    Ibanez days, Triaxis days, Rock Discipline practice, simply 90s JP's Era - Pure gold. I know I'm nostalgic, but this is the JP that inspired to play and practice the guitar.

    To my mind, this is John Petrucci in his prime. Not this particular gig, but that era... Still love him, but I think his star was shining brightest between 1992 and 1999.

      +Julian Scott I think after the year 2000, Petrucci just plays for the fans. like in the 90s you could tell he had an 'adventurous' style and he was open to all sounds. now he is just known for incredibly fast shredding..

      To me, SDOIT album is one of the best, and I even concider the Train of Thought album as a hit. The last song from that album "In the name of God", frickin masterpiece.

      +kigawman I think it's his muscle. He should start toning done and have more like a climber physique than a body builder's. Maybe the old John will resurface. :D

    • @TheMedievalBard
      @TheMedievalBard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +kigawman I politely disagree with you all. I think it's more the nostalgia factor that makes you like the old john petrucci more. His technique is definitely still as good and even better in certain areas. When it comes to DT's songs I do find their older stuff had mor charm and they didn't change their sound over the years. But to say his muscles have decreased his ability to play is just wrong, listen to his 2015 live recording and unless your'e dellusionnal you'll see he's just as good as in 1998.

    Reading the comments... Lot of nostalgia for THIS john petrucci. Unfortunately, i have to agree. In the '90s he was absolutely unique and his riffs, tone, playing... and guitar (!) were so beautiful. Seems to me he's somebody else now. Those were the days. Thanks John for a decade of fantastic music.

  • @DanielVerberne

    One thing I miss about modern Petrucci is the jazzy, almost fusion-esque style to his playing. He's still capable of it, of course, but there's been a definite stylistic shift towards a more metal sound. Again, it's not a matter of something turning off and another thing turning on, merely that he plays (at least in public) less of the almost jazzy stuff he used to sometimes pull out. But all that said and done, Petrucci has nothing to prove to the likes of me. I could pick dozens of incredible pieces of playing and composition from every single year of that man's creative life that are show-stoppers - he's an incredible player and has a fantastic ear (and discipline) for melody. One only has to listen to the dramatic, almost orchestral lines in his outro solo to "Pale Blue Dot", or the solo in "The Best of All Times", or ........... holy shit ........ 1:01:56 ........that amazing improvised variation on the album with that beautiful bend!

    As for him not "fading" like many others have, this is no surprise. He's a consummate musician and from day one, he has always prefaced anything that's instructive with the need and importance of warming up exercises, and he is no doubt, a very disciplined player. I also understand the different opinions about him being better back then than he is now, because of his style or guitar choices. But I don't see it that way, I believe he's just evolving with the times and his age so that his music and playing won't become stagnant. In addition to that, he's still the main song writer, lyricist and producer for the band. Liquid Tension, G3, he's a workhorse for sure. As well, if he was exactly today as he was back then, there would be those saying that he's not "keeping up with the times" or that he's "stuck in the past". Besides, its not ours to question the "creator".

    I have seen many of my favourite 80s-90s guitarists taking a toll over the years...Top on the list would be George Lynch (who occasionally sounds like he can't play anything anymore), Kirk Hammett (who has been degenerating for a few years now)..even the almighty Yngwie started fading and becoming sloppy, his phrasing is out of the window. However, John Petrucci has stayed professional throughout. I know many might love his old "honk" Triaxis sound a bit more, (personally as a Triaxis enthusiast I do as well, but his modern JP2C+ is also a dream rig), but no one can say that John "faded" over the years. His technique is still up there and spot on.... Its just that he couldn't get any better because he was in God mode since the 90s anyway...Another one that doesn't seem to fade at all is Steve Vai.....And MAB.

    Its amazing just watching him keep hitting the pickup toggle every 2 seconds and never miss a beat. Its such a fluid action. Sometimes hes hitting it for no reason (making sure?) or missing the right position other times which is interesting. More a gear problem than anything. I wonder if Petrucci reads comments like “ i miss Petrucci on his Ibanez days“ everybody misses Petrucci from that era, i wonder if he says “ oh man , people don´t like my style of playing an more i should go back to develop that style“

    Even Petrucci in his prime can't play Universal Mind flawlessly.

      +Max Music listening to JP play at this time, I felt he's more acquainted with his alternate picking technique. I can hear the notes clearly compare to the way he play these days. He's not the same as when he was one of those uber guitarists in the late 90's.

      +kigawman I think he's still the king of the Alternate Picking department, but the clarity on the notes during this era was due to him using lower gain than today. Nowadays he got his amp's gain really hot and being pushed by some sort of boost (TOT era) or preamps (Jp13/Majesty). Just watch his demo for Dimarzio's Crunch lab/liquifire with his BC&SL rig for his uber-gained modern tone.

      +JohnnyLayneGTR no, I saw rusty cooley at a clinic yesterday, hes the king of alt. picking, hes so insane. But petrucci has much better phrasing.
