Now that's what I call a masterclass. Gobbi is marvelous!

I admire Tito in pretty much everything he did, but this little vignette from Gianni Schicchi made me long to have had such an adorable father!

The commenters here seem not to know that Gobbi was a great actor, and it was his acting at least as much as his singing that made him a great operatic performer.

The students try to interpret, the maestro makes it natural, not artificial - this is not only the experience, tradition, but also a bit of an intuition you are born with.

The fine tenor Gösta Winbergh went on to have a great career but died prematurely of a heart attack aged 58 in 2002. You can hear how good he is; I'm afraid the other singers didn't have the voice - again, as you can hear - and therefore nor did they have a career.

      Wolfgang Lenz had a career.

‘elogio’ not ‘l’odio’, which is a very funny error. I’m surprised Gobbi didn’t correct him.

You cannot change the technique of someone in " one " master class. You can however help them along , but this particular masterclass is one in interpretation by a Master actor and legendary singer.
Singing becomes easier when one follows the musical line and the thought intended towards the movement!
The music already has the emotion on which a singer can direct a movement.
Too many singers are too concerned with pretty sounds and are flapping their arms around that makes no sense.
Thought directed intent before you act and using the breath stream to stear The Voice.
Act upon the words without unnecessary movements, giving a more realistic portrayal.
    Best regards,
    Raymond Modesti

It is very SAD....that INSTEAD OF TEACHING THEM THE RIGHT TECHNIQUE.....They went into ACTING.....
The first guy (sounds TO FAKE) vocally speaking....
I am sure the Great Baritone could have given him....Great VOCAL ADVICES....
Instead of that....he went into teaching ACTING....

You did not notice that this legendary singer was singing silently, interacting, and directing with his pupil all the time, which is a tremendous positive impact to those young singers in singing.

@@grr8048 .....He was a Great Singer....and that is why....he should have helped VOCALLY to this OVER FAKE DARKNESS singer...
There are other master classes videos....of GREAT SINGERS....on which they address VOCAL ISSUES....not coaching an aria
      ...
******* those great singers are almost all GONE....An honest student would have asked to the GREAT SINGER... "How can I improve my sound"....
      HE WASTE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY...

Yes I agree with you yes but acting is just as important; what is a perfect technique with bland interpretation and acting?

    • @piero7322

@@mountainrunnermountainrunn7298 Agree . I have being struggling with technique all the time .Technique is so important . Most of teachers don't teach technique in master classes, because it's impossible to change the whole technique system right away . It costs months , years .

I'm willing to bet that this was a part of a larger workshop, in which they received some additional vocal coach. Maestro was best known for acting, after all.
