This is probably Cumberbatch's best role, can't see anyone else as Sherlock. Other actors can do it great, but this portrayal is so memorable, it's crazy. Martin Freeman doing some of his best work in this series as well. They are the reason you watch the show, even at it's low points, they are flawless. The chemistry is insane, these roles should be studied. The ability to convey so much drama and comedy is truly impressive.
Freeman's probably at his peak Watson in season 3, so many moments where he shatters you. Moffat handles levity in this series so much better than he did with Doctor Who.
I know that Moffat and Gatiss were aware that, because season one was a hit, they had to really bring their game this season. They pulled it off, starting with this one.
"When I say run, run!" is a classic Doctor Who quote. You will see/hear classic Doctor Who references throughout the series. Both Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are huge Doctor Who fans.
Waiting for these originally was so hard! I had the "I am Sher Locked" wall paper on my phone for ages. Lol The shots and camera work on this one is so good.
Lol same here, I was so impressed because I felt so stupid. It was right there and so obvious the whole time and I didn't think about it at all until he turned it around.
I love mycrofts whole thing. The younger brother is hip and cool he's the fun genius who solves crimes and does drugs. But his actually smarter older brother is doing sensible boring things like running governments.
I love this episode, mainly for the side interactions we never got that much of before. It's clear that John has created a real family for Sherlock: colleagues and friends over for Christmas, in Mycroft's confidence, knows Sherlock well enough to understand him and challenge him, and the love they both show toward Mrs. Hudson and Molly. I don't see that Sherlock could have built these kinds of emotional bonds on his own, even if he wanted to.
The BEST episode, IMHO. The series does start to decline a bit in season 3, but the first 2 seasons are just peak television. ☺️ It's so much fun watching you guys react! 🥰
While the chemistry between Sherlock and Irene Adler took center stage here, John was still crucial for the various interactions to happen. Ultimately, the entirely Sherlock Holmes narrative is actually about John Watson. After all, he is our point of view character for the stories, being the blogger of this current version and the narrator of all the original stories. We see Sherlock from Watson's POV so even when he is in the background, he is essential to our understanding of Sherlock.
this episode is one of the best things ever made. Lara Pulver owns every scene she's in! The chemistry between her and Benedict C is amazing! I need them as a couple in a series together, it would the stuff of legend.
As a lover of intelligent crime drama This version of Sherlock was brilliant! I was apprehensive to how good it would be! but the actors done the characters justice a fantastic job and storylines brilliant ❤️👌
The new American TV show that just aired their pilot premiere called Matlock decided to steal a tiny bit from this episode of Sherlock. At the very surprisingly twist ending of the Matlock pilot, they put an advertisement with Kathy Bates (who stars as the new Matlock) asking viewers to hashtag "Matlocked". Being a fan of Sherlock myself, I immediately recognized the reference to the "Sherlocked" pass code. I thought it was such a hoot. A mystery show giving a huge nod to another famous mystery show. 🕵♂️👩⚖️🕵♀️🔎📺🔍❤️🔥
I love all these episodes are a play on original Sherlock Holmes stories, though I think a few of these modernised version are a combination of stories. Might be fun for you to watch a few of the original titles, see what they actual Irene Adler was like. I would suggest the Jeremy Brett version 'the adventures of Sherlock Holmes' as they did quite a lot of the stories and not just the few ones everyone knows, see how they compare to the modern versions.
That two year gap on a cliff hanger definitely built the hype to the max. I cancelled my whole life to watch the premiers of each season of this...lol!!!! I was tuned in and turned off for this show. Just wait though. The 2nd season cliff hanger was the WORST!!!! Looking forward to your reaction to The Hounds of Baskerville. The 2nd ep of each season tends to be less drama than 1 and 3, but this is my favorite of the 2nd eps. I actually like season 4. It goes off left field, but it's still really great...and Mrs. Hudson has a scene in it that is absolutely hilarious!!!
@@cornparade6874 Actually when you watch Rekkai's deep dive, talking his back ground and life lessons, this makes me think he's going to relate so much. And many other reactors who were new to this show, seeing it without the waiting inbetween, getting told every time that "whoa that last season" and then they just love ALL seasons, thinking this show and characters grew and ended perfectly and I agree with them. We'll just have to wait and see, right?!
@@cornparade6874 The first time I watched it, I wasn't too impressed, but it's grown on me. Oh I wish you watched the show whilst it was on air... Watsons Blog was an actual blog you could read online, full of comments from the other characters and everything, plus some of those comments even were referenced in the subsequent episodes, made you feel like you were in the tv show. I am so enjoying watching y'all get into this great show. This is my favorite episode, too. That two year wait was brutal, but the wait between season 2 and season 3 was even worse.
Easily my favourite episode of the show & the best of the series in my opinion. It’s just such a brilliant ep of TV, writing, visuals, acting, score, just superb. Remember watching it on the night of New Year’s Day 2012. The hype for its return was so high and it lived up to it.
"Hamish" is a reference to a Dorothy L. Sayers theory that that's what the H in John H. Watson stands for. She based that on Mrs. Watson appearing to refer to her husband as "James" in "The Man with the Twisted Lip." Hamish is a Scots version of James, and it's suggested that James is a nickname she used for her husband.
with what you were saying about Moffatt's style of writing, there is a phrase that is used about him of "one handed writing", because he's writing typing with one hand, and doing something else with the other one ....
Moffat has a long-time marriage to Sue Vertue, who recommended to him that he and Gatiss stop talking about how to do a modern Sherlock Holmes and just do it, and who is the producer of this show. Moffat also named the characters of Steve and Susan on the britcom, _Coupling,_ after himself and his wife.
