who was to rule over the kings of the earth, and all nations were to drink of the wine of her fornication: this is too short a time for her to gain so much power, honour, and riches in, as the 13th, 17th, and 18th chapters of this book show, as well as too short for the afflictions and persecutions of the saints by her; wherefore this must be understood prophetically of so many months of years; and a month with the Chaldeans consisting of thirty days, and a year of 360 days, which account Daniel used, and John after him, forty two months, reckoning a day for a year, after the prophetic style, make 1260 years..."
Preterists and Futurist BOTH deny that we ought to use the day=year principle in prophetic interpretation.
      This is a MAJOR mistake.

But these new Preterists make the same mistake as Dispensational Futurists, don't they?
Example: BOTH groups interpret the "temple" in 2 Thes. 2, LITERALLY.
Preterists claim that Paul was speaking of the literal temple that was still standing at the time.
Futurists claim that Paul was speaking of a 3rd, rebuilt temple off in the future, even from our own time.
Naw, the Reformation and post-Reformation writers has it right. They weren't Preterists, and they weren't Futurists, either.
Dr. Gentry is INCORRECT in his interpretation of 2 Thes. 2:3-4, the "temple," and the proper identity of the "man of sin, son of perdition".

Notice that BOTH Preterists and Futurists hold the same view of the "temple" in 2 Thes. 2?
Both groups claim that Paul is talking about a LITERAL temple:
      Preterists think Paul is talking about the temple that was still standing;
Futurists claim that Paul was talking about a temple that will be rebuilt in the future.

Whereas the Reformation and post-Reformation writers were well-aware that what Paul meant by "temple" in 2 thes. 2:4 was the CHURCH.
The "man of sin, son of perdition" would sit in the CHURCH of CHRIST (the "temple"), claiming himself to be god...etc.
Preterists and Futurists interpret Paul's "temple" as literal, not as representative of the CHURCH.
That's why the authors of the Westminster and 1689 Baptist Confessions (both Reformed confessions, by the way) in their chapters "On The Church" gave 2 Thes 2:3-4 as a reference citation.

The "man of sin, son of perdition" (aka. the "little horn" of Dan. 7; aka. the "sea beast" of Rev. 13:1-10) already rose to power, persisted for 1,260 literal YEARS before receiving its "deadly wound," which has been healing ever since.
We already know the identity of the Antichrist.
The book of Revelation depicts events that began in John's day and continue until the 2nd Advent of Christ...and beyond.

It was really cool to watch this because I already arrived at this exact conclusion a few years ago and it was totally incidental. I wasn’t even trying to find a reason to disbelieve the premillennial-dispensational view of this passage. I was doing some historical research on Nero and the Roman emperors and during one video, it mentioned Nero’s rise to power, and I remembered this passage. It sounded like a perfect fit, and so out of sheer curiosity, I looked at one of my study bibles for the date of 2 Thessalonians and it matched perfectly. So this was definitely a cool video to watch to confirm that I wasn’t the only one who came to this conclusion. And this only provided even more information to confirm my conviction. Thank you!

One of the great errors and problems in Biblical Hermeneutics is that most people don't even know what it means, and for those who know, they don't understand the basics of Hermeneutics is that we have to read the Scriptures with a view towards how is the writer meaning what is written and how would the hearers/readers have understood the letter/passage. Additionally the context, both immediate and broader must be considered, and the Bible is its own interpreter. Many other rules exist, but these are of paramount importance in the proper meaning of the Scriptures. God has not given us His word to confuse us, but rather to reveal His will to us. Laziness and ignorance are not valid reasons to take God's Name in vain by attributing to Him, what He has not intended.

Very good work here by Gentry on apostasy. In its Classical Greek meaning it meant to rebel against a military commander (Bible Gateway). Gentry may be correct, but the Man of sin may have been the Jews in rebellion from God and Rome. This interpretation was originally put forth by Nehemiah Nisbett (1808) in his book, "The mysterious language of st. Paul, in his description of the man of sin." After all, the man of lawless was destroyed by outshining glory of the lord's coming...this refers to the destruction of the Jews...Nero was not destroyed by the coming of the lord!

