- There are plenty of TV deaths that no one sees coming -- even the actors -- but sometimes the writers are forced to write a character off the show. If an actor is leaving the show, the writers might just write them off in a way that allows for a return. But if they’re a bit angry at the actor for leaving, they might give them a less-than-dignified death.
From the Grey’s Anatomy actor who quit the show when his role got reduced to the Cheers actor who was unmercifully offed for insulting a co-star’s appearance, let’s take a look at why these TV characters were really killed off.

They could have done the script where Sweets was shot right up to the death of the character. Instead, he could have gone into a coma, freeing up the actor to go do the directing gig. Then his return would have provided several episodes of angst value as Sweets struggled with his recovery. One of the biggest wastes of a character-building opportunity ever.
Damn that would have rocked. Especially if they brought him back after Bones and Booth were married or in time for the wedding.
They could've also not wasted the plot about him going on a leave of absence in an earlier season, where Booth kept seeking him out and bringing him back. That would've made sense too...
Yeah that would have been way better. I stopped watching when I found out he died. I think the show needed to end the season before that.
The writers were done... in my opinion. I dont get why his absence was that hard to write into the show unless they were just struggling to begin with

Exactly! Matthew Gray Gubler (Reid) from Criminal Minds has a break from shooting every few months to work on his other projects and they always find a way for his absence to fit in the plot. And even when hotchner left they just made him go into witness protection instead of killing him off. They took the lazy way out and were probably mad that he wanted a break as well.
I'll never forgive anyone for killing off Sweets! Don't care how logical the reason.
When they killed Sweets, the show was never the same.
Especially when they gave Daisy a bigger role... I couldn't stand that character!

Lance Sweets was my favorite character on Bones, I can't believe they killed him off for that reason. What a waste.
Sweets was beaten to death. He was such a great character.
I will forever be haunted by Sweets’s death. “I fought back. You’d be proud.” As for the reasoning, I think it’s BS. Lance and Daisy were about to become parents and he could’ve taken time off to spend time with his new family.

In season 1 Brennan and her team somehow did the work an ME does just like that and when Cam joined in Season 2 a pathologist was needed :)
Also, it didn't help that they tried to replace him with a guy who was basically exactly the same except he was always eating.

All of the chemistry left the show when Dr. Sweets died. The writing even changed. There’s more going on with that.

I watched Bones and the guy who played Sweets could have just been put under a witness protection plan and hide, it's a detective show it could have worked instead of killing him off.

The reasoning for killing off Sweets instead of accommodating a leave of absence was weak and demonstrates a total lack of imagination. Losing George also ticked me off.
I was so pissed at the show for killing off Sweets. I legit couldn’t watch it afterwards. He was like a second son to Bones, it just made it totally morbid. Didn’t enhance the story. How hard is it for the writers, to let him have a change of heart and wanting to explore the world instead of being killed. Lmao
Mr. Nigel Murray was the character shot to death on Bones. Sweets was killed in a physical assault.

1) A opportunity to advance his career opened up that would take him out of town for a couple months, keeps in touch via letters and email
2) On vacation keeps in touch via letters and email
3) framed for murder, keeps in touch via letters, Jeffersonian has a subplot around proving his innocence because we can't have another Zach on our hands
4) Needed a break and sought a temporary leave to work on simpler cases. Kept in touch via letters and email
5) Assignment transfer, new psychologist makes everyone appreciate Sweets more when he returns. Kept touch via letters and email
Granted, these are not necessarily the best ideas, but it's better than just killing him.
Family leave, since apparently he and Daisy were about to become parents. Writers just want to create a bang. They don't think about the emotional impact they are going to cause and how it may actually cost the loss of viewers.
Kutner's suicide on House was so unexpected...that one was very shocking for me because I didn't know that he was leaving the show.
The one that saddened me the most was Sweets.
I remember when it was announced on the news that he got a job at the white house, thinking if he was going to finish the season. Then his character ended up committing suicide like 2 episodes after that. I thought he was going to quit the hospital or something like that.

Been sent to an assignment (hostage situation or something that requires his expertise), i agree, the options are plenty. Would be interesting to know why they opted to go the way they did

Or gone on honey moon with his wife and taken maternity leave to help his wife deliver, and with her health the first few months post partum due to health complications? Something extremely common and basic and federally allows him to keep his job and take unpaid leave for, that Bone' s could rational out in one of her rants.
Then if the actor got better opportunities they'd be screwed. How dare the writers consider people's lives over viewers opinions 🙈🙈👏🏼👏🏼

when Bones killed off Sweets my husband and I quit watching . He was our favorite and there was no reason to kick him off the show. The star said that when the episode was filmed there were NO good-byes, good luck, we're gonna miss you or anything else from the cast. They cut the lights and he was the last to leave...they all just booked, like he had been nothing in the show. What pricks.
That's complete and utter bullshit. His very last scene was in the bodybag and it was the last scene of the day (late night shoot), so the day *before* they had brought out cake and gave him a proper goodbye. They also had a goodbye dinner for him. Where do you get this shit from?
Mr. Eko did hate filming in Hawaii, however, his parents passed away while filming and he wanted to go
home to deal with it.

