My Macs last more than 10 years...and they were not maxed out. I hope to see you STILL using your Rolls-Royce of a laptop in 2034! I truly believe that will be possible. Aloha!
If all you do is FB and youtube it lasts forever. Literally. If you use any PRO application, in about 6 years it will start to fall behind. Missing features etc.
nope new macbooks won't be usable in 10 years because of, well, physics. Apple decided to cheap out on a 5 cents bios chip so your bios is on the only part of the notebook that WILL die in the next 7 years according to apple 5 years according to everyone else if you buy the 8 gigs and sub 1tb model. Ah and those machines are not repairable because apple decided that only some specific nand chips are compatible and in 5 years you have to find chips + some professional with soldering experience to save you 1.5k laptop.
@@xBinyWolf I'm sorry to hear this. In truth, I've never owned an Apple laptop. My Apple experience is coloured with 2006, 2011, and 2021 Mac Minis. Even my old G4 towers lasted a long time. My junky, old Dell WIndows/Linux laptop lasted 11 years, too, but I broke it when replaced the CR2032 coin battery in it. It ran Linux just fine as do all my present Apples. I've assumed that Apple laptops would last at least as long as my old rubbish has... I'm even writing this on and old $99 LInux laptop. Mahalo for being the bearer of bad news about Apple laptops.
If you live on the road and do a lot of video encoding and it's your only machine, your configuration actually makes sense. Most of us don't live like that LOL! I still use a 2017 MacBook Pro for office productivity and it runs great. I also use a Surface Pro 9 for accessing my work VM. It's all good. We do what makes sense for us individually.
im using the M3 max with 36G ram and 1T ssd and i gotta say this is REALLY GOOD. Also after working 13 years on windows ( Ui/Ux Designer and Video Editor) this laptop did manage to run much faster than my pc. Supper happy with it and battery is amazing
Im considering it but man building the same machine and just running Linux is so much cheaper and upgradable. I just want the apple silicon but you get so hosed for memory and storage. I hate the soldered in non-upgradable ssd too. My primary issue on my maxed out 2018 MacBook Pro is heat, the kernel comes in and throttles my cpu often, especially if charging while under considerable load. I know the m3 max is significantly more efficient
I just order a M3 Max a stepped down from the max out model. I mostly do post processing photo editing and going to delve in video soon. Going to be in Asia on assignment and only taking this unit. Yes, it was painful but worth it.
8 thousand dollar laptop sounds extreme. If you can hang on to it for at least 5 years w/o a replacement then , it's worth it. You may be able to write it off as a work expense. If you are simply following trends, this seems like a ridiculous purchase.
Mine is M3Max 16 40 48 gb ram 1TB. I use external thunderbolt enclosures with NVMEs and they work great. I mount them behind the screen with Velcro. I use it for video editing, 3d , Ai and other heavy cpu gpu apps. Death stranding is great but not as good as my desktop pc of course. It’s a great laptop
Yep, I agree. Good external SSDs do a fine job, I just chose the storage for comfort and ease of use this time. Gaming is nowhere near as good as on PC but it’s like I said, just having the option to play a few good titles on my work machine when I’m traveling is a nice little bonus.
@@PatrickRambles there are some games that run extremely well natively on my m3max. For example i like Vintage Story (website doesn’t state yet that mac is now natively supported) it runs with well over 120 fps on max setting (i have capped it at 120fps as the screen is 120hz)
Good lord, and that's just the 14" model. I bought the MacBook Pro laptop (16-inch) - Apple M3 Max chip, 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 48GB memory, 1TB SSD and it was a cool 4k dollars. Yikes. I'm a motion designer and video editor for a living, so I hope it's worth it.
I still don't get it why Apple doesn't use PBT keycaps for their keyboards on such expensive machines. It'll solve the grease and slippery problem instantly.