I can agree that Nero was the man of perdition, but it also holds that Constantine was too, they are but ancestors of all popes to follow. The papacy itself, regardless of who fills the seat at any given time in history, including today. And I can see the purple and scarlet and gold of jewish priests being transferred to catholicism's priests. It's all one, a continuation behind a different mask, down through time. My point is that saying Nero was the man of perdition does not rule out the pope also being the same. They are all one. The beast fills each new incarnation as the last one dies off (or retires). The Pope seems to be the Image of the Beast (Papacy/Vatican), the second beast comes from the earth, and the vine of the earth is thrown into the winepress of the wrath of God, so the vine has to be false religion and therefore connected back to the pope and the papacy who are mystery babylon with a christian veil, and you cannot be more Antichrist than that.

Here's Gentry's own Confession of Faith (Westminster) on the proper interpretation of 2 Thes. 2:
"There is no other Head of the Church but the Lord Jesus Christ: nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the Church against Christ, and all that is called God."
[Westminster Confession, Ch. 25, sec. 6].
Gentry has abandoned his own Confession on this issue, and has replaced it with the errors of Preterism.

there are several points that undermine this interpretation:
    - he says επισυναγωγη is used in 2thess2 and hebrews. but the verbal base is used by the Lord at the end of matt24, when he will send his angels to gather his elect from the 4 corners of the world, which refers to the eschatological promise of the regathering of israel.
    - he says the 'now you know' means the thessalonians knew the context. but, for a start, the traduction is faulty. the greek says 'now the thing which withholds you know, towards the revealing of him in his season'. so, paul is not talking about something withholding the revealing of the man of sin, but that the thessalonians now know what's withholding the parousia and the episynagoge, namely the apostasy and the revealing of the man of sin.
    - he says the man of sin didn't need to enter the temple because the grammatical pattern in 2thess2.4 and luke4.29 are similar. but they are not. luke uses the prep εις which means 'with the objective of'. paul uses the avd ωστε which means 'with the result of'.

  • @sarunkissangas531

I respectfully disagree with several aspects of this argument. Primarily, there seems to be a tendency to force facts to fit specific interpretations. For instance, there is no linguistic evidence to support the notion that the name "Claudius" inherently means "the restrainer" in Latin; its literal meaning is "lame."
Furthermore, if Nero is being identified as the "man of lawlessness" in 2 Thessalonians 2:9, the passage describes characteristics that include performing miracles and signs. Historical records do not attribute such supernatural acts to Nero. Moreover, while Nero did persecute Christians, he did not exclusively target Jews who opposed the Gospel.
Lastly, regarding the events of 70 AD, it was indeed Vespasian who commanded the Roman forces during the siege of Jerusalem, not Nero.

So gathering together to Him of 2 Thess 2, which Paul referred to in that passage as "that Day," that all Christians have been waiting for--their final redemption of their bodies (getting their resurrection bodies), is really just Christians no longer being a sect of Judaism and they can gather as one body separate from Judaism. Wow. What mental gymnastics one has to do to arrive at that. And how anticlimactic. What we thought was something so glorious is just meeting separate from Judaism because the Temple was destroyed. And as if they weren't already meeting together as a separate body.

The whole of world history pivots on the crushing of the head of satan and his children, who have stolen the birthright, the issue of which only God can settle and He will at the end of time.

Unfortunately, this video exemplifies the major problem with most post-millennial eschatology. In order to make your theory work, you have to spiritualize the text and rely on symbolic interpretations instead of textual interpretations. Some questions for Dr. Gentry:
    1. What is your basis for saying that taking his seat in the temple of God does not have to mean the one in Jerusalem?
    2. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan (v. 9). How did Satan empower the rise of Nero? Gentry doesn't tell us.
    3. The lawless one performs false signs and wonders (v. 9). What false signs and wonders did Nero perform? Gentry doesn't tell us.
    4. The man of lawlessness perpetrates wicked deception (v. 10). What wicked deception did Nero perpetrate? Gentry doesn't tell us.
    5. God sends strong delusion on people (v. 11). What strong delusion did God send in the time of Nero? Gentry doesn't tell us.
    6. Why isn't it reasonable to think that Paul is writing about something that would be fulfilled centuries later, not within a few years? Isaiah prophesied that a virgin would conceive and bear a son, and would call his name Immanuel (Is. 7:14), a prophecy that wouldn't be fulfilled until Christ's birth 7 centuries later.
    7. Why is the coming of Jesus Christ simply a visitation of judgment upon Jerusalem and not an actual physical coming?
    8. Who says that the day of the Lord is merely the destruction of one city and not a more far-reaching judgment upon all mankind?
I could go on, but this should suffice to demonstrate the significant gaps in Gentry's analysis. The pre-millennial interpretation of 2 Thes. 2 as a future event that will be fulfilled when the antichrist is revealed makes much better sense of the text. Treating it as a historical event with Nero as the man of lawlessness and the destruction of Jerusalem as the ultimate fulfillment is poor exegesis.

