"He's not wrong. He's just an asshole."
Congrats, you just summed up Sherlock Holmes completely.
That is interesting because I don't look at Sherlock as an A-hole. He is a very unique character. I look at Sherlock as a more functional and highly intelligent version of rain-man. He is just more brutally honest, especially when it comes to his perceptions, opinions and viewpoints on life and the World!!
@@blacprophet1153that’s all true it’s just who he is but he’s very much still an asshole 😂
In some ways, Watson IS the main character in that he is the one telling the story in the books, and through his blog, in the series as well. We understand a great deal about Sherlock based on Watson's reactions and interactions with Sherlock.
“He’s not wrong. He’s just an ***hole” 😂 you just got Sherlock summed up there
One of many things they did very well on this show was taking elements from the books and finding a way to modernise them. One example is the fact that Watson has been told to write blog: in the original stories, Watson published their adventures as books.
Can't wait until you guys get to the next episode. Best of season 1 easily.
Holding out for Watson's wedding. That episode had me creased up.
"Girl, let me tell you!" 🤣🤣🤣
BTW, the actress playing the PA is Olivia Poulet. She and Benedict Cumberbatch were together for a number of years.
We do have IKEA in the UK guys!
As he said, it's a Swedish company so obviously America does but we probably don't lol
@@jpw6893 Come on, we've only just got the World Wide Web... oh, hang... we invented that.
We do and it's pronounce ICK-EEYA 😊
Ours shut down in Coventry?
I love this channel, so happy to see you both reacting to this show! It had a special place in my heart as a teenager. If you two finish this series and find yourselves wanting for more on your own time, there’s another modern Sherlock adaptation you can listen to wherever you get your podcasts! It’s called Sherlock & Co, and it is a very fun action-comedy-true crime podcast that takes the original stories of ACD and adapts them with fun modern takes. The relationship dynamic between John, Sherlock and “Mrs. Hudson” is top notch and it’s honestly the most fun I’ve had with a fiction podcast in ages.
@@mikemichaels1 maybe try out Cabin Pressure, that is truly hilarious
Oh yep yep I love and absolutely recommend Sherlock&co!!!!
Using original characters from the books was an obvious thing to do for these two fan writers of Sherlock (basically they claimed writing their own fanfic with this show) but when they wanted to show in the first episode how social awkward Sherlock is, they created the pathologist Molly Hooper. Louise Brealey did such an awesome job, they decided to write her more in this show. She's the only non-original recuring character, all because of how she played her.
Then again, this show is lucky to have such an amazing cast anyway. Well, we were lucky.
And Rekkai never fails to show of his skills, he's a fast thinker.
Much appreciated!
Love that my one of my favourite reactors are doing another one of favourite shows.
The look of joy on Rakai's (sorry if spelling is incorrect) face through this brings joy to mine.
Thank you!
it is a swedish company, but we do have ikea here. inclusive of meatballs. lol
I agree with Rekkai about how much work must go into adapting the stories.
Also remember that Steven Moffat was the lead writer and show runner/producer of Doctor at the same time as these were made.
In a way I like that there are a small number of episodes as it made them more of an event when they aired.
Very much enjoying your takes on some of my favourite shows.
Moffat is the master of 'quirky'. If I see something he's written, then that deffos goes on the watch list.
@@davebox588 he’s definitely my favourite writer/showrunner in the modern series.
Great reaction/analysis of this episode gentlemen! I watched this series a feww years ago and in my opinion it just gets better as the adventure and cases increases that Sherlock and Watson has to solve!
I think part of the three-episode seasons reasoning is that Moffat is also showrunning for _Doctor Who_ at the same time. @nupefromdaville, @Syntell, something you might find interesting. Matt Smith auditioned for John in this, but Moffat and Gatiss thought he was more like Sherlock (and you know what happened next).
And also each one is as long as a movie.
Gemma Chan has spoken about this episode's being "racially tone-deaf" and said that she would "speak up more now if [she] felt that a role was leaning into an orientalist trope of some sort." Actress/writer Anna Chen also dedicated a blog post to it.
