  • Extraction Shooters are one of the hottest trends in gaming today, with big studios like Activision, EA, and now Bungie all attempting to cash in on their growing popularity. But are these studios setting themselves up for failure, or are extraction shooters the future of gaming? Let's take a deep dive into the subject, and see if this genre really is all it's built up to be.

The reason why these battle royale games are outperforming extraction shooters is because they’re free… not to mention how long these other br games have been out… plus those games are on all consoles for like 6 plus years, unlike these newer extraction shooters other than hunt showdown

True… extraction shooters are too exclusive and is either in alpha/beta stage, a rumored release or on PC only. Also it’s just not being properly introduced to the average casual player.

It's such an idiotic comparison to make. "genre 1 has more players than genre 2, therefore the latter cannot become more popular"
There is so much more than genre that goes into popularity.

You could probably take a look at Bandai's upcoming Synduality Echo of Ada as it is their version of an Extraction Shooter. I feel like Synduality will have its own weird niche inside of the genre but it can also branch out because of the other genres it utilizes. I agree that Extraction Shooters won't be the future but they're all so similar that Synduality is the one that sticks out to me based on everything that it is meant to be.

I think Marathon has a chance to actually shake up the extraction shooter genre. The problem we currently face is that no AAA studio has gone "all-in" on an extraction game yet. You dont have any "big" extraction shooters on Steam yet. There's just no options for anyone honestly. Like yes Tarkov is the biggest one in the genre right now, but even that... tons of people won't even consider it because it's not a AAA studio, and it's not on Steam. I think we just need more/better options than what has been offered thus far. I personally love extraction shooters, but I recognize why we haven't had one become a huge hit yet. Someone will figure out the formula and make it work, it is 100% inevitable at this point. Tons of people are growing tired of BR and team deathmatch games.

I play Arena Breakout. Which is an extraction shooter for mobile. Which I do play casual. I don't really grind or anything on it and have a pretty decent stash. I enjoy the game for the simple fact that you can lose it all. And I usually do. Also you forgot about the other side of that. You can play as a main character or as a scavenger. Which gives a diverse gameplay experience. I guess to me it doesn't matter what type of game it is. As long as it catches my attention.

    Great stuff
It sucks that Tarkov has some pretty cool gunplay and customization and Hunt Showdown with awesome bayou horror, but whenever I mention “would be cool to have some single player elements”, I get a lot of criticism for that, mostly on the Hunt side.
Tarkov at least has access to offline in the base game but nothing is lost and nothing is gained, and a mod that would allow single player with loot gained but that requires a connection to a third party server, I think.
Hunt did add some single player elements but it’s so barebones, it’s just training grounds. However, there are rumors considering single player
I’m glad that both games has their successes but,
in addition to “extraction shooters” being niche, it really doesn’t have much options for those who like the vibe but not online. I think they could pull in new people just by having officially supported offline single player elements.

A separate comment just to talk about Bungie’s New Marathon,
I think they really shot themselves in the foot. I’ve seen a lot of people finding out about Marathon’s existence through MandaloreGaming and then the games on AlephOne.
And I’m sure that they know the rich story and innovation that the game brought to FPS from those videos (I.e. dual wielding tied with Rise of Triad, mouse aim, vertical aiming, etc).
So it really puzzles me, why would they go with extraction shooters and not like a good campaign shooter with multiplayer as a bonus? Even worse when I realize how niche the style of game is after the video.
No offense to Destiny players, but I really don’t see what entices people to keep on playing outside of Crucible PVP. Gunplay feels nice and the art department is really interesting but that’s about it. There’s seems to be a sense of misery lurking in that community, like an addict trying to fight off a withdrawal. This does not bode confidence to how marathon would be.
Activision is the brain prion disease that infected Bungie’s talent, and it sad that a once small studio with big ambition becomes a corporation with vision that falls short.