It is probably due to the manufacturing difficulties with PBT. If you look at how thick custom PBT keycaps are, compared to the super thin keycaps on a MacBook. If it was that easy, they would have probably done it. But what do I know 🤷
From what I’ve read, the 14” max overheats if you push it hard enough. You’re not pushing it that hard, which suggests you’d be absolutely fine with the M3 pro, saving a chunk of cash. There’s obviously kudos in having the biggest/badest model, but I wouldn’t pay 3k over the odds just for that. You can only say if it was worth it with any confidence if you try a lower spec and there are real world differences.
@@PatrickRambles simply that it doesn’t overheat, and you don’t hear the fans too much. If you max out the cpus and gpus I understand the 14” gets hot and noisy. So on that basis, I’m assuming yours is not maxed out, and I’m guessing you might get away with a lesser spec. My point is you can’t really tell if it’s worth it if you don’t know how cheaper models would perform for your use case. You can say you’re happy with your choice, and if you are, then great!
open budget from my employer so I went with a M3 max pro 64gb ram! lol.....all I do is watch netflix and youtube. blistering fast when offloading pics from my gopro and canon m50. Its an absurd amount of machine for me but its fun to have the top top of the line-if only for a moment.
I have $4k to spend on a 16inch macbook pro max m3 48GB & 1T SSD. My sole purpose for wanting to buy it is online biz and video editing. And ofc the sweet apple design, should I go for it?
It's indeed very good to actually pay attention to one's needs, but many people don't have the patience to observe their workload over a week or so to see the peak memory/CPU usage.
The M3 Pro is a great machine. I think it’s more than enough for most users. I’m sure my work doesn’t fully push the M3 Max to its limits either , it’s just nice to have the headroom so there aren’t ever any slowdowns or hickups (for now 😅)
Hi Patrick, great honest review! I upgraded from an intel 2019 15 inch MacBook Pro to the new 16 inch M3 Pro MacBook Pro, and it is such a tremendous upgrade for me. I didn't max it out. My M3 Pro has 512GB SSD and 36GB unified RAM. I use 1 2TB external SSD for Final Cut Pro video editing, and a 2nd 2TB external SSD for my Photos library and editing projects. The Space black color is nice too.
Thank you, same with yours too! These M3 machines are amazing! I am in college, so I ended up getting an M2 15 inch MacBook Air, and that also is a great upgrade!@@PatrickRambles
I got 16” MacBook Pro with m3 max and 36GB memory, I am an AI engineer just about to start grad school in computer vision I am hoping it has the capability to run big models and render heavy visuals
I have an 16" M1 Max 64GB with 1TB ssd. I use it for literally everything, including work (VFX compositing) and entertainment (gaming included), both traveling and clamshell mode with 2 external monitors. Since the M3 Max has been out I'm trying to rationalize why should I buy one, but I just can't find any reason. I could afford it, but to be honest I'm not even using the full potentials of the M1 Max so far, so all the extra power that M3 Max would provide would be probably wasted. So maybe the M5 or M6 ...
Thanks for sharing about your own experience with this computer as a PROFESSIONAL. I let depreciation work for me, wait a bit for the m3 chip to drop in price once the m4 hits (in a few weeks), and wait for 2025 to roll around, which makes older macs another year older, and with further depreciation. Lots of people don't like buying new for good reasons: they see a used computer as "dirty, touched by another person," risky cuz it may have hidden damage, may not have a warranty so a huge risk for thousands of dollars, won't be as fast, powerful, may not have the specs I absolutely want, and dealing with people who are selling used computers is sketchy and could be dangerous. It's just easier to buy straight from Apple.