This episode is loosely based on the Sherlock Holmes story, "The Dancing Men" from the original Doyle Canon. The character of Soo Lin Yao is based (somewhat) on that story's Elsie Cubitt. Some of the code solving is also taken from _The Valley of Fear._
We have also seen Gemma Chan in the _Doctor Who_ episode, "The Waters of Mars."
Sounds like somebody who is looking for problems to be offended about. Not surprising in current day honestly.
@@Fyrecide If there actually aren't any problems, you won't find any no matter how hard you look. This is a fun episode, but that doesn't mean there can't be issues too.
Loving it! What a series can’t wait for it all 👍
Worth thinking about- the episodes are movie length, and require cinematic camera work, masterful writing, stunts, stunt actors, location shoots, and a huge investment of time- even if the writing was done in advance. The actors are industry pros or breaking out stars.
The three-episode seasonal format is likely due to money as well as the arc of the Sherlock stories they decided to tell.
In general, a series/season is shorter in the UK than in the US. With most of them being around six or eight episodes long but it also isn’t that unusual to have dramas that are just two to four episodes long and often only an hour long episode, so three episodes at an hour and a half really doesn’t feel unusual…and it would be an hour and a half time slot per episode as with it being on the BBC, there are no commercial breaks on any BBC channels.
Oh and a wee spoiler free titbit for a few future episodes, the actors who play Sherlock and Mycroft’s parents are Benedict Cumberbatch’s real life parents.
This was my introduction to Gemma Chan. Nice to have a talented bit of eye candy in the episode lol.
It's interesting you've gone to first name for Sherlock, but last name for John, despite the series using first names for both (mostly -- Mycroft does say "Dr. Watson" and some people meeting Sherlock say "Mr. Holmes"). This is pretty common for viewers, and that's interesting.
So true, 10 years ago, my daughter adopted cats and she named them Sherlock and Watson, just cause it sounded right, she said.
I think it comes down to the ‘commonality’ (is that a word?) of the names. Sherlock is very unusual, Holmes less so. The opposite is true for John (very common), where Watson is less so. People tend to use whichever name is less common to refer to them by. You can see the same sort of thing with the current US Presidential race - people tend to use ‘Kamala’ to refer to VP Harris, but ‘Walz’ to refer to her running mate. Some argue that it’s misogyny, which could be part of it, but it’s also about the commonality of the names.
As a 70s kid, it has always been Sherlock and Watson. That is how any fan of the original stories or any movie have referred to them. As previously mentioned, probably due to how common a name is.
We had a dog named Sherlock. When he was a few years old, a stray cat turned up to play with the dog. When it kept returning 2-3 times a week, we named it Watson. Watson showed up every few days to hang out with Sherlock for several years. Until Sherlock died and we never saw Watson again.
In England we do in fact have IKEA. We also have ALDI and LYDL which are all Swedish businesses I think.
Also quick thought, did Rakai (sorry for the potential spelling mistake) come into this thinking he was watching doctor who with the Amelia Pond reference? 😂
@@Renzlr_7 Aldi and Lidl are German
You guys seem hella chill 😊keep it up 👍🏼
3:49 of course, multiple ones! IKEA is Swedish but found pretty much everywhere in the world.
Sherlock’s takedown of the detective’s idea that the first death could be self-unaliving has been debated back and forth so much. His whole argument hinges on the fact that the guy was left-handed but the gun was in his right hand, which he thinks is impossible. But left-handed people do stuff with their right hands all the time. Even Watson in the previous episode, who has been shown to be left-handed, shot the taxi driver with the gun in his right hand. But then others argue that Watson only did that because his left arm/shoulder was injured during the war and he was probably trained to do military things with his right hand anyway due to the way the guns are manufactured. It’s really debatable. I do still think it is possible for a left-handed person to unalive themself with their right hand, though.
It's the same thing with the scratches on the phone from the charging cable. There are a number of very plausible explanations that wouldn't mean that the user was drinking too much. It's kind of ok, though: the show establishes that Sherlock is incredibly arrogant and self assured, while also allowing that he's wrong with slight regularity.
I miss who on Mondays Wednesdays and fridays 😂 we only get twice a week now
We did change it up to twice a week but the entire season is out and uncut on the Patreon.