    • @70AD-user45

bonajab It simply means after the persecutions from the Old Covenant Jews were over, those Christians who are left will be spiritually changed when the New Covenant was consummated. This is Covenantal language. They were in the process of changing from the Old and into the New Covenant. This is what Christ said about being born again. Israel needed to be spiritually reborn from above. This is what Paul meant when he said we will be changed. It was a spiritual rebirth (or changing) from the Old Covenant (physical land of Israel) and into the New Covenant (new spiritual Israel or the Christian Church which are one and the same).

After ( and for the blind... if) you are are convinced they are lying see a video called The Kabbalistic seeds of astrophysics evolution and quantum mechanics by the Truth is Stranger than fiction. I also recommend Daylight Rider who I just happened on. The amount of deception is very high .. after satan took control of ciricullum in education and in many seminaries, as well as our medias. For dispensationalism I recommend Bruce Gore Dispensationalism in America. Jesus said my people perish for lack of knowledge.
Luke 8 17 ... all things will be made known .. but 1 Cor 2 14 ... The things of the Spirit of God are foolishness to the natural man. This is why we are so blind as a society.

The Apostle's whole point was that the day of the Lord was NOT at hand. If Paul was speaking of the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD then the language should have been different in that it, the day of the Lord was near.
2Ths 2:2: "That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand."

That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand... also ghe verse says the day of Christ is at hand. But he reads as the day of Christ has already come.. lot of differences between at hand and has come... these things may look small but makes a big misunderstanding.. this person maybe right in explaining few things... but one must know that bible prophecies can have the parallel fulfilment in past and future also.. for example Daniel's ch9 70th weeks prophecy has already fulfilled by Jesus Christ and also has a future parallel fulfilment of the 70th weeks (7years) prophecy in which 3.5years by the 2 witnesses and 3.5years by the antichrist in future in revelation....

    A few errors:
    - The Thessalonians didn't know who the man of lawlessness was - they knew who was restraining (preventing) his appearance - the Roman Emperor had to give way to the Holy Roman Emperor, the occupant of the Papacy.
    - The Book of Revelation was given to the churches in Old Testament symbolism. What is the Temple gathering in the New Covenant - the Christian church. The man of sin will stand in a Christian church and declare himself God. It's a no brainer since the 5th century who he is. He won't be revealed to the world and destroyed until the Second (and only) return of Jesus Christ, so he's still standing in that church today calling himself the blasphemous “Infallible Word God”.
    - That man will appear AFTER a great falling away from the faith. When did the churches fall away before 70 AD? Contraire, they were adding great numbers everyday and dying for the faith. It happened beginning in the 2nd century with the rise of the early suggestions of a Trinity Godhead, adding another spirit person to rival the only Holy Spirit, the Father, and culminated in the organization of the church/state of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. The Apostasy Paul spoke of is her idol worship of Babylonian, Egyptian gods, and the renaming of pagan Roman gods as Jesus, Mary Joseph, Apostles, and Saints to deceive the masses. (Today, almost every Protestant denomination has signed peace agreements with Rome that the protest against her has ended. Thus, the Apostasy is complete). Christ will return anytime.
    - Full Preterism is the Gospel of the Jesuits (as well as Futurism), you might want to repent of teaching it).

Here's Gentry's own Confession of Faith (that he claims to hold to):
Westminster Confession, Ch. 25, sec. 6,
"There is no other Head of the Church but the Lord Jesus Christ: nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the Church against Christ, and all that is called God."
Ken Gentry DENIES his own Confession of Faith because of his presupposition of Preterism.