There is no such thing as future proofing by buying a maxed out computer. If you are a power user, just buy what you need for now and exchange every 2 years. It will be cheaper, and a moderately decked out laptop in 2 years is always better than your maxed out device today.
had the base M3 Max w 36gb and Besbuy price matched Microcenter which has the 48gb model upgrade for $3599 at time of writing, so ended up with that (do a lot of Ultra HS medium format photo editing - while having all my own apps open in the background). Do I see a HUGE difference - no. Do I see a difference day to day - I think so. However, if after any sales, the 36gb option was nice. I DID run into some memory issues with LR Classic (but I don't think this was a fault of the system, just software development needing to work across a broad range of machines, and not being optimized). I upgraded due to the price difference being minimal, figured $200 now over 3-5 years is not the end of the world. Will it actually see a difference? I don't know, and even if so = how much? (software is not only slow to adapt but needs to work for a variety of hardware (aka typically not the latest and greatest as the vast majority of users are NOT using that hardware - think iPhones and iPads = super powerful hardware but apps are still made for 5-7 year old tech specs)
I will note that everything is "snappy-er" on the new machine, the 36gb model I had for 2 weeks so it wasn't old. If you can snap a deal it "might" be worth it? if your workflow can have a slight bump. Otherwise besides a few small "stress" test hiccups the base 36gb model was great.
Have you noticed the battery on the M3 max is not good enough to handle its power? I can spend about 6 hours editing on it until the battery dies and I need to plug it in. Wondering if that's normal considering the battery life is advertised as much longer.
Yeah I'd say that is a pretty good score. Editing is a relatively intensive process. The advertised battery life usually quotes things like video playback time, which is much easier on the system. Compared to a PC, 6 hours of editing on battery is petty great.
@@PatrickRambles I guess 6 hours is enough for most on-the-go scenerios, but as my first laptop, i wasn't expecting that type of battery life. For paying this much, I would like the convenience and elegance of not having to charge in the middle of the day. Even when browsing the internet, 5 tabs open, screen brightness on medium, i still only get about 8 hours max. It just seems so far from the advertised battery life. You would have to have a downloaded video, lowest screen brightness and literally nothing else running in the background to get even close to 20 hours.
for me personally, I've found it almost always worth spending more on tech purchases for better specs then to not...whether I have the money to purchase it all up front, or if I'm putting in on credit/taking out a loan. I can't think of a time I've ever regretted spending more for better specs...but I can think of times where I've regretted not spending more to get better. But...within reason. lol spending $9k to max out this beast is too much for me. I'd never need that amount of ram or hard drive space.
How’s the display size of the 14” for video editing in FCP, is it enough? Because I’m planning to use the laptop mostly without external display and on the go.
Nice review. I think you should’ve waited for the M4 to max out - for the rumored AI capabilities. I recently got myself a brand new 16” M1 Pro 32/1tb after M1 Air 8/256. Works perfectly fine for my marketing workflows with no SSD swap. Should be good at least for a year or 2 before the M4 prices drop.
I had the 15" M2 but after 10 days, I exchanged it for the 14" M3 Pro. Xcode had frozen up twice while during light task with the 15" M2, did a factory reset and issue persist. I exchanged it for the 14" M3 Pro because it was on sale for $1749 at Best Buy. I will admit, I really do miss the 15" screen size but to get a $250 discount on a brand new 14" M3 Pro, I didn't want to miss out on a great deal. So far, same files and same light task on Xcode and no freezes with the 14" M3 Pro.
@@Deoffred the base model version 18GB/512GB. I had the 15" M2 16GB/512GB. just get any M series with 16GB. Again, the only reason why I went with the 14" is because of the amazing deal. Otherwise, I would have replaced my defective 15" for another 15" due to the better screen size.

Choosing 14 inch for a laptop is absolutely the right decision in my opinion. Most people already have other displays if they spend that much money to a laptop. I find it quite weird when I see people travel with anything larger than a 14 inch laptop. I guess, each to his own. Btw, great video as always 👏🏻
Well i chose the 16“. It is useful to have the bigger screen for working when away from home (not flying much) (working at uni of the holiday cabin that only has a small solar panel, 12v system with a small battery) i need to do work for uni and edit photos. So screen size is more a benefit than a slightly more compact size.