@@Syntell fair enough yall make after work chilled 👌 lol now need to occupy myself til then keep up the great reactions recently joined ur patreon
You mention Watson feeling more human, that’s not an accident. Martin Freeman- the actor who plays Watson, has had an incredible career playing the grounding/human element among the fantastical/exaggerated characters. He was the Jim analog in the UK Office, Bilbo Baggins with the dwarves, the sex scene body double in Love Actually, the list goes on. It’s his thing.
@@elliedo01 Arthur Dent, the human in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
The regular suit among the superhero suits.
Mr. Martin Freeman has a new series out right now that is very good called "The Responder"! I'm currently watching the 1st and will start on the 2nd season on his show!
A Scandal in Belgravia… you guys should watch that one it’s my favorite episode and it’s actually so so so good
The reason that European episodes are so much longer is that we don't have nearly as many advertising breaks. After every break, a few seconds of the show have to be repeated to catch the audience back up. In Europe, all this and other breaks add up to 15 minutes max., so to fill one hour, shows are often around 45 minutes long.
Watson’s wife is named Mary. At least on the show
And in the books as well.
Just discovered y'all with Sherlock & the Whoverse.... you're wonderful! Love the commentaries after each episode. If you're looking for suggestions, I'd love to hear your takes on Lucifer & Firefly. Keep up the fun & stay safe
Fun fact: the IKEA catalog is one of the most read "books" in the world, translated into almost 30 languages. I mean, there's 3 IKEA's in Kuwait, my man.
Last video I recommended the BBC drama Humans for you guys to watch. Coincidentally, Gemma Chan is one of the leads in that series.
When are we getting the penguin 😅
I honestly believe that Sherlock was the last great TV show the BBC ever made, more so the first 3 episodes.
Mark Gattis Mycroft is in League Of Gentleman a way out British TV comedy programme i think it will tickle your tickle BBC1 as well
They only do 3 a season because they're so long and complex. It's like making 3 feature films every time they get back together
Think of it as 3 movie seasons .. made to be events
Why would they not have IKEA in Britain just because it's Swedish? They have it in America, Canada, Switzerland, France, Korea, China, Japan, Germany, etc. And, yes, also in the UK.
Why would we have Ikea here but not in England because it's a Swedish company, though?
A lot of fans made a big deal of John saying "colleague" when Sherlock referred to him as a fan but I don't think that he was denying that he was a friend. He was stressing the fact that he is Sherlock's colleague and part of the work. Likely he was set off by Sebastian's elitist and dismissive behaviour and wanted to make a point of being a professional in his own right and not just Sherlock's tagalong.
John should have stayed to protect her. He had the gun. She was the vulnerable person.
You might enjoy Hustle - a BBC series about cons. Very much doubt it is worth the full series, but a few episodes might see you right. Also, Spooks was very much worth a watch, secret service shit.
I'm sad no one recognized Sersi from "The Eternals"
only because The Eternals was so blah, it barely registers a blip... I remember the entire cast and Gemma stands out every time
The UK don't "flog a dead horse".
Of course we have Ikea here they were here 1st.
"he's not wrong, he is just an asshole" yes and no, you need to remeber that sherlock is not like everyone, he is a functional sociophat as he said, sociophats have empathy but not as the rest of the people, so he the majority of times he doesn't know that he is bieng an asshole when he is being brutal honest with someone, his brain works different.
If IKEA is a Swedish company, which it is, and even you have branches of it in the US, why should it not be a thing in the UK as well then? 🤔🤔🤔
By the way, "IKEA" is pronounced "ee-kay-ah". 😉
WE HAVE IKEA
You expect Sherlock to know the Bro Code?? Have you not been paying attention?
👍
I don't think Molly ever had an interest in John. When did that happen?
I think they were mixing her up with Sarah (his date in this episode).
This is my second least favourite episode of the show.
1x3 - 4x0 (christmas special) is one of the most insane runs I've seen on TV, especially for feature length content.
who doesnt like dan brown xD
I would honestly say this is the worst episode of the series. Still great, but probably the least interesting plot-wise. I'd also say S1 is the "worst", but it's still amazing. Just saying that if you like this, buckle up for some of the best shit you've seen.