He had no drivers license there at the time and had a few run ins with police because of it. So maybe not being able to have as much of a life there was difficult? Maybe he felt trapped on an island himself lmao
I had heard he had wanted more money and they weren’t willing to give him the amount he wanted. I’m glad it was actually I don’t like Hawaii.
@@positiveecho326 One thing I heard was that his family was back in the states and he didnt want to make the move to Hawaii. Cost, etc. He would fly back and forth as much as he could and it got too be too much of a burden for him so he asked to be killed off the show

Henry Blakes death on M*A*S*H, one of the most shocking TV deaths of the time. The actors didn't even know about it untill the reveal was being filmed so the shock on their faces is real.

Doherty didn't quit Charmed, she was fired because her and Alyssa Milano were fighting off screen and Milano allegedly went to the producers issuing an ultimatum: It's either her or Doherty.

Dr. Sweets was my favourite Role on Bones. After his Death it went down on the series.
Patrick Hein well at that point it was in the final season. Honestly it went down hill after Bones got pregnant in real life and they had her pregnant on the show with that weird storyline where she was in hiding.
I HATED that they killed Sweets. If they absolutely had to write him out, they could have kept him alive. Then the door would have been opened. Then they killed the English intern (Nigel? it's been awhile) in the most unbelievable way possible.

I stopped watching bones after they killed him off. I watched maybe 8 episodes when they were wrapping up the series to see how they ended it but it's been years later and I'm still unaware of what happened between

One of my favourites was the death of Kendrix from Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. Not only did the death of a Ranger show that Power Rangers was maturing alongside its audience, but Kendrix was written out of the show because the actress was fighting cancer. The good part is though, that the actress remained in the credits for the show, which allowed the producers to pay for her treatment. The character made a return in the season finale.

To me, the death of Larry Hagman showed us some of the best scenes EVER from Linda Gray (aka Sue Ellen Ewing). I still watch some of these scenes, and sometimes I even cry. Not only was this character was in mourning, so was this actress. Priceless scenes.

Sweets wasn't shot, he was stabbed. He did shoot his attacker though.
Beth Rivas I believe they confused him with Mr. Nigel Murray (the downer intern, might have misremembered his name), who was shot by Booth's sniper instructor towards the end of his storyline.
He wasn't stabbed either. Was blunt force trauma from being attacked by a special forces operative which caused severe internal injuries and he bled out.
Nicholas Farrell Vincent wasn’t the downer. that was Fisher. Vincent was a sweetheart who knew obscure facts about everything and shared them constantly.

That episode was genuinely shocking. I remember entertainment news outlets wouldn't stop talking about it for weeks. Not just the twist, but how successfully the show had managed to keep it secret.

I'm happy about that part in some of those istances that the killing off of a character didn't cause frictions between cast and producers/directors but was done trying to do the best for the show.
I remember about that thing in South Park when Isaac Hayes left the show because was irritated by the Scientology jokes, and the creators killed off Chef in the most gruesome way they possibly imagine.
In the opposite way, in the Simpsons they totally kill off characters in respect of the death of their respective voice actors instead of just recasting them, and I think is really awesome.
Charisma Carpenter's character Cordelia Chase in "Angel" was put into a coma, essentially as punishment for Charisma getting pregnant. They brought her back to kill her for the 100th episode.

The bones one was stupid. There are tons of stuff that they could have written. I was obsessed with that show and trust me when I say it was easy to do.
The actor that played eko both his parents had died and the stress of that played into leaving the show.
If the writers couldn't think of a way to explain the therapist's absence in Bones without killing him, they should be fired... They could have worked in something like a vacation, or a case bothered him so he needed some time away from work (like they did once before), he eloped with daisy and wanted to "travel the world in 80 days", etc, whatever.. Them killing him off was a middle finger from the producer because he was trying to be more than just the shrink on Bones.. This fact just made me dislike the show a little.

Yes, but was there any controversy about WHY Henry Blake's character (in MASH) was killed off? Did the actor have any disputes with the writers, producers, co-stars? Those kind of things are more or less what this video was about.
@@not-so-smartaleck8987 Yes, and yes. It fits. The actor from MASH clashed with the producers, made unreasonable contractual demands and was just generally a pain in the butt from what I read. I recall something about the fact that they killed him (offscreen - ultimate actor slap) instead of just letting him go home so the actor couldn't come back.
I cried when sweets died they could have easily made up a reason why he needed to leave. Like a exclusive case that he was needed on for a couple of months or something!!!! He was my favourite character in bones

I'm surprised you didn't mention Robia LaMorte from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She played Jenny Calendar in the first 2 seasons, but left the show because she became Christian and decided she didn't feel comfortable playing a "Techno-Pagan" or appearing in a show with supernatural themes. She was basically "fridged" in order to give Giles' character some emotional heft.
I really liked her. Kudos to her for doing what she felt was right.
I would place Alyssa Milano (phoebe) demanding that Shannen Doherty (Prue halliwell) be written off because in my opinion, Prue was the better character in Charmed.

@@JoshDisher Isaiah Washington had already been fired a couple of seasons earlier for that. TR left because Shonda (for whatever reason) was giving him less and less screen time and he didn't like where that was going.

Prue's death in Charmed really did make no sense thanks to the premise of the show. Mom, grandmom, just about everybody else in their life who had died popped in to say hi every other week. but their beloved sister, a massively powerful witch, nope, never seen again and barely mentioned.