8k for a laptop, wow. I just bought myself an 18" gaming laptop, M18 alienware with ryzen 9, 64 GB RAM & 2 TB storage and it is not even a quarter of your price.
Last time I maxed out a MacBook... I regret it forever. I gave it away to my brother, coz all that power! Wasn't enough to deal with the terrible mac os. I installed windows and got better, but damn... When apple killed 32bit I jumped and said nope!. mac might last longer... But Apple's charging a premium for 8gb it's a middle finger.
I got myself a 16“ macbook pro m3 max 16 core cpu, 40 core gpu 64 gb unified memory and 4tb ssd to run complex and large statistical models for my papers at university. Additionally i do a lot of photo editing and some video editing. (It replaces my 2015 maxed out 15“ MacBook pro that was no loner able to run my statistical models and was horribly slow in photo and video editing) it was a big investment for me but im super happy with this machine. It has amazing capabilities. (I was thinking of going to 128gb memory to future proof, but that would have been more than 1000$ in my country for this upgrade so i decided against it.
I have just ordered the same MacBook too. But my choice was between the lower end m3 max chip and the higher end m3 max chip with 64gb. Do you think the price was worth it? I am having cold feet because of the price but I do want it to last another 8 to 10 years like my 2015 MacBook Pro has done.
@@wordswondrouswords6120 well i am super happy with mine. As for if you need it i can’t help you there. How have the battery experience been going with the 14 inch M3 max, I’m also deciding to go for the same size and chip but still wondering about battery life in regular use and does the low power mode extends the battery life by a lot while on the go? Thank you very much for making great and informative video
Battery life is good. I haven’t done any drain tests etc , can only speak from use whilst traveling and I’ve never not made it to the end of the day. Rest of the time it’s hooked up to power. I haven’t used low power mode.
I do have the 16“ m3max 40 core gpu. The battery life is really good. A stark contrast to the previous intel machines. The low power mode cuts down energy draw considerably (much more as in my sisters m1max, and i heared also in the m2 generation low power mode isnt very useful) if you just do daily tasks like mails or righting texts you wont see any downside in performance while in low power mode. All the while the whole system sips less than 20 watts. For anything demanding switch back to automatic/ high power mode else the machine feels slow.
I got same configuration but only 2tb. Totally worth the upgrade even though the M1 Max I have as a back up is pretty close in speed for what I do. I think exporting 4k videos from Final Cut is a little faster but editing 8k 422 files is still laggy without proxies. This laptop makes me a lot of content quickly and effortlessly without breaking down. That is the value of Mac and Apple products for me. When I was using dell for 20 years the damn chips would melt and you would have to way for dell service tech to come to your house to fix it. Then the issue would happen again because of the thermal paste on the cpu not working. I use the 14 with avp and this is amazing. Just looking forward to the time when I can just use avp with m4 chip and an external keyboard. Wish the avp vision os was more like Mac desktop so I can open multiple windows that I can use mouse keyboard on for work. Think this will eventually happen but until then the 14 is making amazing return on investment.
I really want to purchase it like this, fully maxed out, but my budget will only allow me go for 128gb Ram and 1tB of storage, as I work with motion graphics and want to start working on some 3D animation, is the best option, will buy more external hard drives in the future even those are slower than the internal, but is what Incan afford now
Thank you. I am video editor only. Did you use the M2 or just the m1 before you got this. Last week I bought the M2 Max and I liked it so much I decided to return it and get the M3 Max. The M2 has 64GB ram and 2 TB. The M3 Max has 48GB and 1 TB. I have them both here and one is going back. It seems to me the M2 performance is better in adobe Premiere Pro. Can I get you thoughts and advice. Because of my edu. discount and apple card cash back. The M3 Max is costing about the same as the m2 max refurbished.
I came from the M1 Max which was still doing pretty well to be honest. If you can get both for the same price , I’d get the M3 for the resale value alone.
