    Gruul is the literal wildfire burning bright. You will catch ablaze and bit hit by the falling trees, and those who follow the guild are often just as strong willed.
    When you mix two aggressive colors, you get an aggressive play style that will run over everyone in the path... Even if the flame burns so bright that it exhausts its fuel early

    • @elizabethhicks4181
      @elizabethhicks4181 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Jake Shively blue is actually the core color in the Temur wedge, if I remember right. It’s more like “Blue exerts it’s control over the chaos and wild nature of red and green, focusing them.”

    • @saltefan5925
      @saltefan5925 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gruul hates blue, yes. Temur however, is based off of the Sultai. Trading the ruthless ambition for fierce passion.
      This means that they are a calculating people, using their knowledge to assert themselves as the alpha predators of the wilderness where they live while respecting nature. These people see the value in raw power, just like the gruul, but also knows that not all can be solved with brute force. They use their magic to enhance themselves, destroy those who seek their destruction, and mostly uses blue to learn and hinder those who would disturb them. Stubborn denial is a perfect example of this.
      I see it as a tempered simic combine (love for knowledge about nature) and gruul merged in order to survive.

    • @dragullongblackfang8073
      @dragullongblackfang8073 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      blue is another way to for red and green to become stronger and protect other in a kind of natural way remember red and green does everthing to become stronger naturally and to protect the person their love

    • @Izhuark
      @Izhuark 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Impaleification Blue isn't close to nature at all, it seek perfection of oneself through knowledge wich go totally against the natural order (best represented in the esper combination in which blue is central). The presence of sea creatures and wyverns is because all animals have an affinity toward a certain colour depending on their habitat (land cards) or their comportment. If blue use fish and drakes it's because they naturally have a blue comportment (drakes must be cunning to survive and strive for superiority, sea creatures as a whole must adapt and evolve in a ways that go well beyond land dwellers) not because blue cares about nature. What you describe about blue is more akin to simic philosophy.
      In the same way Blue doesn't care about being independent, it just care about being better (not in the sense of domination but of personal achievement) at any cost. For example with the help of others (with white) or by being opportunistic and egotistical (with black) both of wich can actively and easily advance it's goals while being independent or instinctive seems at first irrelevant. That is why those colour are "allies" they share basic common interest. "Ennemy" colour philosophy is also interesting but it go one step beyond that.

    I would argue that there is one combination that Gruul hate's far more than just straight Blue, Azorius.
    As you've put it in your video, the 3 defining traits of Gruul are Instinct, Nature, and Freedom, meanwhile the Azorius are the antithesis of that in every respect.
    While the Gruul value Freedom above all else the Azorius seek Order and Control, and are entirely willing to trample all over freedom to achieve it. In fact, the Azorius pretty much view Freedom as just another facet of Chaos, and therefore the ultimate threat to Order.
    The Gruul embrace Nature and it's constant change, while the Azorius couldn't be more unnatural if they tried.
    And the Gruul also place incredibly high value on Instinct while the Azorius view instinct as being inherently flawed and chaotic, seeking to analyse and study everything before making any choices.
    Another fact to note is a matter of dynamics, the Gruul are Dynamic, they embrace the chaos of the moment, ridding the wave and accepting whatever happens so long as it is natural and doesn't infringe upon their freedom, in essence they are constantly changing and happily embrace that change. Meanwhile the Azorius are Static, they seek Order, Control, and Stagnation. They refuse to act without careful consideration and their primary concern isn't their own advancement but rather to prevent anyone else from moving forwards.

    • @MAnnnooo1
      @MAnnnooo1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So Gruul is free market and Azorius is the state (except for the order part, in my opinion)

    dime? Niece just got into magic a couple months ago. Her parents taught her the basics of the game, and then when they explained the general strengths and weaknesses of each individual color recently and had her pick a color combination to start with she chose red and green, which was surprising, because her parents are Boros and Dimir. So now I get the privilege today of teaching this kid the basics of how to build a strong Gruul deck, and hopefully building an effective deck in those colors with the set her parents got her for Christmas...wish me luck 😅

    This and the Selesnya one make me curious for Naya philosophy

    • @nykthar4251
      @nykthar4251 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well it makes green the center of this color combo, since selesnya and gruul are both allied color pairs, so green gets the most out of it, but boros, is an enemy color pair, so both red and white get the short end in this combo, meaning it’s mostly about community, interdependence, and nature, with red and white having some say in their needs

    • @EpicMTGMusic
      @EpicMTGMusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be like Angry White People under Selesnya's Vegan organic hydroponic weed and not like Full cocaine Gruul.

  • @hyperdreamer9483

    If I was to represent Gruul in one song reference it’d be,” born to be wild,” Green wanting freedom for nature and red wanting freedom for everyone it holds close, honestly this is probably one of the most wholesome guilds around despite it’s savagery
    And i hope he does a video on Boros

  • @arbiterally101
    @arbiterally101 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice to see these videos. Excited to see the Boros and Dimir perspectives.
    Honestly despite being a card game, I do like that there's at least an attempt at complex philosophy behind each color on the mana wheel. As a relatively new player it's a easier way to figure out which direction to take your first deck. Are you intensely goal-oriented and prefer victory despite the costs? You may prefer Black mana. Are you interested in order, cooperation, and ultimately safety? May prefer White mana. Perhaps you're motivated by emotional drives, passions, and desire absolute freedom for the individual? May like Red mana.
    A simplification to be sure, but ultimately one that makes you think a bit deeper and get into the more complex aspects of the game. Which for a card based strategy game, it makes sense. If you can get into the more philosophical angles, you may have a better time getting into the game and the problem solving required to be successful.
    Overthinking aside, a lovely series of videos and I thank you very much for making them, as well as the community for being so dedicated to the hobby.