The fundamental problem is that as a concept the "extraction shooter" isn't even all that new. Jadex Windreness from Runescape back in 2001 over twenty years ago, they also had a early vision of a battle royal in like 2005 but not important, is in function a extraction shooter but 20 years ahead of everyone else. You pointed out the core problem, it not a game that by design is not fun more the 80%ish players that play game fun the sake of fun. Much as so many multiplayer game keep chasing the competitive players at the expense of making the game worse for 80%ish of fun player (and competitive players but they cry the loudest and hardest so hard to say for certain).
Unless Marathon can make its self fun to play for the 80% of players that just want to kick back and have some fun then it will most likely meet either a sad end or relegate its self to a game you only hear about in conversation from content crators.

The only thing is that for extraction shooters to be the new trend, they’re mostly either in alpha, beta stages, rumor releases or PC / mobile only. The genre is too exclusive for an audience. I think open world survival pvpve will take its place eventually because extraction shooter devs just don’t know how to push or promote this genre. If they keep it up, BRs might make a comeback until then…

There is a middle way also.. but noone is making something like this. I used to play a MMORPG 15 years ago called Conquer Online. It is still Up and running now. If you get killed in this game you lose stuff from you inventory but not the gear equipped. On the other hand the killer gets flagged as a "killer" with more stages depend on how many kills he has. Also a timer begins and he has to be online and hide untill this timer gets to 0. If he is killed before the timer gets to 0 he could lose more or even everything from inventory, or, if he killed more ppl and he is in lets say stage 3 killer, he could lose all his gear on death. Because he is flagged as a killer the one tha kills him, will not be flagged as killer. This gameloop has created clan wars, hunts, setting traps to get gear from ppl, friendships and more in that game. Would love to see something like this now with high end graphics.

Lets see... I could, wait in queue for 20 min to run around looking for a gun for 5 min to get into one firefight with someone, and if its a game like Tarkov i'll deffinetly lose because they have been playing for longer and have better gear. Or I could play halo and be shooting someone every 10 seconds, and every time I re-spawn I'm just as powerful as the most powerful person on the map. Like, where exactly is the appeal of these games?

      @stemel4180 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

its not a battle royale where you have to find a gun in game and que are are 1 to 3 min (but thats just tarkov slow loading time). I would def play a game that gives me tense moments, where even a single step sound could decide between surviving or not, instead of mindless respawning every 10 sec and going forward in a single direction shooting at random people jumping around like they are bunnies without any obj or motivation. Probably a queue of 20 min would be more appealing if you ask me.

I think there's a lot of potential, and ultimately disagree with your stance
Extraction shooters are just so early in the subgenre that I think it's unlikely to gauge a proper prediction on the future of them.
Popularity and player numbers should not be considered against games that have had way longer lifespans.
Consider that all these new extraction games that are going to come out are still unreleased and in development; I think it's worth thinking about the gameplay design that is likely to differ from game to game as the genre finds its footing for different audiences. An extraction game like Dark and Darker ends up a little more casual due to the design of classes' abilities and the dynamics between them, compared to something like Tarkov, where stakes are super high, you can die from a sniper if you're not careful, that sort of thing.
I think that the emergent gameplay that is the result of the structure of the genre is something game designers are excited about because generally, we want to have those sorts of exciting experiences come out of games organically. So, naturally, I think that going forward, all these studios would be designing dynamics to fit wider audiences, but still have that natural emergent narrative come out of the game. It's also worth thinking about the sort of audience that MMOs cater to, in which those can sort of end up as those huge timesink/grindy hardcore games, and those can still see a lot of activity.
I would predict, possibly the sorts of things game designers would alter from the formulas we have from Hunt, Tarkov, Dark n Darker, etc, to make them more casual. Smaller lobbies with larger maps? More PvE elements? Modes where you drop in with only your allies? MMO-styled raids? I think there are tons of things that can be changed and shaken up with this subgenre, and it's an interesting evolution that I could maybe see roots in Co-op/mission shooters, and MMOs with always-on PVP zones.
    Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Marathon can be a massive hit and still take the L. They have to add depth to the game besides map secrets and online events. If they can somehow implement various types of modes across the planet in-game that players can transition into seamlessly they might succeed. It can't just be a straight up extraction shooter. Hell, the concept of losing all your loot is still massively unappealing to average people. I'm not sure how they can penalize death in the game but getting mopped by a veteran sniper player isn't what some people consider fun. Plus, I understand the original games were mostly all gameplay, lore second. But Bungie has gotten so stale at storytelling that I'm not sure if I'm happy Marathon won't have a campaign or if I'm disappointed they're cashing in on a beloved IP just to blow up in the gaming market. Baldur's Gate 3 is probably GOTY 2023 and is a fucking single player RPG. Clearly the gaming market isn't entirely online multiplayer so I'm at least hoping they do the original games justice.