Adobe is always pretty slow to optimize for newer models. Id assume there will be an update in premiere that will make it perform better on m3max than on m2max.
OK that is interesting. Yes I'm feeling good about it now. So much to know. For a short time I had a Legion I9 13980HX with a 4090 RTX and it was under performing I felt. I returned it. Mac blew it away but I had to go though a lot to figure this out. Thanks again Superbus@@Superbus753
The main issue with this justification is, this year, or next, M4 will be out. You can only assume more power and efficiency. Everyone who justifies highest end devices maxed out, will end up buying the next version and making a new video :) . Lets just accept it, only or main reason you bought it, was because you wanted to... not needed to. simple. I accept it myself. M1 is an overkill for me, yet I purchased an M3 Pro - only because I am geek and love them.
I am not expecting a big jump from m3 to m4 as there wont be a new process node available the jump between m2 and m3 was enabled by the switch from 5nm to 3nm node. Additionally i did go for a very high end model as i want to future proof. I had my last MacBook pro for nearly 10 years. Hope to keep my new machine for at least 5 years. 10 would be great but we’ll see.
Thanks for sharing Patrick! The overall price is insane but I guess for you it was worth it. I'm loving my 16 macbook pro 2021 with base configuration best value/price Have you tried using a gamepad I recently did that and I was pretty surprised how good it was. Get well soon by the way :)
Thank you 🙏. I’m all better now , just the voice hasn’t caught up yet :). Yeah you can hook up a controller and it works pretty well for most games! For first person shooters I prefer mouse and keyboard but for most other games a controller is nice so you can sit back and relax whilst playing.
What does non bin (non bend?) mean when it comes to computers? Does that mean how many CPUs it has? Question from a person with little to no knowledge about computers. I tried to google the question but that didn’t work
Another video editor - does not relate to Audio - which its a downgrade. (No disrespect to the TH-cam, this comes up in my list and I would never consider anything for Audio over a M2 Pro unless you are certain to be getting more peformance cores)
That was a great video, my only question is don't you feel scared putting all the eggs in one basket (the 8TB are so good and fast but what if it fails?!)
I never put all my eggs in one basket :). I use a NAS at the studio and everything gets backed up in the cloud. SSDs can fail, no matter how good they are.
I miss the old macs that had upgradable memory and hard drives. With these new computers a nand failure will brick a top end laptop instantly. No popping a new drive in it, more like popping it in the bin.
Yes I know that was the story back when everyone was having a panic attack about the so called overheating. Like I said, I’ve had zero issues with that or thermal throttling. Those issues are quite common on new models and are usually fixed after a firmware update or two.
Can anyone give me insight? I am a music producer and use Logic Pro very heavily. I also produce video content and use Final Cut often. Is a pro max m3 a good choice? Do I need to upgrade all the features such as CPU, GPU, and unified memory (I don't understand what those are).
Hey! MBP Max is definitely a great choice and you don’t need to max it out. Same for video editing. Anything over 16GB unified memory is solid. With that said, the more layers , the more unified memory. My personal rule of thumb , especially if you intend to keep a machine for several years , is to bump the spec as much as your budget allows.

Wow, this was really everything I needed to know. I’m currently on an i9 MacBook Pro 16in and I’m so ready for a M series Mac.
Same here
Im considering it but man building the same machine and just running Linux is so much cheaper and upgradable.
For $8K, that laptop better be supported for at least 10 years.

Yep - kidney selling time.
@@PatrickRambles - ha ha. Trust me when I say no one wants my kidneys or liver. I’ll probably just take a second mortgage in the home. 😂
With respect Paul, what do you know about how hard I push my machine?
There is no 8tb option for the M3 Pro.

Fantastic machine. My only advice would be to try and get 2TB if you can, in light of your video editing. 1TB fills up faster than we like.
It's indeed very good to actually pay attention to one's needs, but many people don't have the patience to observe their workload over a week or so to see the peak memory/CPU usage.
