Oh my gosh yes you are so right! It makes a huge difference to approach a project as a learning experience instead of “skipping to the good part” as you put it. It has literally taken me years to slow down and stop cycle skipping and ending annoyed with subpar results 😂.
I’m still working through that myself!!! We will get there. I think our culture has a lot to do with it. In previous generations when everything took longer they were used to waiting for results. We get instant ones but I think they got better ones. Better food, better clothes, most things made are just much better when made slow. ♥️ I have sorta been rushing through my current project so I’m glad you left this comment.
As per your request at the end, you can add what’s called a “waist tape” into the inside of the dress that will shift some of the weight from the shoulders to the waist. I’m not a historical dress expert by any means, but I think if you just tack some 1” wide cotton twill tape to the waist seam and then sew on a few hook and eye closures, it will really help take some of the strain off the weaker strap seams while you’re wearing it. Hope this gives you an idea and well done on your beautiful new dress!
I was about to tell her the same thing. In many of Abby Cox's videos where she looks at antique clothes, there are many examples of a stay tape or a waist tape sewn inside garments. (People were *NOT* smaller in the past (video) time stamp 8:16.) They are sewn into skirts the same way they are sewn into tops, and that is, tacked down at the seams and a couple of hook and eyes. It takes the strain off of the fashion fabric and the stay tape acts as the true waistband, holding the weight of the skirt around your waist.
Love that you speak to growth in your sewing journey. It’s so true. We can take time to develop new skills or stay stuck making the same mistakes and poorly fitted garments
Thank you for saying this. I at times just want to make “something” and I have to remind myself to slow down and try to learn something new with every make
Absolutely gorgeous! I will wait patiently for the next segment in your series. I ordered 2 patterns today. One was vintage Vogue FF uncut. The other was a reproduction sleeveless corset. I think that's what it is called. Definitely not a bustier. Already made one of those. Love watching you and seeing what you've made.
Drew! I am so happy for you and may I first say you are doing a awesome job on your Anniversary dress! It is beautiful and I know you will look Gorgeous in it. I cant wait to see all three of the videos! Thank you so much for sharing your creating process. I am working on my channel for content. I hope I am as successful as you are with my channel. This is truly beautiful! Your choice of fabric, trim and patterns are spot on. The gloves will set it all off! And I need lots of pictures of you in this masterpiece once it is all done! Congratulations and Best wishes for many more wonderful years to come! Sew Pink aka Arub Williams. 😁

Thank you. I’m glad you like it. We are having a big anniversary party and getting photos taken so I was excited to make it look like a wedding dress without being over the top lol
This dress is phenomenal!! Beaded trim on 50s and 60s cocktail dresses has a special place in my heart, and what you made truly inspired me to attempt something similar in the future. Thank you for sharing your work!
Yasssssssssss!!!! I always said i wanted to make my own wedding dress and now you have definitely inspired me too!! I have a few years to practice but you make it look easy
Thank you! Go for it. This pattern for the dress itself was pretty easy. So that would be my advice get a pretty easy dress pattern and jazz it up with the fabric and embellishments. Good Luck
Absolutely Stunning! I agree a waist stay definitely! I would have lined it, especially the bodice. I grew up in the 1950s and early '60s and dresses such as yours always used a light weight crinoline under them to support the full skirts. They are easy to make and if you're a really serious vintage clothes wearer then you'll need one to get the full effect of that fabulous skirt. Many dresses of that era had them built in. Good luck with your channel and I'm definitely looking forward to watching you as your journey through vintage dressing progresses! Best wishes Lovely Lady!
You're so talented. It's wonderful to see vintage patterns sewn up, the fabric choice makes them look so different. Going to be the hundredth person to say yes to a waist stay. The trim and fabric are just the eye candy to send me shopping 😉. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic choice and placement of that trim. It's so classy and elegant! And I love the idea of making it as separates. Even here where you perhaps won't be able to get a lot of use out of wearing the two pieces separately, lol.
Love the patterns you're using, the material is gorgeous and the trims are so wonderfully feminine! Your husband will fall in love with you all over again!!!
Your dress turned out beautiful. Girl you have come a long way. I notice that you are a lefty, do you find hand sewing at times a bit awkward. Even pinning the fabric together sometime is awkward for me as a lefty. Having said that sewing is in my blood so nothing will stop me from creating my curate one of a kind wardrobe. Cant wait to see the other pieces completed. I am inspired by you my dear.
The dress is so beautiful! You have done such a wonderful job. Your e going to look fabulous on your anniversary. Have you considered horse hair braid for the bottom of your skirt? I don't know if it will take any weight off but it might help kick it out some.