The 'little horn' also known as the antichrist is a kingdom of man/mankind which arises amongst the 'ten kings/kingdoms' (which represent world government as symbolized by the number ten - government). The 'eleventh' little kingdom grows so powerfull, symbolized by displacing three others and, thereby, becoming 'an eighth kingdom which belings to the seven'. It is also 'the kingdom which was wounded by the sword, but lived' when God went down to Babel and 'wounded mankind's effort to unite in rebellion to God.
It is also symbolized as being the resurrected kingdom, by being given the number eight and called the kingdom 'which once was, now is not, but would come again' as the resurrected kingdom of Babel/Babylon; the resurrected attempt by mankind to again unite in rebelluon to God, his 'wound of dispersion' having been healed, mankind is again in rebellion (apostasia) to rule himself as his own lord and master of his own destiny (equal with God) apart from God the Creator and his Messiah.

Jesus warned everyone to flee Judea if they should see the abomination of desolation from Daniel at the Temple. According to Gentry, that prophesy was fulfilled in 70 AD, but the church had actually fled several years earlier because Jesus warned everyone in Luke 21 to flee when they saw armies surrounding Jerusalem, and that happened in 66 AD, then the Romans left for several years and the church fled.
Another problem with every preterist interpretation is the fact that it was impossible to flee when the Romans approached Jerusalem in 70 AD because Jewish forces had already closed the city to prevent anyone defecting, then the Romans built a siege wall around the city wall to prevent anyone escaping. And by the time the Romans reached the Temple, where they could have conceivably fulfilled the abomination prophesy but didn't, most Jews had already been killed from from violence, disease or starvation.

All speak of future events that can't fit the preterist viewpoint. Furthermore, there were 70 weeks (groups of 7 years) for the nation of Israel. There were 69 till the fall of the temple in 70 AD. Where's the last week???
This passage is only difficult if you try to put it into the preterist perspective. Otherwise, it's quite plain. Heed not those who have an APPEARANCE of godliness, but deny the future coming of our Lord, saying that "since the father's(of the church) have slept, all things remain the same... Avoid such. Teaching after his own wants, and not according to Christ (and what He taught).

Gentry seems to have failed here, with all due respect, and there are many other respected historians and theologians who support this evidence. If Christ's first coming was in physical, literal form, why would we doubt His second coming to be so? It's not spiritual or figurative. He will set foot on the Mount of Olives, and it will be split! Before digging into the subject matter , first let us define what "lawlessness" is? If one transgresses the law , that is lawlessness. However there is another meaning of "lawlessness" which is not easily seen and understood ! And this other meaning is exactly opposite that of the first.
If the first meaning is the transgressing of the law , then its opposite is the absence of transgression of the law because if one is not under the law and the law is not applicable to him , then he is said to be in a state of lawlessness! And who is the only one who is not under the law , that the law does not apply to him? Who is that? He is the Lord , yes , he is the only one who is not under the law! And because of that , he can never sin! So in this regard , "lawlessness" takes another meaning which connotes the state of being "sinless". There is no law to accuse him because the law simply does not apply to him! Therefore, in the Lord "lawlessness" is "sinless-ness".
This is the one who is coming to destroy those who are in the first meaning of lawlessness-the sinners of the world!

When ever Paul writes of the temple he is referring to the Christian church, never to the edifice in Jerusalem. He always sees the tabernacle of the new covenant in heaven. He knows that God has left the old temple, and that it has no significance. When we read then of the man of sin presenting himself he is talking of false teachers in the assembly, even as John in describing the spirit of antichrist, coming out from among them. The son of perdition is Judas, that it is mentioned here shows we are dealing with a class of people, not a single entity. It cannot be a heathen, as Judas was an apostate from the covenant people. He is writing to Greeks who have no connection to the Levitical city, Christs command to flee has no meaning for them, as it does to the Hebrews, where the language is all of no certain dwelling place, no continuing city, in view of that imminent tribulation which befell them. John had no reason to leave Jerusalem until that time, after which he assumed Paul’s old circuit in Asia Minor, which Tertullian called John’s nurselings.