There is nothing I do that would vaguely require that machine, but it would be fun to have just the same. My M3 Pro MBP does the trick for me.
The M3 Pro is a great machine. I think it’s more than enough for most users. I’m sure my work doesn’t fully push the M3 Max to its limits either , it’s just nice to have the headroom so there aren’t ever any slowdowns or hickups (for now 😅)

Apple should offer a leasing option. Use for 2 years and send back and pay effectively what you'd pay if you bought it and sold it after 2 years.
In Europe they do. Sort of , they allow banks to lease the machines out.

Well i chose the 16“. It is useful to have the bigger screen for working when away from home (not flying much) (working at uni of the holiday cabin that only has a small solar panel, 12v system with a small battery) i need to do work for uni and edit photos.

Great video! Do you have also (expensive) AppleCare for it? What about your backing up plans for that 8 TB?
Thanks! Yes I have Apple care. For the backups I use a NAS system with redundancy (which also backs up to the cloud)

Thank You. I will@@PatrickRambles
Apples SSD upgrade costs are indefensible. £400 to upgrade from 256 to 1000GB is just insane.
For me it was a £400 cost to upgrade from 1tb to 2tb.
Did you get AppleCare+?
Thanks for sharing Patrick! The overall price is insane but I guess for you it was worth it. I'm loving my 16 macbook pro 2021 with base configuration best value/price
Have you tried using a gamepad I recently did that and I was pretty surprised how good it was.
I get the frustration regarding the frame of reference. Most TH-camrs are going to be editors, it comes with the territory.
Bro is basically carrying around a used car
I can't edit videos on a used car 🤷♂️
@@PatrickRamblesI’ve seen doom playing on microwave. You never know lol
Good video, thanks!
Thanks Peter 🙏
If you enjoy it’s worth it life’s too short to worry about money
That was a great video, my only question is don't you feel scared putting all the eggs in one basket (the 8TB are so good and fast but what if it fails?!)
I never put all my eggs in one basket :). I use a NAS at the studio and everything gets backed up in the cloud. SSDs can fail, no matter how good they are.
What is the box with the screens below your monitor?
It's a stream deck by Elgato :)
I miss the old macs that had upgradable memory and hard drives. With these new computers a nand failure will brick a top end laptop instantly. No popping a new drive in it, more like popping it in the bin.
Agreed.
I’m so down for spending $8K on a laptop IF it’s worth it. Thank you for making my financial sanity at ease 😂
"Maxing it out" ... doesn't make sense with the 14" chassis.
Yes I know that was the story back when everyone was having a panic attack about the so called overheating. Like I said, I’ve had zero issues with that or thermal throttling. Those issues are quite common on new models and are usually fixed after a firmware update or two.
Nice video and content Patrick a lot of money tho 😎👍
Thanks Mary! Indeed it is 🙈
Can anyone give me insight? I am a music producer and use Logic Pro very heavily. I also produce video content and use Final Cut often. Is a pro max m3 a good choice? Do I need to upgrade all the features such as CPU, GPU, and unified memory (I don't understand what those are).
Hey! MBP Max is definitely a great choice and you don’t need to max it out. Same for video editing. Anything over 16GB unified memory is solid. With that said, the more layers , the more unified memory. My personal rule of thumb , especially if you intend to keep a machine for several years , is to bump the spec as much as your budget allows.
@@PatrickRambles thank you so much for replying! This helps me decide. I will be ordering a pro max soon. Looking forward to playing around with it 👍🏻
I might cop the 14 inch one maxed. I need the ram.
Thanks Louis! I’m a lobbyist (I guess that falls within the influencer category 😂)
0:12 clearly I'm when my dad ask me rest of money 💰
8k on a laptop… damn Apple got yo ass.
I think the sweet spot is maxxed out but 2TB SSD.
I think you just lose more money in the long term by overpaying in the first place.
It's like most things in life.