The fact that "extraction shooters" is now a genre in gaming industry is such a big flex for BSG. Really the extraction part is because of the engine is not possible to load all asset in modern pc setup, so they have to split the world in to small chuck that people love as tarkov. Tarkov is not get enough credit for being tarkov and make a new niece for borring shooting game out there. We love tarkov because it's successfuly balancing between realistic simulator and fun of shooting with great atmospheric environment. Making another extraction shooters to become tarkov killer is so boring. People love tarkov because it's tarkov.

naw extraction shooters are big. problem is tarkov just has the worst gunplay in existence but it has the best looting aspect. so no one wants to play a game where you just loot and die because of rng gunplay. pre inertia tarkov was by far the best the genre could produce the problem was the fact the community wanted to make the game purely off of realism and it instead made it extremely unrealistic and just made the game overly complex. did inertia really get removed? not really they just made you walk in circles instead of pressing a and d making it just stupidly complicated for new players because veterans of the game suck and they rely on putting strain on new players so they can get easy kills.

I couldn't play it because I don't have an xbox sadly, but Vigor is probably top 5-6 extraction shooter

@@BabyNades to be fair bro it really is a great game. Maybe sometime you'll have a chance to run a few missions in it. It really has a lot of action.

Tarkov formula just works. I have tried all other extraction shooters and majority of BR's. Tarkov is the only one I always come back to. Almost every wipe. And it feels more and more rewarding every wipe.

Baby Nades pls. stop, you are really bad at what you are trying to do concerning genres in a shooter. You cant really compare it to an PvE mmo, or PvE Destiny 2 which is all time low like Battlefield 2042, EA of late, almost dieing while I type this on steam.
Why are players bored to death by poor AI in Destiny 2 or mainly a PvE shooter? You dont get the challenge of another player skill level, or others hate to admit it like u.. Because they cant compete vs other players so Baby Nades you better play Destiny 2 before it is a dead game. 49k active players by Bungie on steam and you to spend 500$ for content!
By the way Fortnite have millions of active players in chapter 5 launch day, and more popular than CS to this date with a simple BR mode. So the opposite you mention the extraction shooter can be the new hype that will give anyone a good challenge, to survive a session successfully and extract out. DayZ is more active than Bungie at the moment, and you cant really compare the two companies by size.

wait so they call tarkov realistic and they say its an mmo?. thats the funniest joke ive heard so far
EDIT: Yaeger is lying about why they shut down. it wasnt just because of cheaters, it was because of them being incompotent as they broke everything on every major update.

ey yo wtf u comparing, extraction shooters are not for the casual ppl, u comparing numbers of games that are meant for dad gamers that play on a console, eft is like the dark souls of shooters we dont want the genre to go mainstream because its going to ruin it, of course apex has like 60million players even my 7 yo son can play it

Instead of a single gameplay mode maybe make a game that includes a whole selection of multiplayer and single player match types to choose from. They could be called something like, I dunno, "first-person shooter video game." Sounds fantastical but I think it might work.
